So how's everyone's New Year going? Any plans, resolutions that are /hwg/ related?

I finished the last of the infantry for my almost exclusively Airfix Para army for Battlegroup today and converted a 60mm mortar and a .30cal - I need to do two Jeeps, crew for those and three Shermans, then it's 500 points, ready to war.

It is 54 years since the battle of Ap Bac, the first major victory for the Viet Cong in the Vietnam War. It was fought in Định Tường Province (now part of Tiền Giang Province), South Vietnam.

A week before the battle, US intelligence had detected the presence of a radio and a sizable force of National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam (NLF/Viet Cong) soldiers, reported to number around 120, in a hamlet in Dinh Tuong Province, home of the Army of the Republic of South Vietnam (ARVN) 7th Infantry Division. To destroy the NLF force, the South Vietnamese and their US advisers planned to attack from three directions by using two provincial Civil Guard battalions and elements of the 11th Infantry Regiment, ARVN 7th Infantry Division. The infantry units would be supported by artillery, M113 APCs, and helicopters.

On the morning of January 2, 1963, the South Vietnamese Civil Guards spearheaded the attack by marching toward the NLF hamlet at Ap Tan Thoi from the south. However, when they reached the hamlet of Ap Bac, which is situated southeast of Ap Tan Thoi, they were immediately pinned down by elements of the Viet Cong 261st Battalion. Shortly afterwards, three companies of the 11th Infantry Regiment were committed into battle in northern Ap Tan Thoi, but they too could not overcome the NLF soldiers who had entrenched themselves in the area. Just before midday, further reinforcements were flown in from Tan Hiep. The fifteen US helicopters ferrying the troops were riddled by NLF gunfire and five helicopters were lost as a result.

The ARVN 4th Mechanized Rifle Squadron was then deployed to rescue the South Vietnamese soldiers and US aircrews who were trapped in the southwestern end of Ap Bac, but its commander was highly reluctant about moving heavy M113 APCs across the local terrain. Ultimately, their presence made little difference as the NLF stood their ground and killed more than a dozen South Vietnamese M113 crew members in the process.

Late in the afternoon, the ARVN 8th Airborne Battalion was dropped onto the battlefield and in a scene that characterized much of the day's fighting; the paratroopers were pinned down and could not break the NLF's line of defense. Under the cover of darkness the Viet Cong withdrew from the battlefield.

Shortly afterward, more than 18 hours too late, the South Vietnamese hit Ap Bac with an artillery barrage. The artillery rounds killed another five South Vietnamese soldiers and wounded 14 others.

American advisor John Paul Vann, who had made key decisions during the early phases of the battle, blamed the South Vietnamese for the debacle. "It was a miserable damn performance, just like it always is. These people won't listen. They make the same mistake over and over again in the same way". According to Moyar (2008), in blaming the South Vietnamese, Vann wanted to conceal the Americans' flawed intelligence and poor leadership. He hoped to pressure the South Vietnamese to accept future changes he favored.

South Vietnamese casualties included 83 killed in action and at least 100 wounded. The American participants, who included advisors and aircrews, counted three dead and eight wounded. Of the fifteen American helicopters sent to support the operation, only one escaped undamaged, and five were either downed or destroyed.

For the Viet Cong, the battle marked the first time they decided to stand and fight a large South Vietnamese formation, although outnumbered by more than five to one. Against overwhelming odds, the Viet Cong achieved their first major victory. They successfully stopped the well-equipped South Vietnamese army, supported by a combination of artillery and armored units as well as American airpower. Their casualties were just 18 soldiers killed and 39 wounded, despite the fact that the fighters were hit by more than 600 rounds of artillery, napalm and other ordnance released by 13 warplanes and five UH-1 gunships.

Most wargame simulations of the Vietnam War cover US vs NVA stuff from the later 60's. But Ap Bac provides the chance for an interesting early war ARVN vs VC encounter. The VC player is seriously outnumbered and will have to make full use of their mobility and experience to survive. The ARVN player has to struggle with poor leadership, corruption and court politics while trying to pin down their elusive enemy.

The inaugural patrol of U-33. A Type VIIA U-boot under command of HptLt Steiger Kross. Assigned to patrol off the east coast of the British Isles. Managed to catch the 4700 ton freighter Yuva in the North Sea after clearing Denmark. Trailed her until the night time then surfaced and engaged her with the deck gun. Ship was sunk with only 1 fatality to the 35 man crew.

A couple of days later came across the 5500 ton freighter Kennebec with destroyer escort. In a cat and mouse battle that raged to the early dawn the U-33 fired 5 torpedos, over a period of 4 hours and only managed to achieve 1 hit that slightly damaged the freighter. The destroyer escort managed to drop several depth charges in the vicinity of the U-33 that managed to destroy the deck gun and damage the batteries of the sub before the U-33 managed to slink away.

The rest of the patrol was uneventful and the U-33 pulled back into Kiel on Oct 2nd for refit and stores replenishment.

>Becoming interested in Russian Civil War
Any books or films you guys can suggest?

I'lll provide a RCW section when I get around to doing the Westfront campaign book.

Current campaigns + maps I'm planning to cover:
>Middle-Europe/North Africa
Standard "WW1" theater - from Spain to eastern Russia, from Britain down to Egypt
>East Africa
Schutztruppe and KAR face off in a map of east Africa. Units like Askari and Ruga-Ruga described, as well as specific field guns that were east-Africa only.
>Gallipoli
ANZACs et al. against the ottomans, starting with good old fashioned amphibious landings
>Russian Civil War
Map of Russia from east to west, the 2 sides described in detail, units like tachanka and aerosan described

Any other theaters I've missed or that would make a good campaign? Russo-Polish war could potentially be do-able... probably cut off around 1922

Also if anyone knows some good sources for nice WW1 period maps, please let me know!

There are a couple of good MAAs about the RCW up in our folders. Will you be going full Back of Beyond? That shit gets pretty crazy after a while. You have these incredible events that played out in Siberia and they've been virtually forgotten.

For other WW1 campaigns you could use Palestine, Sinai and Mesopotamia. The first two have more ANZACs as well as a lot of cavalry, and later tanks. The latter is more of an old-fashioned colonial slog.

For maps, you could look at the archives of the Perry-Castañeda collection:

amazing, thanks.

Yep for RCW I'll be doing a complete map of Russia, all the way up to siberia and irkutsk.
Just got done watching the Russian film Admiral (2008), which featured a lot of civil war battles in the frozen northwest, so definitely have to include all those back areas. Would be simple to implement troops running out of ammunition completely and having to charge with bayonets!

SAGA is a nice and quick game. A battle rarely lasts much more than an hour, and you still don't feel cut short. The rules are really as simple as they appear, but the game can be surprisingly intricate thanks to the battle boards.

For Balkan terrain you could do this: http://web.archive.org/web/20080705040111/http://zeitcom.com/majgen/24mtsc.html which would be easy to store.

Another option is to cut cardboard strips, glue them together with hot glue and drape plaster-soaked paper towels over the framework. You can make a giant mountain in under an hour this way. Storage might be a problem but these kinds of hills/mountains are surprisingly durable for what they are. Still pretty delicate though. I suppose you could do it with fiberglass if you wanted indestructible mountains. See attached.

I've been playing it a lot. It is a very good game, the resource mechanic with the SAGA dice and the battle boards keep battles fresh and interesting. A lot of interesting choices to make, depending on how the rolls turn out and the out of turn battleboard abilities make games much more interesting than a traditional IGOUGO-system.

Sofar they have been able to keep a good balance between stats and special rules but I expect rulescreep to pick up soon as expansion come out. One can reasonably say that the later expansion (Ravens Shadow) have much stronger warbands than the core rulebook.

But I have the same problem as you since all of my gamer friends have updated their rules. As long as you're being transparant that you don't know the nuances of the new rules they'll be happy to explain for you what's new and what's not. The new rules and the old are really alike.

read memoirs of tank crews, or perhaps check out some of the osprey tank duels in the OP folders. Tanks in WW1 and WW2 would be very different, I'm assuming you mean WW2? If so, check the OP WW2 folder, then osprey folder and look for some of the duel books.

There's a story from a Tiger crewman here:

The books "Panzer Destroyer", "Troop Leader: A Tank Commander's Story" would be worth checking out.

Rules are pretty simple after a reading. Guess it'll take a couple of games to master it, but it's far better for historicals than KoW. Plus it has the added benefit of Hail Caesar and Black Powder, so theoretically you can use the same ruleset (or at least the same mechanics) for every period.

Fooling around making a Russian Civil War campaign map

What think?

The deployment areas are just the starting positions, after that it gets pretty free form. The production centres produce more forces each turn.
>>
>>51001656
You know, it was kinda more complicated.

Reds wished that Finalnd and Poland were simply part of their deployment zone.

They can easily expand that way, but need incentive to do so like capturing a production centre. I could put a production centre in poland and expand the map a bit that way, although it looks like whites advanced from that side during the early years. I used pic related as a rough guide to where each faction should start, but yeah its a complicated war, and I'm pretty new to it. Definitely good to simplify things for a campaign map, although I could potentially do more accurate starting positions (that aren't boxes). The territory shapes tend to be much more fluid once the campaign starts - the deployment zones are meaningless once the campaign starts - forces immediately move all over the place trying to capture production and annihilate the enemy.
>>
>>51001833
I think you should sneak a peek to boardgames on topic, for example:
-Red Russia
-Triumph of Chaos
-Reds!

Red Russia is simplest, so maybe start there. Just read the instructions and dev notes. The shitshow of RCW is uncapturable without acomodating various minor factions and differences in White Camp.
>>
>>51001888
Nice, those games look amazing, although they're legit campaign games, whereas I'm just aiming to provide a framework for tabletop battles. Really aimed at people who have red and white forces. Other factions could be used (as westfront is somewhat generic in its handling of infantry, cavalry and artillery), but ideally its down to the players and what kind of miniatures they have.

Its pretty much a forces, production and supply lines map, no real diplomacy or politics covered, and ideally kept as simple as possible to allow players to focus on their tabletop games and have each game influence a larger map campaign.
Triumph of Chaos in particular looks great, I would love to buy and learn that game, very in-depth.

The 2nd patrol in November 1939 of the U-33 was a complete snooze fest. sailing up and down the west coast of the british isles. Not even a single fishing trawler was spotted. But it did allow the crew a chance to get home for christmas and a hope of better patrols in 1940....

Slipping out of Keil in a dreary january morning the U-33 headed out for its 3rd patrol, covering pretty much the same area the last patrol had covered. Early in the patrol things started looking up when they came across the 9900 ton tanker Caledonia steaming all by its self. A night approach and several shells from the deck gun and a spread of 3 torpedos broke the tankers back and sent her to the bottom.

a few days later the U-33 managed to come across the carrier Courageous and her escorts heading to Scappa Flow! Its escort force of 4 destroyers forced the U-33 to try a long range approach. Firing off 3 of its electric torpedos to not give away their location only 1 managed to hit the british carrier but failed to do any noticeable damage. The U-33 managed to slip away with little difficulty.

Near the end of the patrol she managed to come across another lone ship- the Royale Sceptre, a 4800 ton freighter. 2 torpedos fired at her, 1 managed to impact her ripping a hole in her hull sinking her in 34 minutes.

The crew was in high spirits when the returned to Keil after this successful patrol!

Sweet, my copy of AK-47 Republic arrived. First edition, because why not. Oh god, I'd forgotten how awful Peter Pig was at printing rules, back in the day. still, it's nowhere near my worst official Peter Pig publication.

Their more recent games are great products and really well done, but some of the older stuff, now OOP, is just... single-sided prints onto coloured paper, for some reason. Yes, great, I appreciate that you put the movement rules on blue or whatever, but it's kind of hard to read. I suspect they're actually (official) photocopies of the master document.

yeah I played Silent War as well and the failure rate of the US torpedos is horrid. think it took me 3 months of the campaign game before I managed to sink anything in that game. >>51004871
>>51005224
Simple dice checks. for attacks-2d6 vs a target number depending on range-add in some modifiers. roll under you hit with a torp. then roll for dud chance-if its not a dud then roll on damage chart.
as far as escaping roll 2d6 again vs a detection chart-add in various modifiers-roll high enough then you are detected and attacked-make another roll adding in various modifiers, that tells you how much damage the sub takes. roll another chart for each point of damage to the sub to see what specific component is damaged. if you got detected you roll again for detection-if detected again, the roll damage and rinse wash repeat until you get away or are destroyed, after the attack then you roll to see if you can repair damaged components or if they are out of action for the rest of the patrol-which can affect you in later encounters depending on whats been destroyed

crew can gain experience over time with various crew positions being upgradable and each position has different effects.

Ive been video recording my patrols and playthrough but i havnt posted any yet. will toss the links up when I get them posted.

So the same anon from yesterday here to ask about Saga. I've been looking for dark/viking ages miniatures and it looks like a lot of the companies that have made them are out of print.

I've found some minis on the following places:
Gripping Beast (of course)
Warlord Games has celts/britons
Wargames Foundry has metal vikings
Saxon Minis for saxons/normans

Looks like the only plastic ones are the gripping beast/warlord ones which I'd prefer for ease of converting. Any other good sources that anyone knows? I've been searching the pastebins but not finding much else.

>Mk 14 dud rate 12/41-7/42: 1-4 on d6
AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH
>>
>>51016502
>AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH

Early in the war, the Mk 14 had a documented failure rate of ~70%, though. 1-4 on a d6 is pretty damn close to that.

Between running 10 feet too deep essentially 100% of the time, AND a faulty magnetic fuse, AND a faulty contact fuse, it's a wonder any hits were scored save by sheer accident. The USN was seeing stuff like 8 torpedoes fired from a stationary boat at a stationary target at a distance of <1000 yards and getting a *single* torpedo to actually detonate on target. Or the poor bastard driving the Tunny who fired seven fish at IJN light carriers at *eight hundred* yards, heard all seven of them explode...and not a scratch to the IJN ship was recorded. *All seven* fish detonated prematurely from faulty magnetic fuses.

If it's maddening for you, imagine how maddening it must have been to be a USN submarine skipper in 1942.

I know that knowledge of the bad USN torps is fairly common knowledge, but even now it boggles the mind as to how bad the problem actually *was*. I've seen people outright deny that the failure rate was that high, and the USN had actually forged those failure reports, because, "no weapon system actually deployed in a shooting war could ever had that sort of failure rate."

In continuing my quest to learn more about pike&shot era warfare I ended up getting the book over yonder <-
This one actually does focus on the battles, so the title isn't a misnomer. And there's a lot of coverage of the strategic movements that lead to the battles, a minimal focus on covering the politics and events and a weirdly enthusiastic writing style. Because it's actually a reprint of a book from 1884.

However that's not actually too bad, partly because of the scarcity of books in English on the subject but also due to the author, whilst not being up to modern standards of research, was definitely trying their best by working from several German books and putting in footnotes about whose accounts seem more logical at points where they differ.
Quite a fun writing style if you can deal with late 1800s English. There is a genuine sense of passion in the covering of events and personalities where the author is commending and lamenting for both sides where appropriate.

Downside is that there are no maps, so having a map of Germany to hand when reading is rather useful because there's a lot of travelling covered.

That'd work, but I have both Caesar boxes, the Ultima Ratio mujahideen, the Orion chechens and Mars mujahideens because a guy was selling three of those boxes along with a whole bunch of modern Germans for like 15 Euros - which would give me around 2-3 squads if not less from metals.

We usually play 1k points with a platoon's worth of infantry, a tank plus some support weapons and other misc shit like armoured cars on each side.

I'd say no to that small scale, minimum squad size is usually 5-men, which would be a complete warband in Killteam IIRC. If you want really small scale WW2, check Nuts! or Five Men in Normandy/Kursk.

Dmitri Loza and Otto Carius have excellent accounts that I would highly recommend. Loza is a Soviet tank commander who used American made Shermans on the Eastern Front and eventually against the Japs in Manchuria.

Otto Carius was a Tiger commander, arguably one of the most successful tank commanders of the war, and his account is mostly on the Eastern front as well.

Hey guys not to shill and most of you probably already know this, but Warlord is having a 50% off sprue sale right now that lasts till this sunday. On top of that, they have free shipping that's roughly at $16.

For those of you that don't know, for the newer kits, you get everything you need on one sprue with between 6-8 guys for $5, meaning you're essentially buying boxes for half off. The boxes that have everything you need in one sprue (aka the new kits) are

>USMC
>US paratroopers
>Japanese Soldiers
>Blitzkrieg (early war) Germans
>German Grenadiers (1944-1945 Germans)
>German Fallschrimjaeger (appear to be late model, but I'm not as familiar with them)

Of course all the other stuff that is on this page is on sale too, I just knew that those WWII sprues are a heck of a deal for the money, and last time I got in on one of these sales they even threw in bases and an instruction sheet. All you would be missing is decals, if the box even comes with any, which I believe only the Germans/Japs do.

You can pick up 24-30 infantry for $20 shipped in high quality plastic. Can't beat that.

French Foreign Legion 1831-1871 (Osprey Men-at-Arms 509)

Concluding his bestselling series on the French Foreign Legion, Martin Windrow explores the formation and development of the Legion during its 'first generation'. Raised in 1831, the Legion's formative years would see it fight continuous and savage campaigns in Algeria, aid the Spanish government in the Carlist War, join the British in the Crimean campaign and fight alongside the Swiss in the bloody battles of Magenta and Solferino. With the ever-changing combat environments they found themselves in, the Legion had to constantly adapt in order to survive. Taking advantage of the latest research, this lavishly illustrated study explores the evolution of the uniforms and kit of the French Foreign Legion, from their early campaigns in Algeria through to their iconic Battle of Camerone in Mexico and their role in the Franco-Prussian war.

Did you guys not like the FoW great war rules? I saw that one video example game they have and it looks kind of underwhelming. One guy always on the attack, the other defending. In Westfront you dont know what your enemy is going to be doing until the game starts, and orders can change halfway through a battle. That way you get counter attacks and changing battle dynamics. Its also pretty nice to have front lines within machine gun range of each other

I just ordered a whole lot of German sprues. Now that I've been stupid and committed money to it, what's a good source for figuring out the German infantry squad/platoon organization?

For example, I can say that a Brit Infantry squad/section was 10-men strong, and had an NCO with an SMG (Thompson or Sten), a Corporal in charge of the Bren gun team, and the other guys in the squad all were basic riflemen. You had 3 sections in a platoon, plus an HQ section which had 6 guys (2 mortarmen, 2 AT guys with a Boyes or a PIAT, a radioman and a medic) plus the LT.

What's the equivalent force org for Krauts?

>What time period?

I'm not actually sure. I was planning on building a "generic" unit which I could use to learn to play Bolt Action with. Everyone else in my group plays Allies (USMC, US Airborne x2, Desert Rats, and Finns) so I wanted to play an Axis power. But I'm going to be honest I'm relatively new to historical gaming and the period German documentation is really hard for me to read through. It's both dense, and keeping track of all the abbreviations (for German words, which are also hard to all remember) is not something I'm especially good at.

I ordered a bunch of these:
https://us-store.warlordgames.com/collections/deals/products/german-infantry-sprue

Plus some accompanying weapon sprues. I guess I'd play a circa early-1944 line infantry force? Something kind of in the middle of the Desert Rat/Finn forces, and the late-war US Airborne forces, so I'm not throwing late-war heavy tanks at my buddy's Crusader and Finnish T-26, and I'm not totally outclassed by the late-war US stuff.
>>
>>51045818
>https://us-store.warlordgames.com/collections/deals/products/german-infantry-sprue
>he got the shitty old sprues

You poor sumbitch, you should've ordered the blitzkrieg or grenadier sprues, they're much better proportioned, easier to build, and come with more options.
>>
>>51045818
>finns
>allies
>>
>>51045858

But I wasn't planning on building an early-war force (Blitz) or doing SS units (Grenadiers).

I can still cancel or change the order for another few hours. Should I get all Grenadier sprues instead?

>>51045766

That's actually really helpful. I'd heard stuff about there being 2 MGs in a squad, and I wasn't sure. It's good to see that I was correct and it's 1 MG, a Sergeant, and a bunch of riflemen.
>>
>>51045991
I really liked the part where the platoon leader uses whistle signals to indicate which section should attack. 2 blows for left section, 3 for right section iirc.

Using a 3 small teams each with their own MG should give you nice flexibility too. Fire n movement, beer n pretzels, yadda yadda
>>
>>51045991
>Should I get all Grenadier sprues instead?

Yes. At the very worse, get a mix. You can mix Grenadier and Heer infantry pretty freely, and doing that will let you field either a Heer infantry unit or a Panzergrenadier unit. If you get all Heer infantry, all you can field is Heer infantry, and if you get all Grenadiers, you can <still> field them as Heer infantry (ie, they've lost their transports) <or> as full-on Panzergrenadiers.

Going all or mostly Grenadier sprues is the more flexible option. Plus, as noted, they're much better models. The Heer infantry sprues are some of Warlords earliest work on the game line, and it shows badly.
>>
>>51045991
Grenadiers aren't SS, Grenadiers are regular Germans with late war equipment (1944-1945) They're idea if youre doing anything from about 1943 onwards. They're the ones with panzershrecks, stg44's (assault rifles) and other more modern weapons and kit
>>
>>51045991

What >>51046090 is saying is yes, if you can cancel the order, then farking cancel it and get Grenadiers ASAP.

Early-war (1939-42): Get Blitzkreig sprues
Mid-to-late war: (very late '42-1945): Get Grenadier Spries
Never: get German Infantry sprues

Also, yes, there are some ~10-man squads which have 2 MGs in them. And also, yes, researching German infantry composition is a goddamned nightmare.

Somebody should - someday - write up a "generic" infantry composition for line infantry platoons, Panzergrenadier platoons, and probably one other type (Pioneers, maybe?). Broken down year by year like this:
Line infantry (1939): xxxxx
Panzergrenadiers (1939): yyyyyyyy
Other infantry type (1939): zzzzzzz
Line infantry (1940): xxxxxxx
Panzergrenadiers (1940): yyyyyyyy

To be fair, he doesn't know much yet, now is our chance to impart the book learnings to him.

Fun fact mr >>51045818 , Finns are actually more of your allies than theirs. Germans actually sold a lot of material to the Finns and *sort of* worked with them, up until the tail end of the war when the Finns signed a peace treaty with the Soviets and had to make the Germans leave. If you look at your Finnish player's equipment, especially if he's playing mid/late war, he'll actually have a lot of German equipment like Panzershrecks and StuG's in his army.

Technically, the Finns weren't allied with anyone throughout the war. They essentially worked with the Germans in the feeling of "hey at least these guys aren't shooting us and enemy of my enemy is my friend" but they were never really part of the axis. A lot of Americans and English were actually very sympathetic to the Finns during the winter war if I remember correctly, and it probably would've been very hard to convince Allied troops to fight them as they never really did anything to piss of the Western Alies.

>A lot of Americans and English were actually very sympathetic to the Finns during the winter war if I remember correctly, and it probably would've been very hard to convince Allied troops to fight them as they never really did anything to piss of the Western Alies.

"Gallant Little Finland" got a lot of positive press during the Winter War. The British were seriously considering sending an expeditionary force to help then.

>[General] Ironside's enthusiasm for "peripheral" operations led him to plans for Allied intervention in Scandinavia; rather than the limited approach of simply mining Norwegian waters to stop Swedish iron-ore shipments to Germany, he argued for landing a strong force in northern Norway and physically occupying the Swedish orefields. If successful, this would allow the resupply of Finland – then fighting the Soviet Union, and aligned loosely with the Allied forces – as well as interdicting Germany's ore supply, and could potentially force Germany to commit troops on a new and geographically unfavourable front. Both Ironside and Churchill supported the plan enthusiastically, but it met with opposition from many other officers, including from Gort – who saw his forces in France being depleted of resources – and from Newall, the Chief of the Air Staff. Planning continued through the winter of 1939-1940, and by March 1940 a force of around three divisions was prepared to sail. On 12 March, however, Finland sued for peace, and the expedition had to be abandoned.

The mood naturally cooled after Finland joined the War itself, of course.

At the end of the conflict you also get the crazy Lappland War, with four-way fighting between Finns, Germans, Soviets and Norwegians.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapland_War
>>
>>51047293
>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapland_War

I've always wondered what would've happened had the brits jumped in and helped the Finns. Having the Soviets occupying the Germans' attention is about the only thing that really gave Britain the breathing room it needed to fight back, and by extension, stay free long enough for America to use it as a floating aircraft carrier. Had the Brits really pissed the soviets off, WWII could've gone very differently.

I mean, Finland's initial war had a huge impact on the war in and of itself. The Germans, seeing the Soviets get their asses handed to them by a woefully underequipped force, figured they could take the USSR no problem. Had the Soviets not floundered so badly, Germany may have kept a peace treaty with the Soviets longer or something, which could've had a major impact on the western front.

I mean I'm no history professor or anything, but I always found that what if scenario fascinating. It would've been a wildly different outcome had that happened I think. Germany still would've lost I'm sure, but an "operation unthinkable" might've been a lot more likely.
>>

And yeah, if nuclear bombers are launching from Britain, Germany isn't going to be effectively retaliating, unless their postal service resists the fuhrer enough to dip in to the judenphysik and they miraculously unfuck themselves enough to maybe nuke france.

which they won't.
>>
>>51045818
I suggest going for a roughly 1943 unit.
That way won't feel underpowered if playing against the Airborne or Marines (which are probably rather late-ish equipped) but you also won't enter the cheese area of 1945.

Defense of Sicily/Italy or Kursk are very "nice" and interesting theaters if you want to make your unit a bit more characterful and based on a real force.

>I ordered a bunch of these:

Those are the old (and terrible) spures. You should have gone with the Grenadier spures instead. But they work for what i described above and they also work for 1944/45 if you want late war, its just that the poses aren't that great and their heads are terribly large.

Oh, and in case you don't know: You also need bases for those if you ordered single spures during the 50%-off-sale.
>>
>>51046068
>If you get all Heer infantry, all you can field is Heer infantry,

That is just wrong. There is literally no difference between a Grenadier and a Infantryman. If he rides in a halftrack (or a truck, like most units since halftracks were rare) to accompany a panzer division he is a panzergrenadier. If not, he is not.
Training was the same, equippment was the same (basically, some special units like Großdeutschland obviously got new stuff earlier/more of the good stuff) and uniform also was the same.

There is literally no reason at all to not buy the grenadier sprues if you want to go 1943 and later. One or two sprues of Blitzkrieg Infantry (or russian winter soldiers) won't hurt to get a little bit more variety of poses (prone bodies). The russian one is a bit of a mixed bag because only 5 of the 8 bodies are usable because of their greatcoat, but it also comes with one prone body.

>Grenadiers aren't SS, Grenadiers are regular Germans with late war equipment (1944-1945)

Grenadiers is just the word for "Infantryman" the germans used from 1942 onwards. Nothing else.
Panzergrenadiers (either SS or Wehrmacht) = mechanized (in reality often just motorized) Infantry
SS-Grenadier = SS-Infantry
Grenadier = Infantry

From 1944 onwards this changed again and all were called "Volksgrenadier". SS called their regular Infantry units "Waffen-Grenadier".
>>
Relative newfag here, I have absolutely nothing in 28mm scale and think that I'll take the sale as an opportunity to start, what would you recommend I get? I'm interested in WW2, should I get an all-german force to start with or go with 2 opposing sides (i.e. Germans and Brits or Soviets) ? Also, what do you think the convertability of the allies sprues (Americans, Brits, Soviets and USMC) would be to play some african skirmishes in the 60s? And if you deem that a possibility which do you think would work best?
>>

Do you know a friend who is interested in the game without minis? If so, go for two smaller armies so you can play with him and maybe he will get into the game as well.
If you already know people playing, you can go for whatever force you want.

>would be to play some african skirmishes in the 60s?

US Marines.
Maybe add the weapon sprues of the different other nations to the mix. I think Stens, PPsHs and other non-us-submachine guns were widely used after ww2.

Why Marines? Because they come with ragged uniforms (even ripped off sleeves on some of them), a couple of heads have beards etc. They will work perfectly fine as some kind of mercenary force almost right out of the box.
>>
>>51052348

Nah, Spec Ops are not good for this. Too much attachments plus too few weapons. The survivors give you plenty of dakka. Some things ike machine guns are missing so TAG is a good recommendation for RPKs and M60s.

Perhaps this (and not the dummkopf Player rolling on British Isles instead of Transit) was the reason the Kapitanleutnant was dreaming about sinking a Small British Freighter with his Big Deck Gun just as the lookout screamed: "Fluegzeug! 11 uhr!"

Arriving at the coast of Britain, the Boat spotted the 5900 tonne "Cherokee" with an Escort nearby.
Kapitanleutnant waited 'till nighftall, before launching 3 torpedoes from Medium range.
Unfortunately, only 1 hit.
Fortunately, the Escort failed to spot us - and while it was busy searching for us in all the wrong places, we surfaced near the "Cherookee" and sunk her with gunfire.

Next stop: 3700 tonne "Kyleglen" - sunk by gunfire @ 50 paces in broad daylight ...
Okay, so, not so much a stop as a speed bump on the way to:
4700 tonne "Aeas" with Escort nearby.

Again, night engagement with 3 torps (from Fore & Aft torpedo tubes) @ medium range yields 2 hits & sunk "Aeas".
This time, however, there would be no escape: Escort spots us, and delivers it's Depth Charges with unerring precision (i.e. bastard of a Player rolls a double 6 +1 for Night Surface Attack) right on our fool heads.

As luck would have it, I was near the escape hatch at the time, and managed to get away.
And this, my grandson, is how I found myself spending the next 6 years of the war in ... well, not exactly nice & cosy, but still okay ... British POW camp.

The End.

Most recce forces would have motorcycles, kubels, or small halftracks (I think it's the 251)

Donnybrook is good, although slanted a bit towards the 18th century and less for the 80 Years War. It uses card activation and polyhedral dice, and it's got good civvie and bandit lists.

About 20 figures a side gives a good game.

If you are going the SoBH(Shakos) route, I think the 3 Musketeers/Pirate mod might be a bit more appropriate. As I recall, it's got pikes, breastplates (as opposed to cuirasses) and all the firearms that you'd need.

Here are a couple options - you could take pieces of the recon battalion from a Panzer division or model your force after a light division. Apologies for the poor image, the book is rather delicate so I didn't press it very flat. Each stand or vehicle represents a platoon or 4-6 tanks/guns; itallics are items normally not on the table and 'ds' next to a few stands indicates it's double size for taking up spaces in transport which obviously wouldn't translate to BA.

The March 1940 patrol was the roughest one yet. Tasked with an Atlantic patrol the U-33 set off with high hopes. Things were quiet and calm until they were a few days past passing Scapa Flow when they came across HX.26 running from Halifax to Liverpool.

KptLt Kross decided to move in close during the night and found a couple of big juicy targets in the middle of the convoy. The 5500 ton freighter West Notus and the 8000 ton tanker Anadara. A quick fire of 4 torpedos, 2 at each ship. The 2 torpedos targeting the West Notus both missed but the 2 fired at the Anadara were more successful. The torpedos hit amidships practically breaking the tanker in half and the fireball lit the night sky. The master, 53 crew members and eight gunners from the Anadara were lost. The U-33 evaded detection.

A few days later they came across HX.27 in the afternoon and the Kpt decided to be more cautious and approach from long range and managed to catch sight of 2 freighters. The 5600 ton Seattle Spirit and the 5000 ton Kumasian. Feeling confident the U-33 could avoid detection as they were using their G7e electric torpedos the submarine lined up and fired off a spread of 4.

One torpedo struck the Seattle Spirit on the port side amidships in the engine room and quickly flooded the ship, causing a boiler explosion and killing one officer and two crewmen on watch below. The most of the nine officers, 28 crewmen, eleven armed guards (the ship was armed with one 4in, four .50cal and four .30cal guns) and seven passengers (Canadians) on board abandoned ship in three lifeboats. One sailor died of shock and exposure after jumping into the water.

On the Kumasian the U-3 observed a hit amidships with the second torpedo and heard three detonations after the boat had to dive. One crew member was lost. The master, 43 crew members, six gunners and nine passengers were picked up by HMS La Malouine (K 46) (T/Lt V.D.H. Bidwell, RNR) and landed at Liverpool.

And then the allied escorts came streaming in on the U-33s position......

These were not the quality of destroyers that the U-33 had faced before. These destroyers knew their job and for over 3 hours dogged and harassed the U-33 as it tried to evade and escape. Several times the destroyers managed to lay depth charges practically on top of the submarine. The hull buckled in a couple of places from the near hits as well as one of the diesel engines being shook so hard that the seals on the oil containers burst spraying hot oil in the engine room, injuring the Chief Engineer and several of the crew in the engine room. Several more severe injuries were reported thru out the submarine. One crew members hand being crushed as some heavy machinery shifted, several other crew members suffering head and neck wounds from being tossed around.

Eventually the destroyers gave up and allowed the U-33 to limp away. The diesel engine was quickly repaired, but almost the entire crew had injuries of some sort. A full half of the crew were out of action. The U-33 headed back to Keil.

2 days after the attack the subs gyro compass (which had been acting up since the attack) failed completely. KptLt Kross was then forced to rely on astral navigation to get them back to Germany.

They managed to slip back into Keil on April 3, 1940.

The sub would require 2 months of repairs from the hull damage sustained and almost 1/2 of the crew would have to be replaced due to long term convalescent injuries.

It was during this time that 1st Watch Officer Lt.z.S. Gunter Kreiger showed exceptional leadership and knowledge of the submarine and was instrumental in keeping the submarine going through the difficult time. Upon arrival at Keil, Kpt Kross put the 1WO in for a commendation and a recommendation that he be promoted and given command of his own boat.

It had been a good patrol. The best to date. 18600 tons sunk, but it cost Kpt Kross half of his crew.

One thing I've come across for the really old english is that reading it aloud really helps for a lot of people. I'm ok with it myself but sounding out the words is essential pre-standardised spelling. That way it's enough to at least get the general idea.

Which reminds me; next up on my reading list is 'The English Civil War at First Hand'. Which is apparently full of letters and memoirs of the era. I have no idea if the text has been modernised but either way I expect that'll be a fun read.

I blame the Greeks. They invented our alphabet, and had two different lower-case esses, one just for the end of a word.
The long s was our version of S-in-mid-word.

I dumb.

In other news I've almost finished the supply train for my ostfront Chinese. I wanted to do Chiang Kai-Shek at a map, so found a german crewman from a PSC marder kit, who looke kindo f Chiang-ish, and gave him a salt and pepper mustache (Although its hard to see)

The maps are real maps of shanghai in 1937, scaled way down and printed out.

I still need to base this thing and I'll do some details on Chiang's hat, the blue circle with the white star and some other buttons.

Almost finished my 250 point Chinese force for ostfront (11 bases of infantry just need basing and I'm done)
Complete 250 point list will be:
5 Mortar teams
11 platoons (22 bases of infantry, roughly equivalent to 550 men)
3 Vickers 6-ton light tanks
SdKfz. 222 armored car
6 Gai Liang Field guns
2 Carden-Loyd tankettes

Should be fun to field a mostly infantry force with no artillery, only mortars. Hopefully nice and mobile and suited to city fighting.
