Hey guys,
Happy new year! I'm a beginner when it comes to D&D. I've DM'ed about 10 sessions with a group of friends (on and off, tried about 3 different campaigns) but they never went too well. I feel like it was partly my fault for not keeping the group focused. We didn't get along that well either so now I'm planning on starting anew with the 2 more serious people from the old group and 2 total newbies.
So I'd like to ask for tips on how to DM properly, keep the group focused and entertained, keep the story flowing, this kind of thing.
I'm also looking for a good adventure for 3-4 players (+DM), preferably starting from level 1, that's easy to DM. I know there's tons of resources out there but it's a bit overwhelming and I feel the quality of most isn't that high. Lost mine of Phandelver is out of the question since 2 of the players have already gone through a considerable chunk of that campaign, but something similar in length and detail would be nice.
One final question, how do you usually play? I own the Castle Ravenloft board game and we normally use the tiles and figurines from that set during our 5e sessions, but as you can probably imagine it doesn't fit too well. I'm wondering if there is a better way to do it outside of just buying lots of official figurine sets.
Thanks in advance!

In order to learn good GMing, you need a system that
- doesn't work against you and
- contains useful GMing advice.
D&D 5e doesn't fulfill either criterion.

If you want to learn running modules, Ryuutama and its two sample scenarios have you covered.
If you want to learn how to sandbox, Apocalypse World is where it's at.

As for props, I got into RPGs through D&D 3.5's board game, and those figurines are the only ones I've ever used. Having the perfect figurine for every single PC, NPC and monster is not only unnecessary, but impratical and expensive as all hell.

We draw quick maps on Paper, or Game online via roll20.

Now, you need to be comfortable with the system, creative and reasonable to be a good gm. Brainstorm. Write down Notes so you Dont forget names.
I like to roll a random encounter+treasure and think of how I'd make that situation fit into my current campaign, and how to make it More interesting.

Have you tried Lost Mines of Phandelver or Princes of the Apocalypse?

>how do you usually play?
My group normally uses roll20 because we don't live near each other, but I prefer playing in person. People can easily get distracted by 4chan/reddit/facebook and that will really slow down your game and sap the fun. If you can, lobby for a "no phones at the table" rule.
