>How do they even stay profitable?
From what I picked up from Shadowrun, mostly by not paying their freelance writers.

Only because the guy in charge was taking it to build a massive house. But don't worry, nobody was punished and the money was never actually returned to the company, they paid the writers from other funds.

The guy said he's sorry and that he's a better human with a bigger house now.
It's how America works.

"Owes a significant balance and is working to rectify the situation" usually means "Settled out of court and if the money isn't paid back, the house will be liquidated to recoup funds"
Unless they're in a state with homestead laws, and then the money is gone.

But hey, at least it led to job creation. Bull got his job at CGL for his loyal service as forum mod white knight, bravely deleting threads where people were being trolls posting bait like, "Is CGL stealing money from it's writers? Is the business going to close? Is this why my copy of 20th Anniversary SR is 8 months late without an explanation?"

AFAIK, Coleman is still living there, and is still the owner of CGL (at least the only one known publically).

Ask the battletech general

Actually a lot of the Shadowrun writers never got paid at all.

IIRC it's his wife who technically owns the company right now.

They basically don't have costs so it takes very little money to stay profitable. They have to pay for a few print runs of books a year and a few people's salaries and that's about it, since they stiff their freelancers/demo teams/fans and don't maintain an office of any sort. They have such small overhead that they squeak by on what little they make from epubs and their few physical products.
