So, quick question for any DMs here. Has anybody ever made demons a race in their own right instead of just afterlife-dwelling jerks? Made them playable? Is there a way to do it that doesn't make them into Plot Buttons(TM)s?

I'm also interested in this. My player recently made a bunch of allies with demons. I need a demon concept that's not "evil corrupters"

In my home setting, demons aren't playable, but they're not evil. They inhabit shrines out in the wilderness and have the power of Creation within it, and can give blessings, determine people's innate abilities, and go to heaven or hell as they wish to relax.

In my setting, demons live in the world same as everyone else. The crux of them being evil is that demon currency is the souls of other mortal races. Having more souls makes you more socially powerful in demon culture, so demons 'should' try to get as much souls as quickly as possible. PC ideas that have been thrown at me usually entail characters that simply value other things more than being rich and getting caught up in the big demonic rat race, but have also been demons that just try to get souls in a more roundabout way. One specifically was a sleazy lawyer party face partially inspired by pic related. They ended up advising the royal council on some city planning after a big battle. Ended up rebuilding major streets into the symbol of his demonic patron, netting some really big souls.

>people are evil
>evil souls go to hel
>evil souls are punished and tortured by demons
>demons are therefore the universe's jailers and interrogators

No. In my setting, Demons are literally the nightmares of the slumbering Great Old Ones made manifest in a toxic shadow-realm which mirrors the physical world, if darkness and light were inverted and every substance was caustic, poisonous, or toxic in some way. Having taken on a life of their own, these poisonous shadows seek to kill the Great Old Ones, and infect Azathoth itself with their vile whispers.
So, no. You can't play one. The closest you can get is playing a demonologist or warlock in service to them, drawing on their power to corrupt the physical world.

This is a pretty interesting take on demonic magic desu. Haven't seen something quite like it before

You'd have to define what you mean by 'demons' first. Because 'afterlife-dwelling jerks' is kinda the definition.
