The easiest answer is that it doesn't really matter, and you should pick whatever you like best/best represents your character/idea or whatever

The better answer is that it doesn't Really matter until 7th level with the Aura or aura equivilent. That basically means your options are Ancients and Crown and what's better for your party can vary based on number, composition, or how often you expect to find enemy spellcasters

Crown is an okay oath that deals less damage, but for the level you are going for it is 100% the best "tanking" oath.
All of its oath abilities is about getting hit and preventing everyone else from being hit.
It is also an amazing oath at level 9 because of spirit guardians alone.
You will be more annoying to hit as a conquest and deal more damage as a devotion/vengeance, but your ability to control the battlefield as crown is great.

Why is the Nature domain so fucking poorly designed? Who was the fucking genius that thought giving a Cleric both heavy armor proficiency and barkskin as a domain spell was a good idea? Jesus fuck those domain spells are fucking awful.
>>
One of my players (being a big ol days) wants to play a pixie, and asked if I would homebrew one together, because I said if anyone wants homebrew it would have to be either reviewed or made by me.

I'm not a fan of a flying race, but given different stats to the pixie in the MM, would a hovering PC be tolerable? Able to fly over pits maybe, but any decent amoubt of height and the winds become too strong for tiny ass wings, so a flight speed of 25-30 but with a limited height of say 20 feet?

For stats I was thinking along the lines of the volos guide races, and giving maybe 2 Dex, 1 cha and -2 STR?
Probably unable to wear any armour (would be too heavy to allow flight) but due to small size probably give them 13+Dex AC.
Being tiny they would be even more limited than small races. I was thinking maybe allowing them to two hand small weapons, and maybe making a pixie bow 1d4, though they want to play a warlock so that's not too important. Just picturing them holding a dagger like a two handed weapon.
Probably some innate spell casting, druid craft at will, maybe sleep, invisibility at 3 once a day each.
Maybe the elves thing that gives resist to charm and immunity to sleep spells.

Does that sound okay?
>>
>>50936364
You cast barkskin on someone else.
>>
>>50936105
Paladin 1 is a squire isn't it? It isn't until level 3 when you take up your oath and become a real paladin.

Okay so what the fuck are Firbolg supposed to actually look like? The only consistent imagery I can find is they're kinda big and tend to have red hair.

But sometimes they're white, freckly nords and other times they're blue-grey and fresh from a punch to the nose.
>>
>>50936406
Oh and I told the player that i would be giving disadvantage on alot of things, namely just about every strength save/check, which he said he was okay with
>>
>>50936406
>Probably some innate spell casting, druid craft at will, maybe sleep, invisibility at 3 once a day each.
>Maybe the elves thing that gives resist to charm and immunity to sleep spells.
These are fine, but I'd counterbalance it with some flaws related to being so much smaller.

Maybe reduce their hit dice by 1 step, and give them disadvantage in strength checks (as occurs in creatures reduced in size via the Enlarge/Reduce spell).
>>
>>50936497
I did think of reducing hit dice, but I didn't want to mess with the class stats too much. And disadvantage on strength is pretty much given. As an addition, because losing that much HP seems like a big deal, maybe adding in stealth in other players squares like halflings as well?
>>
>>50936482
Its because its one of the many things D&D takes the name from something then makes it fairly different and so you end up with them being portrayed as everything in between.
>>
>>50936482
Their appearance changes from edition to edition. I'd say younger Firbolg look more like humans, but older ones begin to appear more "monstrous" and they eventually retreat into the woods. Make then fey-touched humans perhaps? You'd have to extend their lifespan, maybe tie their lifespan to the place where they were born? If their homewood gets cut down or burned they die? That would be a good reason to adventure, to protect the woods, and they would be natural members of the Emerald Enclave. I dunno just trying to flesh them out a bit and explain the differences.
>>
>>50936523
>As an addition, because losing that much HP seems like a big deal, maybe adding in stealth in other players squares like halflings as well?
That sounds fine, and would make sense.

Since this is a one-off for your PC, it's fine to load them up with this many special traits, but make sure they remember all of it.
>>
>>50935566
grats on getting laid OP
>>
>>50936560
>>50936523
Instead of reducing hit dice, it would be about the same to reduce con by 2 instead of STR, still on average 1 HP per level less, and doesn't mess with what classes are supposed to have. Disadvantage on everything strength and The weapon limitation is good enough to replace -2 str
>>
>>50936406
The built in disadvantage is pretty redundant, since they're going to have it from being a Tiny race anyway. They might be able to grapple a Halfling but that's about it.

Flight speed with a limited height is good, maybe with a built in glide as well.

The most important thing to remember with 5E race design is that it's all about the benefits and not so much on the penalties. Instead of finangling with all of the details, try and refine it to the most definitive pixie features.

And those features can be redefined if they seem to powerful, see also your thought with flight.
I'd try something like a passive dim-light in a 5 foot radius or something to help with the fact that they'd be killer in stealth.

Everything like armor and weapons can ultimately be solved via custom/magical equipment, so there isn't a huge point in making those limitations (aside from flight)
>>
>>50935662
money and friendship
>>
>>50936633
Passive light is a great idea, and the disadvantage would also be to strength saves and such IE avoiding being blown by a gust of wind, or checks like breaking open a door.

The weapon and armour thing is partly to give some bonus for being smol as fuck and hard to hit, and also similar to enlarge/reduce lowering damage by a die, picture a medium longsword being lowered to a D6 at small, and a d4 at tiny, essentially being a dagger at that point.

It really depends on what your DM says would be the power levels of a squire, anyway.

Half-pixie, half... Something small.
So not tiny, but small instead. Smaller than a gnome or haflling, but not quite tiny.

Can wear armour if they fucking want, come on.
They have a flight ability. Their flying speed is equal to their walk speed. However, at the end of their turn, if they are mid-air, they fall - it's identical to eagle barbarian's flight. They can and will take fall damage from this.
Speed is 25ft.
Druid craft at will, sleep 1/day, invisibility 1/day as you said.
Resist to charm, immunity to sleep.
Can talk to small animals like a gnome can.

Something like that, anyway. That's how I'd design it.

There isn't really a definitive answer, it's highly dependent on what bad/good habits you have as a creative personality.

For me, general rules of thumb:
>Better to say "Yes, but..." than "No"
>Players are smarter than they seem
>Players are dumber than you'd think
>Better to keep a good pace and handwave rules than to stick to the rules

Is 15 AC acceptable for a two handed Barb at level 5? Trying to get a better sense of the numbers in 5e
>>
>>50937309
How is it any worse than the one I was replying to?
It fits 5e much better, considering it doesn't have arbitrary armour limits tied to race, and it has it as a small creature instead of a tiny creature. It also has less dex because that would drive them to become rogues more likely, which feels less fitting to a pixie than, say, a sorcerer or feylock.

I've improved on everything in terms of making it fit into 5e.

Stop worrying about balance.

If the players have too easy a fight, make it harder on the fly, and vice versa. It's super easy, and didn't require worry.

As an extension to that, don't be like the retards on this thread who read about the players being allowed to do something cool and shit all over it because while raw, they think it was op.

Don't treat the players like they're the center of the universe. Odds are they'll do something retarded. Make their characters live with the consequences.

Good points >>50937527. Especially in my 3.PF games, getting bogged down in whether or not the rules officially support some specific thing, rather than just going with what makes sense at the time, can completely kill the pacing, and the fun right along with it. Having played a couple games in 5e, it looks a lot better in this regard, but it's still a practice as a DM to keep in mind. Same with saying, "Yes, but," or the slightly more ominous, "You can certainly try," as opposed to outright denying a reasonable request that may not fit neatly into the rules. Bear in mind, this pertains to actions during the game, and is in the interest of preserving the flow of action, but it's well within your right to say "no" to your players as well. Indeed, some players, sometimes to no fault of their own, may try to take a mile, given an inch, and a DM that does not assert themselves and draw a line can find themselves in a tough spot.

I love to shit on homebrew, but I was merely making suggestions to improve it.

If you're already using a halberd, get PAM first, and then GWM afterwards.

Barbarians get most of their bonus actions and most of their reactions, so PAM is great. Also, they get +rage damage to every attack, including that bonus and reaction.

Fighters love GWM, though they can use PAM.
Paladins love PAM, though they can use GWM.
Barbarians are kind of inbetween. If you're using a maul, you can get away with GWM, though later on if they have enough ASIs they could get both. GWM has affinity with reckless attack, PAM has affinity with rage damage.
>>
Why aren't you basing your characters after DotA Two Characterscheck 'em :^)
>>
>>50938059
I had forgotten about PAM's reaction attack. Being a Protector Aasimar that gets that 1/turn extra damage with Radiant Soul activated, that could be really good extra damage in a big fight.

1d10 Halberd
3 Str
2 from rage
then 5 from Radiant Soul
A 1d10+10 opportunity attack sounds pretty cool

>>50938028
Is there any real way to tell the AC of a dude without metagaming or is it completely GM reliant?
>>
>>50938104
Guess that makes a butcher out of (You).
>>
>>50938197
easy actually, when you miss on a 14 and hit on a 16, or you ask the dm whatthe enemy looks like. it's not really metagaming for your character to know that giant beast with iron-hard plates covering it's body may be a tad harder to wound than some dork in leathers.
>>
>>50938197

"What kind of armor do I see that he's wearing?"
"You can tell, now that you're closer, that he's wearing X armor and does/does not have a shield."
>>
>>50938114
Oh, if you get bonus damage to your attacks, all the more reason to go PAM and all the less reason to use GWM. GWM is less effective the more damage you do - you decrease the chance of dealing your already-increased damage, just to potentially increase damage. The bonus attack at least gives you a chance of dealing that extra damage if you missed your other two attacks or used them to grapple or something, and the reaction is.. Yeah.

Though I think there might be bonus action clashes with both rage and activating the feature, you'll still get good use out of the bonus action attack.

>>50938197
You can generally guess unless the DM throws out edgy sonic OC-tier monsters that have 'His shadow powers give him BONUS AC!', though you'd have to metagame and roughly know all the monster ACs already and hope your DM actually understands AC when designing monsters.
Obviously, if you attack a few times you can work out the AC and apply that to similar monsters.
>>
>>50938197
Sizing up an enemy should require no in-game time or action at all, just ask for a description from the DM about what they're wearing and wielding. Maybe if they're more monstrous, attempt a relevant knowledge check to get a little bestiary information. Also, you should get a feel for their AC within a round or so of combat. Not much to it.

Are there any resources out there that sort monsters by environment, as opposed to alphabetically? E.g., a section for creatures found in swamps, creatures found in caves, creatures found in the Underdark, etc. I'm trying to design some encounters and I'm not sure how to limit my options faster than reading through the entire MM, along with all the other books with monsters in 'em (Volo's etc.)

How many books have monster statblocks in them, anyway? Not counting the Appendix of the PHB, I know the Monster Manual and Volo's Guide probably have the most, but then there are also all the modules. Do those have unique creatures in them?
>>
>>50938197
Most things hover around 14-16 AC. Unless it's obviously better armored, like it's literally wearing platemail or has overtly thick skin/scales, 15 AC is a fairly safe assumption.
>>
So I'm playing a Firbolg Druid, trying out the Circle of the Shepherd. I want my character to be a sort of an up-close caster, focusing on spells like Thunderwave and Shillelagh. Any ideas/advice?

So I'm working on a homebrew paladin sublcass, the Oath of Romance. A subclass that focuses on buffing allies mechanics-wise, and flavor-wise is dedicated to ideals of beauty, truth, and love. Basically a paladin oath for worshipers of gods of love, art, and beauty(Venus, Apollo, and Hathor being prime candidates from IRL pantheons.

I just really like the idea because I'm an amateur writer and poet that sometimes would like to pretend he's a literal warrior of art. It's going well so far, I just need to hammer out the 15th and 20th level features.

I wanted to use the Homebrewery to make up a nice PDF of it and use pic related in it, but I can't seem to find the sauce on this thing. Reverse image search isn't pulling up shit, and I usually try to credit artists whenever I blatantly steal their stuff. Anyone happen to know who did it?

>Forearm strapped shields: Weapons with the two-handed and versatile properties can be wielded with two hands while wearing these shields. A creature proficient with shields may use its reaction to grant +2 AC against an incoming attack that it can see.

>Buckler/Targe: +2 AC against melee attacks. Can be wielded as a one-handed light weapon if you are proficient with shields, dealing 1d4 damage. A creature proficient with shields may use its reaction to provide +2 AC against an incoming ranged attack that it can see.

>Pavise: +2 AC when held. Can be set up as freestanding cover or reset for individual usage. Provides three-quarters cover against ranged attacks covered by the pavise.

Would this suffice?

Apparently the guy does requests for /tg/ so they'll probably be cool with you using it. Judging by the name of the piece they may have had a similar idea in mind themselves.

I like this idea as well. I'm not so sure about the name, but I suppose the other meaning of "romance" (which doesn't necessarily have to do with "romantic" love as we understand it, e.g., Arthurian romance) is also generally concerned regardless with stuff like beauty, truth, and love. I wasn't sure whether to object to that or not, because the name either doesn't quite work or it works wonderfully, depending on what the subclass is actually like.

I'm also willing to help you come up with 15th and 20th level features if you're willing to post what you have so far for the earlier ones.
>>
>>50938754
purely RAW, I'm pretty sure constructs such as golems no longer qualify as objects as listed in Stone Shape. Gargoyles can appear to be inanimate but nothing says that they are actually stone and thus affected by Stone Shape.

>>
>>50938781
Okay that makes sense. Since a golem has some form of magic binding it together, a spell like that would have a difficult time ripping it apart. Still I think if one of my players is creative enough to think of that, then I might give a couple d8 in damage, or possibly give it permanent disadvantage from having a limb ripped off.
>>
>>50938776
My swarthy compatriot! Makes sense since I found it in a /tg/ archive.

I chose to name it the Oath of Romance after the Romanticism movement in art. Emphasis on passion, individualism, nature, the past, all that feelsy stuff that the Enlightenment said was a load of shit. Perhaps it is a bit obscure, but I can't think of a better name atm. Anyway, here's what I got.

Oath Spells
>3rd color spray, sleep
>5th calm emotions, warding bond
>9th dispell magic, tongues
>13th private sanctum, conjure woodland beings
>17th legend lore, creation

Channel Divinity
> Inspiring Beauty. You can use your Channel Divinity to inspire your allies. You may use a bonus action on your turn to sing a few lines of song, speak a fragment of a poem, or play a few notes on an instrument. Choose one creature other than yourself within 60ft who can hear you. That creature gains a Divine Inspiration die, a d6.
Once within the next 10 minutes, the creature can roll the die and add the number rolled to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw it makes. The creature can wait until after it rolls the d20 before deciding to use the Divine Inspiration die, but must decide before the GM says whether the roll succeeds or fails. Once the Divine Inspiration die is rolled, it is lost. A creature can have only one Divine Inspiration die at a time. Your Divine Inspiration die changes when you reach certain levels in this class. The die becomes a d8 at 7th level, a d10 at 15th level, and a d12 at 20th level.

Cont.
>>
>>50938888

>Alluring Presence. As an action on your turn, you present your holy symbol and exude beauty, using your Channel Divinity. A creature within 30 feet that can see and hear you gains advantage on Charisma (Performance) checks, Charisma (Persuasion) checks, and Charisma saves for one minute.

Aura of Love
>Starting at the 7th level, your affection for your companions manifests as a powerful divine barrier. You and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks. At the 18th leve, the range of this aura increases to 30ft.
>>
>>50938861
Yeah, if I were DM I would definitely run with that. 5 cubic feet is a lot even for a large creature, so I'd have it be incapacitated or restrained for at least one turn until the stone reconstitutes. Maybe give extra damage to attacks that target the interior.
>>
>>50938861
On one hand, I've never been thrilled with magic classes having an answer for everything. On the other hand, I think I'd have to reward a player for having the right tool for the encounter and employing it. Some damage is straightforward, but a debuff based on the sudden disfiguration would be more interesting.

Seems like it to me. I thought I'd have more ideas, but I'm embarrassed to say I don't. I was thinking, though, at the beginning, that an interesting tenet of the Oath could be something to do with a resistance to the use of Charm Person or mind control effects. It seems to me that that would make sense in the context of a paladin focused on individual freedom as well as truth. I suppose an immunity to those sort of effects might work as a higher level ability but it doesn't seem particularly splashy as those abilities might want to be. Sorry I don't have anything better to offer.

Make Strahd mean, and make it clear (in character) how their only means of escape is to kill him. The Vistana is good for this. My players had trouble with motivation until I made this clear.
Take their stuff, kill their friends, and them, get them lost in the mist, don't let them sleep easy. Make them hate him. Don't forget that he's super smart and you have a long time to mull over his decisions.
Also, make sure to describe the food they're eating throughout the adventure. Their trail rations should dwindle soon, and they'll be stuck with wolf meat, beetroot soup, hard bread, and wine. Adds to the oppressive feel of the world, and gives any chance of finding nice food and warm rooms more appeal.

Hmm, I didn't think to specifically mention that, but I think the tenets I had drafted up so far covers that. Probably should have posted those since they give a good idea of the flavor I'm looking for.

>Speak Truth. Always tell the truth. Beauty points to the truth, and it is the key to unlocking even the coldest of hearts. Falsehoods are ugly, they breed distrust and hatred.

>Bring Peace. Violence is your last resort. Strive to resolve conflicts peacefully, but do not hesitate to fight to defend yourself and others. Life is too beautiful to waste.

>Nurture Love. You must always do your best to help love grow wherever it can. Provide what aid you can whenever it is appropriate. Remember to persue love in your own life as your strive to bring it into that of others.

>Have Respect. Sometimes love isn't meant to be. Respect the boundaries of others and make sure they do the same.

>Seek Beauty. Beauty is what makes life good. Spread it as often as you can and defend it where it exists. Appreciate it in all its forms. Devote yourself to creating your own beauty as well.

Medium armour allows you to get 16 AC with 14 dex with no stealth disadvantage or 17 AC with 14 dex with stealth disadvantage. And light armour is up to 17-
Oh, fuck, I just remembered that druids aren't supposed to wear metal armour, though. It'll be much worse for them.

Unless you can get anything better than hide, there's no reason to wear medium armour. However, wisdom is still more important than dex, so I'd probably aim for upping dex, but I'm not super confident when it's not a moon druid since turning into an animal replaces your str/dex/con scores.

I can safely say you really don't need to use strength, though. If you did something weird and maxed dex you'd use dex, but eh

quarterstaff (with shillelagh) and shield is probably what you'd be using, though.

Wanting some opinions. I'm about to play in a mid-level campaign and I want to play a support spellcaster, but I'm torn on what I should pick for my class. Should I go for Sorcerer or Wizard? I like the divination school for Wizard, but as a Sorcerer I can twin cast spells like haste, slow, or polymorph. Tough choices.

Sorcerer's only real trick is to twin haste/polymorph/whatever.

Wizard gets so much more, your party will be thanking you for throwing rope tricks around or actually having the spells known to keep 'slow fall' prepared or any number of things like that.

Bard or cleric is also an option.

Wisdom is mostly about perception so it's noticing clues about a body like maybe how warm it is or what color their nail beds or lips are.

Intelligence is more about taking obvious clues and making a logical deduction from them, like solving the old riddle about the suicide on an ice cube or whatever

I looked again at the PHB and it says investigation is used for determining cause of injury. "discern from the appearance of a wound what kind of weapon dealt it"
It's beginning to sound like my DM and me have just made a mistake (we're both fairly new)
I think for anything you're searching with your hands instead of sight, sound or smell you should be using investigation instead of perception as well, or am I mistaken on that one too?

An angelic sponsor that was absolutely insanely rigid and unforgiving. Eventually the aasimar stopped putting up with it when the voice in his head *insisted* he'd better not help that orphan. Whatever, threaten me all you like with how I'll never be a paladin or cleric. I can help people without your damn "power".

Alternatively, an aasimar that was obsessed with doing good and eventually had the voice die down as they grew up and no longer seemed to need guidance. They went quite mad and made a pact in order to keep "doing good". Unfortunately due to some combination of their unhinged nature and a fiend's influence, they're in a sort of Pyrovision world, and won't know the difference between axing a naughty child or rapacious goblin unless someone points him at the right (or wrong) one. And he's determined to "save" everyone.

yes, that's exactly what everyone is implying. If you're good at something, having something explicitly BAD happen 5% of the time is fucking retarded and can ruin a otherwise serious campaign. If you want to have any semblance of a actual functioning campaign that isn't just memes and XD XD XD XD XD XD XD then having something fail 5% of the time is fucking asinine and just not how it works. 1 out of 20 times when opening a door, you don't randomly bash your head against the wall. 1 out of 20 times when communicating with someone, you don't randomly flip your middle finger at them or come across as so rude that they get mad at you.
it's not about 'not wanting to suffer the consequences' it's about not wanting consequences laid on you that you had literally 0 control over and had literally 0 reason to happen. If you already failed a save, there's no fucking reason to have a 'megafail', it's punishment enough.

How do you or your DM deal with insight?

I feel like a lot of players overuse it as a method of forgoing roleplay.

>I don't trust this random npc shopkeeper
>I want to insight check them
>Tell me all his secrets and lies

In real life you can not trust someone but you'll never know the actual truth.
>>
>>50941146
Steve was in close proximity to dangerous animals far more than just twenty times across his career.
Besides in a game context it would make more sense like this way
>You spot an aggravated stingray in the water
>initiative is rolled, Steve goes first
>Roight, i'm gonna try to figure out what's got 'im in a shake and calm 'im down
>Steve rolls a 1, adds his proficiency and wisdom mod to the check
>Aw crikey, does an 8 handle it?
>'Fraid not, Steve. Is that your turn?
>Blimey, guess it is, mate
>The stingray attacks you
>Steve is dropped to 0HP and fails his saving throws
>>
>>50941198
If they pass the DC then I truthfully tell them if they can see if the NPC is lying or not, if they fail the DC I tell them the opposite. Insight isn't detect thoughts.

No anon, the key is to NOT give the "players" enough information.
It's to give one player enough information in front of all the others and watch them shit themselves. I use it for atmosphere. Yeah that makes sense seeing as there wouldn't be any chain to jingle and I'm imagining this bone armor to be a bit more flexible.

Another thing I'm thinking for the fighter is perhaps a triceratops skull shield that can be used as an offhand weapon but he forgoes the plus 2 AC until his next turn. I got the Idea from the Monster Manual lizardfolk art with the turtle shield that apparently has 2 punch daggers on it.

And while the off-hand attack shield is a neat idea, It's imposing extra mental burden to the player, something 5e tend to avoid like plague.

It kinda disturb the game flow and immersion too, if you (or someone else on the table) have to remind him that the enemy attack hit because he lost 2 AC due to his last attack. Which could happen every few round.
>>
>>50937811
For characters using Halberds pole arm master is better cause you get a bonus action attack and attacks of opportunity.

well the druid will be able to switch out her spells quickly enough once they realise that standing around with bleeding wounds isn't a great idea. Beyond that you'll probably just have to apply pressure slowly until you find how much will kill them. Don't be surprised if that isn't very much. Who knows, you might actually have a proper adventure with actual tension instead of a dick measuring contest between gm and players.
>>
>>50941772
Yeah that's true, maybe I'll just do something simple for his personal reward like a plus 1 sword that is flavored to like a Hawaiian shark tooth sword but velociraptor teeth. Wait... I think I found and improvement to Sharpshooter+GWM improvised longbow meme build...

> Ethereal Weapon (1)
> As a bonus action, you can momentarily transform a weapon you hold into psionic energy. The next attack you make with this weapon requires no attack roll. Instead, the target must make a Dexterity saving throw against this discipline. On a failed save, the target takes the attack’s normal damage and suffers any additional effects. On a successful save, the target takes half damage from the attack, but suffers no additional effects that would normally be imposed on a hit.

This mean -10 to attacks doesn't matter, but you still get +20 to damage right?

They're new. They made decisions that seemed rational at the time without the context we have. When they read that 10 is an average Con score and is neither good nor bad, they believed it. When they looked at their spell lists, they assumed that every spell was a viable choice. They didn't know, nor could they have known, that some choices were secretly mandatory while others were secretly traps.

5e doesn't have as much ivory tower game design as previous editions, but it definitely still has some, if only by accident. A lot of options are presented as equivalent, and you can only learn from experience that they're not.

And if you want a high AC build then a Dex based lvl 20 barbarian with max Dex/Con has 22 AC, with the mariner fighting style +2 AC when not wearing armour, can use a shield for +1 AC and after taking the magic initate feat can gain access to the shield spell +5 AC on reaction

So it caps at 30 AC.

The real answer is no. Methods of calculating AC never stack with each other.

I just want a succubus.

New question: For the Pact of the Blade, if I make a magic weapon my pact weapon, can I use my feature to transform that weapon? Say I get a +1 longsword, can I turn it into a +1 halberd?

If you like playing fun, unexpected race/class combos, that's great. If you like optimizing, that's not so great, but you're certainly allowed to do it. If you want to do both at the same time, I'm sorry to tell you that those are not compatible goals.

Essentially what I'm going for. I like my fluff and my mechanics to have some cohesion. Like the Lizardfolk: The guy gets +con and +wis, then has an ability that scales off str and an ability that scales off dex. He's MAD before he even gets a class. But, I think if I make him a Ranger, I can make use of all four of those stats.

Barbs don't get fighting styles

Well still 28 AC is nothing to sneeze at.

If your DM is nice

AC23 if you're not using Shield that round. You only get it once a day, so that's most of the time.

The Bladesinger is the king of AC at the moment if you can max your stats. INT and DEX to AC with light armour gets you to AC22, +1 if you spend a level on Fighter to get defensive fighting (not Mariner, because you're wearing light armour), +1 if you get that one TWF feat, and +5 every round if you get to Wizard level 18 and gain the ability to cast Shield as many times as you like a day.

AC 29 all day long, unless you want to spend your Reaction on something else.

They don't actually live there. No one lives there. I think the vampire has free reign.

Conversely if the house was inhabited he wouldn't be able to enter even if no one was home at the time.

Even if your DM is nice, the form the weapon can take should be limited by the form that kind of magic item usually comes in. So a simple +1 melee weapon could become any melee weapon, but a vorpal blade could still only be a sword that does slashing damage.

I haven't played CoS but I thought a plot point in it was that players can hide in buildings for the night and Strahd will try to trick them into inviting him in? So it wouldn't have to be literally your house, just one you're occupying?

Its dumb and unusable in a serious, low level campaign. If you want to do high level shenanigans I can think of no better alternative than a Dragon Ogre.
