One thing I would like to experience if fleeing from a vastly superior army. Has anybody done anything like that? Barely half a day's march ahead of the vanguard of an army?

The party able only to fight sporadically, outriders and such, before moving on, playing on fatigue, supplies, fighting, rest and all that stuff.

One of my favorites is discovering a hastily abandoned camp that appears like the party scared off some poachers.

What they actually scared off is up to you, but it's a great foreboding introduction to something bigger in the woods.
