blood bowl newbie here. started with a chaos team recently.
I read that Pile On is essentially out of the game, but someone also said that the rules for Claw changed.
I cannot find a reference to the latter. Can someone explain it to me what changed, and how it is played now?

Pile On is in something of a gray area, because it's listed as an optional rule. Whether it's "out of the game" or not is up to you, your opponents, and most importantly, your League organizer.

Claws remains the same. Originally, the ruling was "When an opponent is knocked down by a player with Claws during a block, any Armor roll of 8 or more after modifiers automatically penetrates the opponent's armor."
In the printing of the new Death Zone book, this was changed to "-before modifiers-", but a later Errata changed it to "-after modifiers-", as it was originally.

New player here: I want to run an agility team for passing shenanigans as the more bashy or middle of the road teams who just form cages and walk the ball up the pitch don't seem that exciting to me. How do the different elf teams compare to each other?

Dark Elves: These are the hardest hitting of the Elves. They are have 4 Blitzers open to them which none of the other have. The assassin is very niche and not that good. Runner is meh, but many people take it for fun. Witches are the most interesting piece, having natural Frenzy making them useful ball hunters. The team is more about running though, as they lack higher MA players.

High Elves: The other AV8 Elf team. 2 standard Blitzers, good starting Throwers, and SPP Hog Catchers. Their strength is having somewhat cheaper players than the 2 other elf teams while still focusing on a passing game unlike Dark Elves.

Pro Elves: Catchers. The Catchers are the lifeblood of this team. NoS along with MA8 makes them a very potent team and very hard to stop from scoring if they want to. Blitzers starting with Sidestep also gives you very good players with just one level for Block, Dodge, and Sidestep.

Wood Elves: Wardancers are the 2 best players on your team. They are without a doubt the best starting players out of every team. And the other team knows this. The Catchers probably aren't worth it, but they can work. Tree can sometimes work against the right teams, but usually just stands in a place denying people from going in those 9 squares. The trick here is making sure your team is still playable when your Dancers are fouled into death.

Also maybe look into Skaven. They focus more on running but are the main other not bash team that aren't Elves.

I've just recently started playing Blood Bowl, and I'm currently working on making a Necromantic team read as: getting a feel of the team on BB2 while trying to figure out how to model the players, since I'm most likely going to wait months, if not years, for GW to make the models for that team.
I'm currently thinking of using heavily green-stuffed Ghoul Kings for Werewolves and to modify the human models from the box to make the zombies (since their BB stats are much better than the naked retards that they are in WHFB). Do you think it could work?
I was reading online some basic tactics, when I noticed that the Piling On skill, that is often included as a nasty combo with Claws and Mighty Blow, isn't actually included in the Death Zone supplement
Am I the one that needs glasses (or maybe it's just that for some reason they changed the name, maybe just in my country) or has the skill really been removed?

My gaming club's RL league just finished after 5 months of play. Nobody ended up flaking and no games had to be conceded. We played Round Robin (3 rounds) for the season:

1st: Undead (me)
Also 1st: Nurgle
3rd: Chaos Dwarves
4th: Amazons
5th: Ogres (no surprise here)

Top 4 moved to the Cup tournament, single-elim, random seeding. I got lucky and drew the Amazon team. The coach really advanced their skills throughout the season and made me really work for the win (3-2). The Chaos Dwarf team ends up beating Nurgle in overtime and our game is a grueling fight for the ball through both halves until he finally breaks away and scores with a Bull Centaur on turn 13. A missed catch (and reroll) on my Blodge Sidestep ghoul sees the ball go out of bounds and into the hands of a hobgoblin on the other side of the pitch and I don't recover the ball until turn 16. A 3+ Sure hands pick-up fails twice despite my waiting ghoul being in position to score and that's the game (and the trophy).

What's a good starting roster for Vampires? I've been using 4 vamps / 7 thralls / 4 re-rolls and having really mixed results. Sometimes my vamps are able to dodge/punch/hypnotise their way to victory, other times all my thralls get blocked to death (or devoured when all my vamps inevitably wig out at the most inopportune moment imaginable) and my opponent can just wait for my whole team to collapse in on itself. Is this par for the course or should I think about dropping a vamp in order to have more walking blood bags available? Is starting with an apothecary (either to protect a vamp or to keep a thrall on the pitch for biting purposes) advisable?

3 vamps 9 thralls and 4 rerolls is nice. could even take 2 vamps and have 3 reserves. having less bloodlust to deal with is nice before you have pro. starting with the apo is a waste imo since your vamps have regen anyway, and if regen fails and one dies you can just start over since the team's new anyway.

They rely on decent rolls way more than punchy teams, but you can also do way more with them.

They're absolutely both of those things, but given their low armor and the high cost of their players, elf teams are prone to entering what's called a "death spiral".

A valuable player or two is killed or even just seriously injured, and you don't have the cash on hand to replace them. You get free journeymen, so it's not like you're playing down players, but you're decidedly handicapped for your next match, and it leaves you with more dead or seriously injured players. Your team's development is now in freefall, as you keep losing expensive players you can't replace because you keep losing games.

Avoiding it is mostly a matter of protecting those players during the matches, and remembering that your linemen don't matter despite costing nearly twice that of other teams. And also not rolling 1s.

They don't pass play as much, but can absolutely do it, they're just a very safe team, but suffer from some sub-optimal positionals and still have the same death spiral problem if even av8 doesn't hold up. Their linemen are also less expendable because they like to have more of them with a good amount of development than other elf teams (because what else are they going to hire, Assassins?).

Most teams are kind of a one and done thing. Not especially expandable. GW seems to intend to introduce new Star Players on a regular basis and have that be their method of selling new product to those who already own the team(s) they want. Worst case scenario though, we return to the state of things pre-2016 edition, which simply means buying third parties who will continue to support the game.

So all in all, if you bought a team and the next day GW said "fuck it we're done ", you'll be fine. What's more important is maintaining your community of players, as the rules won't go anywhere and you can still acquire models for teams easily.
