It depends entirely on what your local MtG scene is, and what you enjoy playing.

Myself personally; the town I live in used to have alternating Friday night Standard and Modern tournaments, and a large number of Commander players. Now, I personally enjoy Commander a lot more than the other two, but had a standard deck for friday night gaming.

Have you checked out any of the local shops to see what tournaments there are, or what people play locally?

Because if people play Standard in your area, and that's what you like, then that will narrow down your options. Likewise Modern will do the same, but in a different way.

Khans of tarkir is good value with the least variation in its return. You could play one of the assorted lottery sets, but chances of making back your money are slim. Fetches are about as close as you are going to get to a guaranteed return.

Plus khans was one of the best draft formats in recent memory (there I said it) if you have some friends to draft with.

you seem casual as fuck, just go on craigslist and buy a "lot" for like $20. The cards will be worthless but it doesn't matter if you're just playing for fun.
