Found the one thing in The Bone Zone that was actually relevant.
How do you make skeletal characters stand out, assuming you don't stylize them to a degree where their skulls are mostly just cartoony shapes? Skeletons are very uniform in design.

If you're talking about physical character design, a lot can be said by posture; sympathetic/sad characters often have their heads slightly lowered, while proud characters have their heads raised. Have their general motif - happy, sad, etc - shown through their stance.
If you're talking about the character's emotional design, I'm going to borrow DS' explanation of sane undead and say that their purpose is what defines them. Why did they rise, if it was by their own hand? Or if it was by another's, are they still their thrall, or has this aforementioned purpose broke the command of their leader?
