As a class system? I'd do it as three base classes: Fighter, Rogue, Mage. Then expand on a common ruleset based on D&D alignment (not because I think it's good, but because we can use it as an objective and codified rule set.) Each character starts at Neutral, and based on their actions in game qualify for various expanded classes. For example:

Neutral Fighter > Good Champion (like local hero, folk hero, etc.) > Lawful Good Paladin.

Or

Neutral Fighter > Lawful Guardsmen > Lawful Evil Blackguard

And so on and so forth. Some classes overlap from base classes, but probably not many.

Looks like it isn't fantasy, more like low fantasy. Note how the third row is Scholar with Diplomat and Merchant offshoots. This seems to take place under the assumption that magic isn't a factor, as all octopi in the pic are otherwise mundane.

Ah, I didn't actually read the labels on the bottom, I just assumed. The classes can change, so that's not an issue. Any of the names can change.

Considering how often the Rogue class gets used to represent every single non-warrior/mage concept, I'm surprised D&D has always shied away from a scholar/expert class that does more buffs/combat support than sneak attacks.

Like a Bard without spellcasting.
