How is that surprising? It's the default setting for 5e, promoted heavily and has a lot of support. If people are going to go for an official setting in 5e, it's going to be FR most of the time.

Isn't FR also the default setting for 5e's Adventure League? Organized play has been getting more and more popular with a lot of systems, and saying most people who play D&D are playing in Forgotten Realms is like saying people who play Pathfinder Society are playing in Golarion, even though it's not by choice so to speak.
