THE ANGELS SCORNED

This is an official Inquisitorial document, written by Karl Moritov, Ordo Hereticus, to aid any colleagues who may find themselves dealing with this particular
chapter of Astartes. As such, this document will be available on a need-to-know basis, as requested by the Scorned. Though obviously vague, this is in
accordance with the preferences of these Astartes for reasons that will become obvious.

OVERVIEW:

The Angels Scorned are an extremely mysterious Astartes chapter. Completely absent from the Index Astartes and using wargear that has not been in common production for millennia,
it is unclear if they are even known by their originators, the Dark Angels.
If they are, it must be brought into question why the Scorned are so reluctant to have any contact whatsoever with their fore-bearers. In all engagements in which the Scorned and
Inquisitorial forces have been present together, they have always done everything possible to wipe any trace of their presence from the area, calling upon the debt owed to them by
the Holy Orders of the Inquisition to ensure that the record never reveals their deeds to the greater Imperium.
>>
Whatever the case, the Scorned are known to us by one thing: that they are willing, even happy, to deal with the Inquisition at all. As is well known, Inquisitors that attempt to dig too far into the past of many
chapters descendant from the Dark Angels quickly find their way blocked (and we are all aware of the rumors that the sons of the Lion are willing to go even further to "dissuade" us in this) and this, combined with the
aforementioned avoidance of everything related to their sibling chapters, leads one to believe that there has been a falling out. What could cause such a schism between the Scorned and the greater descendants of the First Legion
is unknown, and every attempt to find out via our friends in the chapter have been met with polite yet firm requests to cease the discussion. As we do not wish to risk our relationship with them, I do not believe we should
push the issue. As per their request, we have not and likely never will mention their existence to any other chapter or Imperial Organization without their permission.
>>
Another aspect of the Scorned, and one with rather more direct involvement of the Inquisition, is the company the Chapter keeps. When the Scorned first came to us asking to collect on a part of the (immense and likely never truly repayable)
debt we owe them, it was for something curious: they asked for over one hundred sets of power armor, with bolt and power weapons to accompany them. What was unusual was that these were not for Astartes; they requested them in normal
human proportion. It was later revealed that the Angels Scorned count among their number an entire host of Crusaders, descendants of a Crusader Brotherhood rescued from some far off battlefield hundreds of years ago. It is likely that
the existence of this extra combat force is the reason the Angels seem to be perpetually under-strength at approximately 600 Astartes.
These men are considered part of the Chapter and go into combat with them, though have their own separate chain of command that is closely intertwined with that of the Astartes. Indeed, the Lord Commander of these Crusaders is counted among the major advisers of the
Lord of the Watch and their word carries great weight. As these Crusaders are operating under the authority of the Astartes and not the Ecclesiarchy, they have been deemed to not be in violation of the Decree Passive despite having numbers
that would find most other Crusaders Brotherhoods dispersed immediately. Despite this, the Scorned are happy to allow for Inquisitorial oversight on occasion, allowing us to ensure that the Crusaders are not acting in a way that
would require reprisal, though prefer to have us come and go as quickly as possible.
>>
It is also theorized by some that there is any issue regarding the geneseed of the Scorned. As they are not on the Index Astartes, or any other official record, they do not send a tithe of geneseed to Terra and so it is not analyzed.
While it is known that their geneseed is not corrupted, very little else is. The only reported times that the Scorned have become anything approaching hostile towards the Inquisition are when questioned about this. The only available information is that
the Angels state that it is not of the Calibanite fore-bearers of most First Legion successors. This heavily implies that it is Terran, and thus descendant of the legion that existed prior to Lord El-Jonson, the Angels Scorned have stated
that any further inquiry into this matter will not end well for us. Dropping the line of discussions seems, thus far, to be our best bet.

The homeworld of the Scorned, Oblitus, lies on the Eastern edge of the galaxy, quite far above the galactic plane. It is quite a distance from almost all major Imperial installations, though patrol fleets from Ultramar have been known to move
nearby on occasion. Despite this, there have been no mentions or admissions from Macragge in regards to the Scorned. When unofficially questioned by an Inquisitorial Representative on the existence of any non-Ultramarine descendant Astartes
in the area (strangely, on request from the Scorned themselves) the Ultramarines declined to comment. The Scorned seemed quite pleased at this news. From this we can assume that if the Ultramarines have any knowledge of the Angels Scorned'
past, they aren't going to be conductive in discussing it.
>>
In conclusion, the Angels Scorned are a chapter that wishes to keep their secrets. Indeed, it seems that they wish to keep themselves a secret. Despite this, there is no evidence that there is any heretical activity going on involving them,
and they have been of great service to us on more than one occasion. As such, I do not believe that there is any need for an investigation into the Scorned. To me, it seems, they simply want to be left alone.

M,

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I may be part of the Ordo Xenos, but this Dark Angel business concerns me as well. I've a Dark Angel in a kill-team assigned to me on a semi-permanent basis, and his secrecy never ceases to amaze. As many successor Chapters as the Dark Angels have produced, I would be surprised if the Angels Scorned are the only example of a schism between progenitor and progeny. I'm certainly aware of such a divide between the Ultramarines and one of their successor chapters. I will keep an ear to the ground for others, in exchange for updates on this one.

Thank you.

When it comes to the more...shall we say obtuse? Astartes, it is better to follow caution than initial cynicism.

A question remains, however: shall the Scorned be considered part of the Dark Angels "mysterious" host? Are we to consider them one and the same, as we have so other descendant chapters?

As such, I assume we should question the wisdom of the Scorned themselves. To incur the attention of outsiders is to incur their wrath, I believe.

I wonder. These Dark Angels obviously have something to hide, and what you don't know will most certainly kill you. Seek the enemy of your enemy, and you will find a friend.

The enemy of my enemy is my enemies enemy, nothing more, nothing less.

Do not pry into the affairs of first founding chapters, you will find them jealous and hostile for their secrets.

How many do these baseline auxiliaries represent? Such an extra-proscroved force may constitute a breach of the Pax Legionnes and the separation of powers set down by the Codex Astarte's by Gulliman following the Heresy.

Your report states they favour shock and awe, and that they make use of "preferred equipment and tactics", but nothing of them in battle is described. Are the codex adherent? Assault specialists? Do they paint dingleberries on their brow and run screaming into the heretics ranks naked, laying about with their tallywhackers? What, by Celestine's crinkled teat do they DO? Surely someone has an action report given how frequently they supposedly work alongside our various Ordos. Shall I be calling on them to burn down cities, or wash cathedral windows?

Their reticence to even appear in the same theatre of their parent chapter suggests some sort of schism, which is unusual for the typically clannish Dark Angels and their successors.

Some sort of political divide? Astarte's can be remarkably tribal in behavior, and are given to factionalization in the older chapters.
>>

I have found another Dark Angels successor that split over "philosophical differences" with their progenitors. They're still utterly silent about WHY the split happened, it appears secrets are in their damn gene-seed. I suspect a particular series of events caused the divide, as cutting contact with the Dark Angels coincided with changing the name of their chapter. It's possible a similar scenario occurred with the Angels Scorned.
