Pathfinder General /pfg/

Which is your favorite new super-sugoi 1pp prestige class? Is it back to the old arcanist/psion/psychic/sorcerer/witch/wizard + Evangelist with Prestigious Spellcaster?

>THIS IS IMPORTANT!
If you want build advice make sure to say what 3pp you can use, if any.

Looking forward to seeing what all this book has to offer. Not sure about this class, depends on what the Eldest grant.
>>
Is there a way to tastefully kill of a characters family in a backstory?
>>
>>50700898
Have them die of illness or childbirth. No chance of foul play because of those things, and they actually were pretty common in those times that Fantasy games are meant to represent.
>>
>>50700898
Illness, childhood, old age, accidents. Something that doesn't stand out much, and something your character isn't massively hung up over.

Just present it as a thing that happened, as a fact of life.
>>
>>50700898
War if they live in the country side. If they live in a fortified city? Plague.
>>
New rule: Your character's max level is equal to their number of living parents, siblings, or children
>>
>>50700898
Use it to present a plot hook that helps tie you to the world, or to the campaign as you know it. Either a distinctive creature/villain killed them, an organization that figures into the area the campaign will take place in, or the culprit was someone involved with a major antagonist the GM has already told you about (Gaedren Lamm in Curse of the Crimson Throne, for example).

What are the best Paizo-only classes starting at level one? Gestalt game, GM didn't want anything third-party.
>>
>>50701038

Another example is like, the three characters in Rise of the Jade Regent who've got dead people from the fire.

Oradin - that is, the Oracle and Paladin, is the greatest 1pp gestalt combination out there, easily rivaling the stronger 3pp builds possible.
>>
>>50701028
Do half siblings count?
If they do, does sibling child count as one or two levels?
>>
>>50701028
>children
It's time to stop.
>>
>>50701086
From level one? I dunno. GM's pacing is a little slow, I don't think we'll be leveling up much at all. I'm looking for something that will work from the word 'go' and not something that'll be good five-ten levels from now.

So here are few deaths that happen in some of my character's backstories:
>brother died while off to war
>mother died in childbirth
>father died of strangle cough
>mother died by being kicked in the head by a horse
>sister died when she was young and got sick from something unknown
>father died by getting shanked in bar room brawl, killer was hanged a month later
>strangled father to death
>brother disappeared, found later having broken his leg after falling down small chasm, dies of exposure
>sister spontaneously combusted
>brother joined gang, died in gang violence during teenage years
>mother died in large fire
>father dies of alcohol poisoning
>brother died of syphilis

If it was not clear these are different characters.
>>
>>50701065
Who would those be? Also isn't that bad since that's tehcnically using meta knowledge, granted Rise of the Runelords is by far the most common AP so it would be hard to not be a little spoiled on it.
>>
>>50701137
Trust me. GM likes to do it slow. We're talking level 3 after... three months or so.
>>

character's current family:

>Andes Harparr, Father

>Sane Harparr, Younger Sister

>Rewilh Harparr, Uncle

>Yellis Harparr, Aunt
>Mickel Harparr, Cousin

>Ullis Belmont, First Cousin Once Removed
>Ivar Belmont, Second Cousin

Maybe that's fun for you guys, but level 1 and 2 are absolute garbage, and even my level 1 start-happy GM makes sure we're never there for long. Shit can slow down to a crawl after that.

Oh, and it's not *really* meta-knowledge since the Late Unpleasantness is common knowledge, including the great fire that took out the church and half the town.

Were we talking only people who had relatives die in the fire, or people who had someone die in the fire as part of their backstory? I could have sworn we had more than those three, if it's the latter.

How's this
>Dad is in foreign land
>Meets woman
>Woman is married to another man
>Shit happens, Dad helps entire family escape bullshit
>he settle into the same city they do
>Has his own family, PC is born but mom dies in child birth. Dad is bitter, but not abusive. Just kind of emotionally neglectful.
>Dad notices PC get's along with Woman's daughter, starts to live vicariously through the PC. The bond but he subtly feeds PC his own bitterness and hangups.
>Woman dies. Dad commits suicide/dies in an accidenthe faked his death and fucked off to try to find a way to have her resurrected, he eventually goes nuts and is implied to have become a serial killer/started working with BBEG

That sounded a lot cooler in my head.

Han Solo's an orphan. So Jin is, too. Who wants to his Wookie buddy?
>>
>>50701211
It's not fun at all for me though. One time I made a soracle and it was a hellish mistake which is why I've come to you guys for advice so I don't mess up again.

Anyone got suggestions besides Oradin? Seems like a good combo, but I figure I should keep my options open a little. At least a wis and int counterpart. I was thinking of Druid or Cleric/Monk for wis. Maybe Wizard/Fighter for Int? It's gotta be something that can take off from level one.
>>
>>50701274

i'd have to go check for sure, but I know Gil mentioned it. I think the person in question in that instance may have been Nualia, but fuck if I know. One anon was claiming that guy was awakened by a magic sword, so it may have just been some tinfoil hat bullshit.
>>
>>50701327
Honestly I can nix that bit. The real point is that I want to emphasis my characters dad/mentor filled his head with some unhealthy ideas, not out of malice but because he was a messed up guy.
>>
>>50701376
>not out of malice but because he was a messed up guy.

I wouldn't say he's *that* messed up, he sounds incredibly human; he met the girl of his dreams and she was fucking another man - a healthy, well-mannered man that wasn't treating her wrong, and filling her with babies in plain view of him in the same city.

That's enough to give anyone some hang-ups, and even if he could push that all down to the subconscious, well, it's all going to come bubbling back up when one of his own starts dating that girl's daughter.
>>
>>50701421
> it's all going to come bubbling back up when one of his own starts dating that girl's daughter.
They really weren't dating, just playing together as children. They were just friends, though the PC did have a crush on her though.

I'm of the opinion that if you change a dragon's nature, it oughta get a severe downgrade--after all, they're born already entrenched in their nature and as mentally developed as an average human. If you tried to give one greater free will, he'd probably be born as smart as a human baby.

Monster Harvesting:
When you slay a creature, you may opt to havest it's body for materials. After spending one minute uninnterrupted minute carving up the body of a creature you've slain, you get a colection of useful monster parts equal to 1/4th of XP reward of that creature in gold. You can use this as credit for any craft, however when used for Magical gear, the type/subtype of the monster parts used may alter the effects of the enchantment given at the GM's Discretion. There's a distinct lack of fae races in PF in general outside of elves, drows and halflings.

Even DSP's Fae Book has a distinct lack of fae like most of the Tuathe De Danan.

Look at all the fae races in myth that would fit a playable race.
Changelings, Pixies, Nymphs, Satyrs, Dullahans, Spriggans, Kolobok (inspiration for the muffin man and the gingerbread man, and arguably Pinocchio) several Yosei (Japanese fairies like the Koborokuru (Japanese Lilliputians) Mujina (badger people), Tanuki (raccoon dog people), Nekomata & Bakeneko (cat people) and Inugami (dog people) are all considered Fey.

The bigger question is, if you truly believe what you just said, why do you stick around here to complain about nothing happening when you can just ignore the generals and drop in whenever you want to talk about something, instead?

It was never this bad because the game was still alive at that point. Pathfinder is a dying game. It's only propped up by semi-decent 3pp and the monthly Paizo bloat we get. Why do you think Starfinder is coming out soon? Paizo knows their game is dying and are trying to set something else up before it's all gone.

>>50703400
Look at the Japanese TTRPG general. They are rarely on the board for more than two subsequent threads, if that. Just because there are people who want a general doesn't mean there's actually enough discussion to keep one up at all times.

There's an exclusive and expensive mausoleum in Kerse called the Golden Ossuary. Once a year the Resplendent Bureaucracy holds a raffle allowing a group of explorers 24 hours to raid the tomb and take out anything they can carry. Between the number of entrants and the chance of a team not coming out the Kalistocrats make a tremendous profit, but the riches within tempts treasure hunters every year.

Aqua is genuinely *a bad person*, and an enabler as well. She's exceedingly selfish, her int capped out at level 1, she causes a lot of trouble. The relationship they've attained by this point is probably the limit.

fuck, Eris shows up onstage and EVERYONE realizes they're staring at the f***ing goddess, while Aqua's own Axis Cult (and consider the connotations of that name in japan) is pretty iffy about Aqua even when she directly claims her divinity and shows them a few miracles

Don't *try* to roleplay. Just put yourself in the character's shoes and let your thoughts flow from their little biases, their anecdotes, their upbringing... those shape how you talk and respond.

Oh but you're not wrong about the system. Pathfinder isn't a GOOD system at all, we're just all kinda stuck with it because everyone else we know mostly plays it because everyone else they know.... you get the idea.

There are many other game systems out there though, and you'll surely find something actually enjoyable.

Their attention to trade is the main reason. Andoran has the Lumber Consortium, but as a whole they're more focused on the people than wealth. Molthune is too busy fighting Nirmathas, and Kyonin, well, they're too busy being filthy elves. Their wealth isn't because they negotiated with the dwarves, they negotiated with the dwarves because they want to be wealthy. They're often called a bureaucracy, hell, that's what they call themselves, but Druman ambition is a major driving force in getting shit done.

Half-Orc rogue from an oasis city that is feeling a bit lost in a kingdom that hates him, finds some solace in working with the targeted PC.

Human Cavalier that is basically a glorified bounty hunter looking to clear his name.

Human Warder that doesn't give a shit about all this political stuff if it doesn't benefit the north.

Human Eldritch Guardian that is rather slow mentally and is out to avenge his childhood best friend, follows the party because they keep him from getting himself killed.

Half-Elf Divine Marksman that is out for adventure and finds city life strange and confusing.

Human Gunslinger that is out to explore the world and hunt down the guy who killed his brother.

Basically, the party gravitates around the targeted PC because of the opportunities his station as a noble have given them and he tends to pay them for their assistance.

hm.....
okay. Have you ever commented "yeah, that asshole would totally do/say that" about someone? Roleplaying is basically an extension of that.

When you roll up/write up a character, you're choosing where they're from, what their stats are.... you literally get to attribute how intelligent they are, how wise they are, and how silver-tongued-devil or raging-assburger-shithead their communication skills and general countenance they are!

Even shit like class abilities can alter someone's world view. Take someone who lives and breathes magic for example. When shit like that is a core part of WHAT you are, it can also be part of WHO you are. It taints what "normal" is to you.

So take those items, and combine them.
>He's from a devil worshiping country which doesn't so much "want to sacrifice to teh evils" but really admires their ability to keep the trains running on time

>your agility but low resilience mean you're damn good with a deck of cards, but have long since learned that once the guy you're scamming knows what you've done, you're going to the fucking hospital if you're not already well and gone.
>hey you know who's fucking ASSHOLES to your entire family? Ustalav. Fuck everyone from there
>your resistance only makes my dick harder

When you put all this shit together, it becomes suddenly very clear how your character might see the situation.
>This asshole from ustlav seems suspicious as all fuck. Maybe it's because he's a fucking ust slav. Fuck those guys. Imma rip some thoughts out of his head, I bet you it's all bad.

Example. I've got a character who was more or less raised in one of the higher tech sections of Golarion. Pretty much living out a crashed-star-trek level ship. This means everything he's ever known can often be quite different from the remainder of the party.

Like, what does he KNOW? He knows tech. Problems? There's tech for that. Shit we don't know? Check the computers. This is what's normal to him. This is what he thinks.

I mean think about it. If YOU are going for a hike through deepass woods, you'll probably want to take a GPS, maybe an oldschool compass, a survival knife, maybe some flares in case of an emergency... This is shit you think about, right?

But that dude over there. He's a knight. Like, oldschool. You know what he's taking? some asshole skinned a sheep and drew a map on it that's not even precise to the KILOMETER. His rations are a bag of motherfucking potatoes. And he tells you he don't got GPS.

Stupid question time: Explain unarmed attacks to me.
If someone were to make an unarmed attack, do they get two attacks-one for each hand-as if they were dual wielding, or do they only get extra attacks from things like high BAB or a monk's flurry.

On a related note, are the claws gained from various bloodlines strictly better than a monk's unarmed strike because it gives two attacks?

The ongoing campaign I was running just ended tonight, so I figured I'd share the highlight reels with you guys:

>When the illuminati decide to "clean" the operation you've been sent to investigate by sending a shark mouth bandana masked halfling to kill everyone who knew anything.
>When you're the firstborn son of a Noodle Baron and disappoint the family by going into private investigations after your partner in the City Polic was killed by the Mafia, and your erratic behavior got you fired.
>When your GM hides clues to unmask the conspiracy that killed your character's family in the minutiae of a painstakingly detailed book of accounts.
>When the conspiracy attacks your normal place of work by binding the souls of the most savage and brutal mercenaries of recent years to a few dozen hobos before bulking them out on mutagen and sending them to slaughter your boss' corporate security.
>When you're the head of that corporate security and get killed in the firefight, but are valuable enough to the biomedical company that employs you for them to just clone up another version of you.
>When the assassins that broke into your penthouse dive off the 144th floor, using Immovable Rods like a trapeze to build distance and fling themselves away.
>When the cleaner halfling shows back up with her boss' terms for a cease fire, but kills the corporate security guy, again, because he made fun of her height.
>When you infiltrate a floating opera house during a famous cellist's performance because the cellist is running a slaving ring out of the level beneath the dressing rooms, and a young man who sold himself into slavery is the only living person who's seen the ringleader meet with his fellow conspirators.
>When the conspiracy's ringleader turns out to be the mid-level government bureaucrat, an old dwarf who always had a helpful word of advice whenever the party needed to collect tax records or public information of people they were investigating.

>When the terrifying cleaner halfling ninja turns out to be his unassuming, girlish wife.
>When you don't have enough evidence to charge him with anything despite all the lies and corruption you've uncovered, and he goes on vacation to his stronghold, the Town of Tomorrow.
>When the Town of Tomorrow is a peaceful utopia where men and women of all species and backgrounds get along with one another, and the orcs are green and vaguely chavvish instead of horrifying slimey cannibals made out of teeth and gnashing maws.
>When you sit down with him in his place of power and his wife pours you a cup of unpoisoned tea, and he explains his vision for a brighter future.
>When you're almost sold on the deal, but the homeless malcontent sitting at the corner wearing a tinfoil hat grabs the hem of your coat and babbles incoherently about everything you see and smell being a lie.
>When it turns out that the Town of Tomorrow is nothing more than the lucid dream of every victim the Illuminati "disappeared" over the past decade, made manifest on the material plane through the nexus of a powerful psychic.
>When the powerful psychic is the young girl that the private investigator had been looking into the kidnapping of when the party came together to bust the first operation.
>When the only reason the Town of Tomorrow exists is to cover the area with psychic noise masking the Ringleader's forbidden ritual from the Watchers of the Wall.
>When the Ringleader intends to bore into core of planar space, intent on harnessing the powers of the Theoretical Plane of Negative Energy, not know that all reality was forged as a prison for the black dragon Ahriman.
>When you fail to stop his ritual and the wings of the black dragon begin to unfurl, shrouding the town in a grim, glowing darkness that slowly drains the life energies of all living beings caught within its shroud.

>When the Ringleader gets killed by his own hubris, consumed by the negative energy and rendered into a shade, and you find yourself battling his wife over the fate of the psychic girl.
>When she wants to kill the psychic, let the Watchers in before Ahriman fully manifests in the material plane, and all is lost.
>When most of the party thinks there's a better way, but the dickass noble agrees with the bloodthirsty assassin who killed his family in his backstory.
>When the investigator and the gunmage realize that the homeless man's tinfoil hat blocked the effects of her psychic powers enough for him to get a glimpse at the real world around him.
>When you wrap the psychic's head in tinfoil, and the Town of Tomorrow melts from your vision, revealing fields of tubes holding men and women in stasis, dreaming as Ahriman's wings come into definition, and his head, the size of a mountain, begins to rise.
>When the Effervescent Keeper of the Entry Hall descends from its place in the Akashic Record, a gentle smile on its shapeless face, a key that is also a star in its hands.
>When it locks the door that the Ringleader opened, and offers you a boon for lifting the veil upon its eyes.
>When the dickass noble gets his family back, all he really wanted.
>When the gunmage gets his debts to mafia paid, washing his hands from the ciminal underground.
>When the rich playboy rearranges the board of directors of his father's - now his, with his father killed by his fellow Illuminati - with people more amenable to the direction he wants to take it.
>When the corporate security gets his cybernetic mods removed, so he can live without the maintenance his company provides him, and that terrible feeling in the morning that he's a cripple propped up on tin legs.
>When the private eye refuses the boon, even though he wants his partner back, believing that the past should be left unchanged.

How is this not a godlike obedience for anyone with Orator, or an empiricist?

It was honestly the most fun I've ever had GMing, especially when character interactions started going due to the way I connected everyone's backstories.

The Spellslinger Wizard, for instance, his bound gun once belonged to the private eye's partner, having switched hands from the idiot son of a Bratva leader about half a dozen time until it wound up with him. The PI was... not pleased when he found that out, which nearly led to some (mutually agreed on) PVP until the Rich Playboy managed to talk the PI down.

Corporate Security (a Slayer with a metric ton of cybermods we worked out to replace his starting WBL) also happened to be the clone of PI's partner. Originally, that line of clones was meant to be the vessels for the power the Ringleader planned on siphoning from the bore, as some "routine" medical tests they did on Police Officer's blood samples showed an interesting reaction to artificially created negative energy (he was a Dhampir), but the company that made him went rogue from the Illuminati (and thus the attack).

That was actually the real reason why the man was killed, because he refused to play ball when approached. The clones would have made an annoyingly powerful army for them.

Rich Playboy's dad was on the Illuminated Council, and for a while his character fell under post hypnotic suggestion that had him leading the party on goose chases (he was something of the leader).

Dickass Noble was the least connected, sadly, but the one with the most natural bone to pick with the Illuminati - they killed most of his family, and he had to ship his sister off to Martha the Conjurer to keep her safe.

(Martha the Conjurer being... well, basically an immortal NEET chick who secluded herself after her pretty boy husband died of old age in a tower affixed to a black hole hovering over the middle of a gulf off the Repulic's Coast, watching the various Material Planes. She sometimes takes apprentices.)
