Is it possible to play a Samurai without automatically being assumed to be a weeb?
>>
In L5R if you don't play a samurai something has gone very wrong.
>>
>>50697720
Depends on the setting.
Also depends on the group.
>>
>>50697720
Sure, just, you know, don't play with faggots from 4chan.
>>
>>50697720
Yes; playing a Samurai while not behaving like a fucking weeb.
>>
Remember they liked horses, archery and guns. Also that Bushido was invented after they were gone

How's L5R as a system?
>>
>>50697769
This very much so.

Bushido was invented near the turn of the century by a guy who learned English from a young age, and attended university in the United Stats. If I'm not mistaken, the actual book Bushido: The Soul of Japan was originally written and published in California, in English. The guy who wrote it wasn't even a historian.

You can do a lot of fun stuff with them. Like some animistic monster hunter/paladin who specializes on resisting curses, poison and other status-debilitating effects and explains that by his faith and warrior-status making him immune to suffering being spiritually tainted by bloodshed.

He'd be all like

I don't think you understand. If you're playing RPGs in the first place, I'm gonna assume you're a big ol' nerd, which includes weeb. You're a weeb until proven othewrise. You're also posting on an anime image board owned by a Japanese man, which doesn't exactly deduct weeb points.
>>
>>50697720
If anyone makes fun of you for playing a samurai, just RP it out. Cut off their head and put it on a pike, just like a samurai would!

Or you could not care what some idiot thinks
>>
>>50697720
First ask yourself if it: a) Fits the group, b) Fits the setting and c) Fits the campaign.

If you play with a group of immortal WWII veterans who were at the Pacific theater, don't. If you play on a hard sci-fi setting where the party is a group of asteroid miners, don't. If you're playing in ancient japan but the campaign is about the invasion of ryukyu and you're natives of modern Okinawa resisting the japanese invasion, don't unless you have a very good backstory and justification, or play as a Pechin which should be close enough.
>>
>>50697720

No.

If you're playing something from Japanese culture, and you aren't Japanese, then you're a weaboo. Simple as that.
>>
>>50697720

Only if you're asian. Otherwise no, you are automatically weeb.
>>
>>50697720
you can't, same as to wanting martials to be as good as casters, that's weeb by nature
>>
>>50697720
It's too late for that.

I would point out that weaboo refers to the ones who are obnoxious faggots about it. You can like japanese media and not be a weaboo as long as your not annoying with it. If you go on and on about how great japan is and how superior it is sure, but if you are just like "i like japan" that doesn't automatically make you a weaboo.

A samurai is just a Knight but with all the Japanese cultural shit attached
And like wanting to be a knight you should just play a Fighter with some noble rank who is loyal to the local political figurehead

Frankly the idea of D&D and it's derivatives making separate classes out of shit that should be core mechanics of the Base PH classes or that are just shit that should be flavorful fluff on a character sheet, but that's for another thread

Could work, but I'd kinda rather that was some sort of "variant style" a fighter could engage in, which would also cover things like being a rapier-and-dagger sort of swordsman. Similarly, you can still flavor a big brutish fighter with a two-handed saber as a heavily armored samurai with a nodachi.
>>
My longest played character is a samurai. And I love every minute of playing him. Personally as long as you play a character and not a caricature you're fine no matter what you play. But I also allow my players to play shit like sniper wizards, and other crazy shit. As long as they have a motivation and reason for existing beyond meta then im cool with pretty much anything.

No. You go balls to the wall.

You play an atheist from Earth who uses only the most euphoric logic when discussing anime with peopl or deciding what anime to wach or ranting about why Japan is obviously superior to the rest of the world. His logic is so euphoric and flawless that it captures the attention of the "God" of Logic and Reason from your campaign, who then decides to magically pull your tubby ass (and the Katana you were polishing at the time) from Earth in order to make you his Paladin to ward off the scourge of all things illogical. But you're to Euphoric too stoop to the "God"'s level, so you decide to make the best of your life in this new world by hiring yourself and your katana out as a Samurai. But Mr. "God" of Logic continues to try and court you into working for him throughout the campaign with promises of sushi pizza, physical 2d waifus, and a third season of Kill La Kill
>>
>>50697769
>>50698230
Funny enough, I play a samurai in a freeform RP who DOES use more than a katana... Ironically his katana is legitimately his most powerful weapon, but he's got a bad case of 'boys and their toys' and he ends up carrying him:

>A bow
>A rifle
>Two pistols
>A yari spear
>A naginata
>A kanabo
>His family sword
>short sword
>Two knives
>A jitte for when he doesn't want to kill someone

And, imaginably, with this load he's either on horseback or has his horse carrying it.

Probably a well known fact by now, but the role of Obi Wan Kenobi was originally written with Toshiro Mifune in mind.

That sort of equipment is acceptable if you have some sort of justification where your character is carrying it, and if you don't just magically have them appear in his hand at the start of battle.
There is a reason why swords were popular. You could just carry them by your side and then draw them at a moment's notice.

Depends on the group and how well you're known among them. Even people who shout weeb more than altrighters shout cuck won't assume you're a weeb if they've known you long enough to have formed different opinions.

If you're dealing with a new group, the best option would be to find a context where Samurai would be different from how their seen and stick to it. I played one who participated in the settings equivalent of an Ikko rebellion; he didn't believe in it so much as he wanted the relative autonomy the revolution promised. It didn't work out, hence him not being in notJapan.

Miyamoto Musashi recommends katana + wakizashi (or longsword and companion sword as my translation of book of five rings calls it.) when you're fighting indoors and/ or against multiple enemies. When you're outdoors, you should employ the spear. He hates the shit out of the naginata for some reason and he's not too big a fan of guns (I assume he prefers the higher firing rate, quiet nature, accuracy and environmental adaptability of the bow over the matchlock rifle), but he acknowledges they have some advantages.

Different times different standards. The book of five rings was written after the 100 year war/ sengoku jidai/ whatever, but I trust the buddhist piece of shit knew what he was talking about.

While he's a bit extreme, glaive style weapons do have a lot of disadvantages relative to the spear; in large combat, they are not made up for by the advantages. Single combat is more debatable, and ultimately a matter of personal taste.

>not too big a fan of guns

I believe his words were "In a siege, the gun is king". Less that he's not too big a fan of guns, and more that he considers them a situational weapon that shine during sieges or siege like battles.

>Thinking only the Moors used cavelry in Iberia.
>Iberian cavalry tactics involved knights approaching the enemy, throwing javelins, then withdrawing to a safe distance before commencing another assault. Once the enemy formation was sufficiently weakened, the knights charged with thrusting spears (lances did not arrive in Hispania until the 11th century).
>>
>>50698230
Depends on the era though, late edo it's perfectly viable to only have a daisho as your standard gear.

Some military or "police" units like the battotai were full sword-units too.
>>
>>50698230
>Also, katana are side-arms, not main weapons
In open battle and certain parts of a siege.

Indoors or with thick trees, Katana were preferred specifically because they weren't too long.
>>
>>50708223
Really depends on Era.
>>
>>50706048
Iirc, Mifune's accent was pretty thick, and I think the studios wanted someone "dignified" or something to shore up the film. It was one of those things where Mifune, for all his prestige from working on Kurosawa films, was still basically only someone that the art house crowd was going to be psyched for, while everyone else was going to be like "Wasn't he the guy in 'Hell in the Pacific'?"
Add to that the fact that Star Wars was already seen very much as a weird kid's movie that was probably doomed to failure, and you can see why they picked an esteemed British actor for the mentor role.
Which isn't to knock Alec Guiness, I think Obi Wan is one of the strongest parts of the series... but one does wonder what could have been...
>>
>>50708235
It doesn't really depend on era, outside of using a slightly different sword of the same length for earlier periods. Open field weapons were largely the same, different mostly in slight (if admittedly significant) details until the full westernization of Japan. The same applies for weapons not for open field. It doesn't matter if its the 1300's or the 1800's, a samurai wouldn't even think to bring a pike style Yari into an indoor fight because that's really fucking silly. All weapons are situational, this hard division of 'main' or 'sidearm' only works in the context of specific situations.
>>
>>50697720
I played a badger samurai one time.

I Just didntact like a furry or a weeb!
>>
>>50708291
Battles in late periods closer to Sekigahara, you would see more focus on guns and so on close engagements you would see more swords as they can function better in close combat then a rifle you also had things like the sword police and other such organizations.
>>
>>50708373
Late period Sengoku was effectively Pike&Shot. Not perfectly, but effectively. In that open field context, swords would have been a sidearm weapon; you can have a greater effect with a wall of pikes charging into a group of arquebusers than swordsmen, simply because its harder for the arquebusers to defend. Though I will grant that, as far as melee weapons go, arquebusers likely relied pretty heavily on the katana.

Also; there were probably no rifles in the Sengoku Jidai. Outside of a handful of novelty weapons too valuable to see heavy use, almost every firearm in that period was was smoothbore.
>>
>>50697720
Primarily, focus.

Focus focus focus.

Samurai are historical. There's sources on them, dozens if not hundreds if not thousands. Read these sources. Read them carefully and take in their details.

Now shape a character that is a person who incorporates those details which make him a Samurai. Disregard Hollywood or Weebanimation wherever they contradict those sources or where it's obvious they just cranked up certain aspects to up the pathos. Bam, you got yourself a Samurai who isn't weeb.

You, however, will be called a weeb, regardless, because Japanese culture in the west is carried primarily by delusional high-schoolers and american edutainment, so whenever you play with people not on equal footing such as yourself, they will associate you with people wearing Naruto headbands and polishing their Katana thrice a day.

So your best bet is to play a character where being a Samurai is basically irrelevant and where it's more important what kind of person they are. This should be your general approach for any character, by the way.
>>
>>50708458
Pretty sure the imported arms were rifles, also late period stuff should be rifled.

Very late period, to an extent. Imperial forces during the meiji revolution and much more so in the post revolution uprisings. However, while rifling was contemporary with the Sengoku, it was not common in Europe let alone with exported firearms.

See, the problem with blackpowder is that it would mess with the inside of the firearm, far more so than modern smokeless powder. This would mess with the rifling, though good care of the weapon could mitigate it enough if you kept a spare around for use in long engagements. Also, the majority of muzzle loaders had some give on how large their barrels were so that the gun could be loaded more quickly or with ammunition of improvised quality. This would have made rifling effectively useless.

Breechloaders were the only effective rifled blackpowder weapons, and Japan didn't have any breech loaders except the aforementioned novelty weapons.

Not anymore than playing a viking berserker makes you a norseboo

Just remember that in actual war, the gun, bow and polearm were go to traditional weapons of war for the Samurai, not the sword.

The Honorable Bushido type Samurai came into being long after the warring states. Those Samurai are very ill suited for war and most were little more than body guards or sword bearing bureaucrats.

Samurais were also VERY proud people, just like knights and believed heavily in a class based society. They dont take insults lightly, especially from people they deem lowly.

I'm running a mad max inspire post-apocalyptic game set in a cluster of small towns dominated by "clans" of heavily tattooed nutjob samurai descended from yakuza survivalists that fight with katana and sparkplug musket on carback, leaping onto enemy cars at max speed for boarding battles Japanese sengoku era style. The players are the retainers of a young lord, sworn to serve as his shotgunners and jumpers, boarding and slaying in his name.

So I dunno, you tell me.

The trick is playing the Samurai as a Samurai in character but not from his looks.
Be Honourable and Loyal. Have some Pgilosophy about your Blade and Killing (preferably a one which does not like the act of it), bear in mind that you too will die etc.
But Use a normal weapon like a Longsword or a Scimitar.
And above all else, be a person. Have flaws, for example don't be abstinent or straght to the bone. Samurai weren't either...

Yes. Don't use the samurai aesthetic (unless that's what you're there for). Consider the Man With No Name. He was a wandering duder with martial skill and a desire to help those he ran into. He'd occasionally hire himself out (or at least pretend to) to various lords of land and act in their benefits at the time. He was effectively a Ronin without the aesthetic.

If you want to play a samurai, play a character with all the traits that you consider important to being a samurai. Again, unless you're there for the aesthetic. And while I agree it's a gorgeous aesthetic, you'll probably be accused of being a weeb no matter what you do. Skin-deep admiration is always the largest trait of anything-aboos.

Musashi fought as a footman in the Sengoku Jidai.

He disliked naginata for the same reason that the yari took over, that a thrust of the spear is faster and more powerful than a slash with a glaive and with an edge on it you can do most of the cuts anyway.

The gun works if you've got time to reload, which you can't count on. He stresses that you should use whatever weapon has the longest range.

Dual wielding is primarily used when you have to face multiple opponents. You don't do it indoors like you said, instead you use your shortest sword so you've got room to attack and you try and force your opponents into taking a position that restricts their mobility, or trip them over a chair or whatever.

You might want to reread the book Anon.

But it does.

Don't play characters outside your own ethnic group (when the game is based on IRL ethnic groups). Play Mouse Guard or Gamma World? Doesn't matter. Play a character outside of your own culture and ethnic group makes you a _____boo by definition, because if you weren't obsessed with them you would want to play the character in the first place.

That does not sound like any of the books that I have read written by Samurai.

>>
>>50697720
Easily, just have a reason WHY your character is a samurai or equivlent.
For example: A Pathfinder character that I made once was a Tiefling samurai (made to look like an Oni) who was deathly loyal to the lord that saved her from the streets and treated her as an almost surrogate daughter. when she expressed a desire to repay him for his kindness, he helped train her to be a samurai in his service. after a coup left him dead and his heir missing, she was drugged and put aboard a cargo ship in order to keep her safe since she was one of a small number of people who had actually seen the heir prior to him being taken by another vassal, and thus one of a small number who could identify him. After some 47 ronin tier bullshit, most of the lord's living vassals where in hiding or had fled the nation. whole reason she had been sent from her homeland was PRECISELY because she didn't know anyone. Fewer enemies and lots of potential allies if she worked them right.
interesting characters with backgrounds that can be built off of are superior to "lol samurai cause I can"

Is Sake the only Japanese form of alcohol or did they have liquors and beers and such over there back in the day too?
>>
>>50717789
Sake is a specific type of rice wine; other forms were used including something which would be culturally comparable to beer if Sake is considered wine. Though, in general, any domestically produced Japanese alcohol was rice based; if it wasn't, it was imported. There just wasn't a good enough reason to switch out of rice production.
>>
>>50717905
Didn't they make like, plum wine and shit there? Or was that exclusively imported from China?
>>
>>50717950
Oh, no, you're right. I forgot about Umeshu. I think because, iirc, it wasn't historically consumed in enough quantities to get anything beyond a buzz if that; it was a social drink but you never drank much at once.

There are probably other small things like that I missed as well. Though sheer production numbers means that rice based alcohol effectively dwarfed the alternatives.
>>
>>50718073
>>50717905
>>50717789
You are also forgetting shochu for some reason. And beer since 1624. And no, umeshu is something you find in damn near every household because it's easy as piss to make and generally good shit to drink. You just steep plums in shochu and sugar for several months.

Because one is a sweet, tart fruit wine by taste while the other is fifty proof distilled liquor. Though shochu also comes is all the varieties of the rainbow. The sweet potato is fucking rad, I've always wanted but never been able to find the chestnut, the milk is top comfy, the barley is basically whiskey, and the rice will make you want to kill yourself. I'll drink it, but that shit is just unpleasant. Awamori's a bit better, but still. There's no reason not to toss some plums and sugar is a jug of that shit, let it sit in the dark, and come back delicious.

Acceptance is the first step. Also, Japanese whiskey is fucking amazing -- and I say that as someone living a short drive from Jack Daniels' distillery -- and I'd put it well in a league of its own. Irrelevant for the conversation, however, as that was a 20th century creation.

In all fairness, most Pirates weren't that bad, relative to their time. Like, yeah there was rape and pillaging, but that was literally just part of being a sailor. Military ships, fishing vessels, all of it. Rape and pillaging just went with the job.

SOME pirates were particularly cruel and violent, but most really weren't. In fact, conditions on pirate ships were often better than on a military vessel, which is why people BECAME pirates in the first place. Not for the money, but it was a safer, more comfortable way to practice their trade.

As for the Romans, like, in all fairness too, there's a real mix there. Like, yeah people hold up the Roman republic as this amazingly efficient and advanced society, but we also talk about Ceasar and Nero and whatnot as these tyrants.

hell the captains of British naval vessels were know to be complete and utter assholes who thought that their subordinates were a bunch of cowards, deserters, thieves, and other degenerates, and treated them accordingly. didn't matter if you were trying to better your life in the military or were a loyalist who joined for patriotism, you were treated like shit. There are even stories about how some captains would refuse to let their sailors learn to swim in order to prevent them from deserting when they were near land. As you can guess, treatment by officers in the navy led to lots of desertions, which led to the officers being even big jackasses and so on. Most pirate captains were the "face" of the group and only led until they fucked up, died, left, or someone better was found and those that acted like one of the officers above likely wouldn't have a ship or crew for very much longer. The real power lied in the bosun and quartermaster. you fucked up by letting your weapon rust or trying to harm a crewmate? to the bosun with you. slacking with your duties? guess who isn't getting shit from the guy in charge of making sure everyone has what they need.

Generally speaking: pirate/privateer<State navies in sofar as how you were treated.
