A player during a session lagged out of Skype in the middle of a huge battle. The DM didn't offer to let one of us take over his character and simply skipped his turn. What the fuck did he mean?

My group just did our first session of Storm King's Thunder. They got through Nightstone and in the process incapacitated Xolkin and basically made him their bitch boy (though they allowed Kella and the pet flying snake to escape knowing what happened).. Now they're in the Dripping Cave and since he's human and all of the party has darkvision, they just tied his hands and left him in Area 6 with no light source and told him not to go anywhere.

There's no way I can just let this slide, right? He's going to feel against the walls, listen for the sound of flowing water, and find his way out. That's realistic isn't it?
>>
Would you let a Paladin swap CHA for WIS as a casting stat or would that fuck up balance? I want to play a Paladin who's explicitly NOT charismatic, but I'd have at least above average CHA just to use abilities well.

There's no multiclassing shenanigans going on either I should mention. I guess I could always just keep CHA at 10 and deal with the shittier casting.
>>
>>50688365
There are a couple ways you could play this. What do you mean specifically by "not charismatic"?
>>
>>50688365
WIS is a primary save stat and is the modifier for the most used ability check in the game, so I'd be very averse from a balance standpoint of letting that happen.
You can have a high CHA stat and not be a people person - CHA is just as much a reflection of inner conviction and strength as it is of outward confidence in demeanor. That's why you resist spells like banishment with CHA.
>>
>>50688356
It's realistic. I'd say do it. Actions have consequences and that's part of what makes the game fun. It also gives you more options to use the character for down the line.
>>
Is Sorcerer the only Spellcaster that has magic inherently in them? More of an intuitive caster than one who prays or studies?
I always thought it was odd that they used Cha and not Wis for spell casting. But i guess Cha is force of personality, so a strong personality results.

Anyone have suggestions for a class that is a spell caster that casts spells because they have an intuition for spellcasting, they just know how to, and as they level up their instinct for spellcasting increases and they just know how to cast more spells? I feel like Sorcerer is maybe the best bet for it cause they aren't taught/trained to be sorcerer, they are just harnessing power within themselves.
>>
>>50688365
As a GM I'd say no.

Murderhobos, I require your assistance.

I know you like indiscriminate monster slaying for dollars and gear, that's all well and good.

What I want to know is do you like dungeon crawls? What about them, do you like or dislike? Are there things you wish more people would do? Would a dungeon centric game be boring to you?
>>
>>50688391
Your typical edgy brooding asshole who's talking through clenched teeth and impatient about things like "not killing his enemies". Vengeance Paladin.

>>50688392
Yeah I'm probably just going to use your typical Paladin statblock and just rp them as being socially shit. At least Intimidate checks will be easy.
>>
>>50688426
Bards learn their magic - it's manipulating the weave as a learned capability through "music magic".
>>
>>50688437
Having a high CHA doesn't stop you from playing that way at all then - you should be good
>>
>>50688435

If one is a murderhobo, dungeons are the perfect time to bathe in the blood of your foes. 99% of the enemies can be killed, no questions asked, with (almost) no restrictions.
>>
>>50688438
If you want to do that, Sorcerer learn to control the weavd via their force of personality too. So it would count as learned magic by your logic.
>>
>>50688219
>>50688260

I guess you have no choice but to die in a fucking fire.
>>
>>50688435
dungeons are the perfect murderhobo scenarios

guilt free combat no questions asked and an implicit promise of great treasure and great combat encounters
>>
>>50688475
Or go back to /pfg/
>>
>>50688469
Sorcerers have an innate tie to magic - manipulating magic is intuitive to them from birth, instilled in their very being intrinsically.

Bards are like wizards but with music and without a book. That's why there are bard *COLLEGES* and wizard *SCHOOLS* while there are sorcerer... nothings.
>>
I've made a lore bard gish
While I have the feat Warcaster and can cast with my bashin' lute in one hand and a shield in the other, would I have to drop my shield to cast a spell with a material component? (Both hands required to play an instrument AFAIK)

Another question; using Major Image, can I just make an illusory 20ft hemisphere of darkness that I can see through (knowing its an illusion) that would hide me and give disadvantage on anyone attacking me within, and advantage for me attacking them?
>>
>>50688503
Do you think sorcerers are looked down on by wizards because they didn't really have to work for their magic?
>>
>>50688435
>What I want to know is do you like dungeon crawls?
Yee

>What about them, do you like or dislike?
Lots of stuff to kill, good
Lots of stuff to loot, good
No where to sell useless stuff that we stole from this dungeon, bad
No where to spend the money we got from selling the useless stuff we stole from this dungeon, bad

Part of being a murderhobo is basically Conan'ing it up and just stealing everything. Rubies are awesome, but if I can't trade them for my weight in health potions or alchemists fire they are just dead weight.

Maybe put some weirdo wandering mechants in there.

Additionally, multiclassing is fun for min-maxing our ability to do the murdering part of murderhoboing. So maybe putting areas in the dungeon with other NPCs who are stuck, trapped, lost, who we can learn some stuff from.

>Would a dungeon centric game be boring to you?

>what are Bardic Colleges
>>
>>50688516

They dislike each other.

Wizards thinks Sorcerers are childish and random, using magic as a toy and not a tool.

Sorcerers think Wizards are stuffy and boring, what's the point of knowing a million spells if you're never going to use half of them.

I always wanted a prestige class that fused the two, somehow bringing the two viewpoints together would make their magic more powerful.

So... you *should* be salty that Usain Bolt can run fast...?
>>
So what exactly is the "MAXIMUM SPEED" build again anyway?

Obviously it requires:
>Base Speed (30 feet)
>Monk15/Barbarian5 (+35, 65 feet)
>Elk Totem Spirit(+15, 80 feet)
>Longstrider (+10, 90 feet)
>Mobile (+10, 100 feet)
>Major Benefit from Artifact (+10, 110 feet)
>Boon of Speed (+30, 140 feet)
>Tabaxi (double speed, 280 feet)
>Haste (doubles speed, 560 feet)
>Boots of Speed (double speed, 1120 feet)
>Dash Actions and the Initial Movement (quadruple speed, 4480 feet)

So a final speed of 4480 per turn, or 227.6 m/s. Thats a lot of fast.
>>

>>
>>50688051

You don't get XP for killing things, you get XP for defeating them in struggle. In a life-or-death struggle any sort of caster is going to be put their abilities in magic to the test, and through that practice their skills may improve.

Also, don't assume that increasing in power is pleasant for a sorcerer. A dragonblood has to deal with bizarre mutations and body horror as their power increases, and don't even get me started on what wild mages have to put up with.
>>
>>50688803

5th level *SPELL*, not 5th level *SLOT*

>>50688986
No, I mean I have an office job and don't run and I can beat upwards of 90% of people aged 16-40 in a 200 meter dash because I have good genes.

>>50688988
I have a 285 bench and a 490 deadlift.
I lift - I don't run. I can still beat you in a sprint.
And if you think two different people with different builds usually walk into the weight room for the first time on even grounds, you're absolutely delusional.
I started lifting my freshman year of highschool, and my starting max bench was like 180. Other guys - who were in the *SAME* position as me - started with a max bench of different numbers (usually much lower).
That wasn't because I had practiced lifting, or put any work at all into lifting beforehand. It was because there are discrepencies in people's basic capabilities. Period.
>>
>>50689053
>5th level *SPELL*, not 5th level *SLOT*
There is no difference. Casting a spell with a slot makes it become a spell of that level. The listed spell of a level is the minimum-level slot you can use it with.
>>
>>50689053
Oh yeah? I don't lift either, but I've got a 340 bench and a 560 deadlift. Just good genes, breh. I could beat you in the 100, the 200, and a marathon, too. Probably 95% of people aged 16-40, couple of professional athletes, too. No big.

I don't believe you but that's fine. The point is to give you an illustration of the fact that some people are just better than other people innately, because you wanted to talk about how wizards should be salty about sorcerers, and I wanted you to tell us all why they should be salty, so I starting making real-world references and asking you if you would be salty about them, at which point you just kept avoiding the question and deflecting into a pointless topic.

Breh, lifting makes you faster. The muscles used for leg day, and everything really, are also great for sprinting? Why do you think Usain bolt is ripped and moderately big? It isn't because of the treadmill.

Also nice moving the goal posts, going from lying about no exercise to lying about exercise.

As far as your lies about early performance, of course people had different levels of early development. People enter puberty at different times, and did different things with their lives up until that point. But they all have about the same potential, and putting in the about the same amount of work will get them there. Barring any serious medical conditions.

Just lift breh, you'll make it.

There are children born with a genetic mutation that essentially gives them double muscles. They are born ripped. "Pasty" is a complexion.
He's not getting any taller by lifting, and his genetic potential simply leaves it so his gains come in much smaller doses and that require much more work than does the 6'2 230 brick guy.

If you'd ever played a sport or frequented a weight room (or even left your house at all), you'd realize that not all humans are genetically equal.

I'm with the jackass.

Real life stats exist, they are rolled at birth and change based on your actions.

Some people are faster, smarter, or stronger than other people. I don't see why this argument is happening. Even if you ignore the jackass and just take into consideration the people at the very top of their conditioning, some will outperform others. This is the entire point of the olympics, or any body based competition.

I think the point you're all missing the most is he's talking about undeveloped kids. If you develop faster of course you'll be stronger or faster than those farther from their prime, training before you hit your prime means a lot less than being a fully (physically) matured adult.
>>
>>50689606
If you start training early enough in your life, anybody can do it. Differences in diet, free time, lifestyle, background, facilities, opportunities, etc. are making up a much larger difference. >>50689729
If you actually tried hard enough you could get into chemical engineering and take a supplement that lowers the body's production of or increases its tolerance of lactic acid, which would allow you to outcompete Bolt in longer races.

>What's the point of blowguns?
You know, I never actually thought about that. It doesn't even make sense as a legacy weapon because I can't remember anyone ever using blowguns even back in AD&D.

The only reason I can think of for keeping blowguns around is for some obscure yet classic monsters that are associated with using them,
>>
>>50690066
That weapon and the trident, I just don't get. The former is just the weakest weapon yet requires martial proficiency, the latter is identical to the spear but heavier and requires martial proficiency...
Aside from "flavor" I see no reason for them...

So it's easily googlable that Kant thinks lust - and most people's conception of love - is immoral in that it treats humans as objects that are means to an end?
And that he preferred to hold that benevolence was virtuous since benevolence could be encapsulated as a duty?

Who you wanna talk about senpai?
I've got Descartes, Hume, Kant, Popper, Hegel, Nietzsche, Leibniz, all the classicals, most of the Vienna Circle dimwits, and a bunch of psedos like Tolstoy, Pascal, Newton, Locke...
Anything in particular?

I still think you're full of shit though, since I've never heard of any phil class below 300 level going deep enough into Kant to get into his views on love, since he barely talks about it.
>>
>>50690099
>I've got a literal and actual philosophy 101 curriculum and nothing else

Your latest mistake is thinking names instead of subjects are impressive.

If you're going to play pretend, at least break out some obscure names like spinoza, or some modern names like singer, Russell, Rawls, or Nozick
>>
>>50690118
It was some 4e designer's special snowflake lady that married Nerul, then killed him and took his place, but instead of being a stone cold bitch she was pure and Neutral and honestly kind of boring until she nearly got killed by Orcus pulling the Shard of Evil out of the Abyss to fuck up reality.
>>
>>50690161
I'm sure so many phil 101 classes teach Leibniz Newton and Popper, yeah.
>>
>>50690155
The class was talking about philosophical perspectives on love, and it was above 300 level. If that's odd then I can't explain it, i don't know how they decide the prerecs for classes.
>>
>>50690161
>spinoza

I hated Spinoza.
Terribly boring to read, and with what I think is a vacuous conclusion in his primary thesis.
>>
>>50690187
>and it was above 300 level
Damn right it was.
You're not getting into Kant on love in some fucking intro class. That would be *REALLY* janky.
>>
>>50690177
Mine did. Philosophy 101 is generally an overview, full of light treatments you can expect to regurgitate on 4chan for years to come, like "Kant didn't like lust". Later classes got into the weeds on subjects that interested me.
>>
>>50690233
I really, *REALLY* cannot imagine that in a 101 class, having TA'd 101 classes.

You're working with "what is logic", "what is epistemology", "what is metaphysics", "what is ethics", "what is induction/deduction", "what is philosophy of the mind/identity".

Philosophers themselves barely feature. I don't see where anything about Leibniz and his modality could *possibly* fit in a semester of PHIL 101, or why he'd ever come up except to maybe be named once or twice.
>>
>>50690275

And you're not actually a human, and are just an illusion subjected upon me by a Cartesian demon.
You really make me think.
Leibniz does not make for good 101 work at all - you can't throw modality at newbies and people taking phil 101 for their gen ed requirement and expect good results.

I'm in a campaign based in a hefty open world where exploring and micromanaging our resources, supplies and such when travelling as important. Art objects found as treasure are more than simply loot, we have to find reasonable buyers if we want good value and the like. Coins found are in varied currencies, from Dwarven Glimmers, Imperial Karls, Golden Falcons, which are all varients on GP. Golden Eggs are heavy, oval shaped coins worth 5gp. Platinum Sunbursts, or "Curses" as they are more commonly known, are an exotic currency used by the old fallen empire. Most places don't accept them as currency as to have a bag of curses means you either bartered with graverobbers, or are graverobbers.

Currently organising our Wagon with supplies, tools and equiptment as we made the mistake when clearing out a small dragons lair. We killed her kobold servants, piled the coprses high and waited for her to meet our challenge. After an hour or so she never showed up, so we went back to the ruined buildings nearby where we stowed our wagon to regroup and attempt to track her down, only to find it smashed, our horse mauled and partially eaten with the dragon smugly lazing on the roof of the broken building waiting for us to meet her challenge. A few encounters later we finally take her down for good and we're heading back to the nearest city with a few sacks of treasure over one guys shoulder, all the supplies we can carry over anothers, and the Barbarian missing a leg now using part of the cart as a walking crutch.

So what are some essentials to have on the new wagon? We've already got an arcane lock enchanted double-padlock chest for our valuables, two barrels of water and plenty of food although we don't seem to need as much since we only tend to use it at times where we can't forage on the move. Just want to check if there are any mundane supplies we really should have on us, some "Dungoneer/Outback Explorer essentials" that you wouldn't leave at home without.

Okay, you've impressed me. A paper that sums up a singular aspect of somebody's philosophy without adding original thought or ideas is pretty 101 level stuff, but the philosopher being discussed is not commonly discussed in philosophy 101.

So congrats, I now think you're in 102 or an entry level polisci/phi class.

Your writing style is atrocious, see your professor after class.

>>
>>50690116
That's a poor excuse.
'They're powerful, so they should be good at everything' is the way a mary sue is.

An ancient mage may have traded away their bodily health or even reached the point where they no longer have a body in order for power. A lich has flaws relating to lichdom, and no longer has flesh and blood.

A queen of a country has to be careful. While powerful, they can't reveal themself at every opportunity as if they go around without guards they put themself in danger. Even if they have guards, it's hard for them to try to live a normal life as everybody will recognize them.

This transformation dragon bullshit is just 'lol it's fantasy who cares'.
I mean, your DM might as well not even prepare a CR 30 ambush doom bot. The DM might as well at any time say 'actually, whatever civillian you attacked was god. You die.'
A character is much more interesting if they have flaws due to their power, rather than conveniently being able to ignore all of those problems like the chucklefuck they are. That's the difference between a mary sue type character who doesn't really have any problems in their life and their only goals can be 'kill gods' or something stupid, compared to an interesting, fleshed-out character who has issues like 'I have to get my kobold servants to do a lot of every day work for me, moving around just consumes so much energy.' That means the dragon now has reason to send minions after the party instead of just stomping their shit day one.
