Incoming ramble.
I like to think that these dudes are slaneshii, and that their particular focus is love,, lust, devotion and what not. they worship eachother in every aspect, and through that whole hearted and interchangably mindful/mindless adoration they worship she who thirsts.

It is a high, a warmth that can turn you molten in battle and in soul. And when their bonded are torn from them, they feel a different intensity, one that shatters them and leaves them to rebuild or die off. They are encouraged to explore this, to exalt in it in their own ways. The cult does not have many spacemarines, As they have already become jaded, or have trouble connecting to others in way beyond Battle brotherhood, But those who do lead the cult are empath psyckers, Carefully feeding their own highs by skimming off of the intense emotional connections, and in battle, as those emotional links are shattered, that burst of emotion allows them to power up their attacks, Leading to a twisted dance of using their bonded cultists and brothers tactically, both as combat units and power boosters.

The mind games that it'd take to keep this going for a long time could be tzeentch in aspect.
>>
>>
>>50688996
They are in fact Slaaneshi. Just look at their marks.

If I recall correctly, the artist was trying to demonstrate the loss of a couple of lovers torn apart by war
>>
>>50689092
Thought so. Also, Less torn apart, more burned apart.

Anyways, I think I'm gonna have that cult in my next game. I made them up on the spot, I might as well see if the idea gets me somewhere.

That's actually a pretty interesting idea for a Slaanesh cult. It's valid too since Slaanesh is all about excess of anything

Commorrite degenerate here, just want to say you Lamenter mon-keighs are pretty gutsy.
>>
>>50689131
of course, it would be a mix of healthy and very very unhealthy relationships, probably all at the same time. All the facets of what we understand love to be as an emotional high taken to the max. Manipulation, back stabbing, trust and forgiveness, all sort of... wontonly mixed and meshed as they struggle through a silly amount of politalking internally.

They might have a couple of shisms:

a few over mono-love, poly-love and all the variants therein when one considers gender roles like polyandry and polygamy. the discourse on powering energy into a mutually absorbed duo or trifecta, or spreading your love around to as many as possible and existing in a state of benign neglect most of the time with most partners, only to clash into each-other when the time calls for it, as eager and energetic as any other pair could possibly be, only to move on afterwards along the respective social-orbits, perhaps longing for then next time they cross paths, perhaps already looking forward to the next partner. New relationship Energy is a concept worth looking into in regards to this.

Another Schism could be the artificial use of neurochemicals instrumental to emotional bonding and love. Some see it as a hunt for exess in the name of their god/ess, Others see it as the cowards way in, And that any worship it creates is hollow and half hearted, for the partakers did not truly work for those critical moments, and their relationships are all the more brittle for it.

Anyways, I like the idea of cults of the chaos gods purposefully limiting their worship, Specializing it, turning it from a wide ray-blast into a focused laser of intention and emotion. Particularly long lived Cultists of this type may slip from one laser-focus to the next, or go from Ray to beam, beam to ray and back and forth as they explore and weasel out the nuances of the warp. Of course, they never really realize that those nuances are reflection off infinitesimal ripples in the immaterium,

>>
>>50689609
Path of Heaven was so good.

>High up in the terraces overlooking the command throne, one hundred and thirty two power weapons kindled, flooding the heights with a wave of neon-blue. One hundred and thirty-two storm shields slammed into place, and one hundred and thirty-two throats opened in battle challenge.

>"Khagan" they roared, in perfect unison.

I love watching gutsy last stands, and that was one of my favorites.
>>
>>50689742
Here's the reading order for White Scars in HH from top to bottom.

Brotherhood of the Storm (short story in Legacies of Betrayal)
Scars (novel)
Allegiance (short story in War Without End)
Daemonology (short story in War Without End)
Brotherhood of the Moon (short story in Eye of Terra)
Grey Talon (audio drama)
Path of Heaven (novel)

>>
>>50689888
Technically, the whole plot thread starts with Thousand Sons, continues with Prospero Burns, and one short story in Age of Darkness before leading into Scars. But if all you care about is totally rad space Mongolian bikers, then everything I listed is fine. Except Daemonology now that I think about it, but it adds some exposition for Mortarion and how much of a hypocrite he is.

But yeah, Scars and Path of Heaven are some of the best HH out there in my opinion.

That actually hits me right in the feels.

>be abused and physically modified to constantly feel anger
>person who claims to have saved you in fact betrayed your friends to your abusers, and now forces you to fight in war for all eternity
>fall in with the wrong crowd and end up getting possessed by a god who consists solely of rage and hatred

Angron never knew happiness, except perhaps when he led his slave revolt. But even then the 40k universe/chaos gods/Emperor deny him the comfort of believing in an afterlife for them and himself.

I remember when I joined a bunch of /tg/ members on a minecraft server a while back. I forget what it was called but it was a 4chan faction server, joined a faction called the Lamenters. Such is life for the Lamenters.

i'm sure if he found their souls in the warp he would. Fighting against an enemy so much larger than yourself in single melee combat, while the enemy shoots at you and your leader has disappeared, out of pure "fuck you" spite? That's Khorne's bread, butter and jam. Not to mention they all had the butcher's nails anyway, so they'd fit in with his ideals even in the afterlife.

In fact, the first Grey knight series novel, it's said that Sisters do in fact fall to Chaos but the sisterhood covers it up.

"I'm sorry for what I did to you, Brother." Lorgar said with the faintest trace of apprehension in his voice. "You must understand, what I turned you into, I did it yo save your life. Now you are more powerful than you could have ever imagined." Lorgar continued. He worried that his actions would be seen as a betrayal of his brother. In the same way the Emperor stealing his honorable death had been.
Yet there was no anger on the daemon's face A strange look of contentment on its inhuman shape. The burning eyes closed for a moment. The large red boney finger rested on Lorgars shoulder. Angron spoke.
"The pain..." He groaned in a horrid gutteral speech. Not quite used to his new body. "I can't feel the pain anymore. My mind feels..." The primarch's mind wondered. He didn't know or understand the emotion he felt. Something entire foreign to him. The weight of everything he understood in the world vanished. Like feeling returning to a numb limb. It confused him, yet entreated him. "Free." The primarch cracked its lips into what could be described as a smile. "Is this happiness brother?"
Lorgar hesitated. Knowing that soon the god of blood would fill this void in his mind with hatred and anger once again. He embraced his brother, allowing him to live in the fantasy for a moment. To feel what was so common to other yet denied his entire life.
"Yes, brother. That is happiness"

That even though they don't need eating, drinking and sleeping they still have those they care about and actual families.

The whole going South to pillage and burn? It's to not only punch Nortlanders, Middenheimers, Marienburgers and etc in order to appease to the Chaos Gods, but also to bring back the needed stuff that your wife and kids will need during difficult times.

I like my feelsy stuff to be canon, and I also like it when the big guy stand up for the little guy. so I chose the celestial Lions as the chapter for my space marines, the guys who have the most throbbing hate boner for the inquisition after they exterminatus'd a planet that the Lions had just won back from chaos, saving all of the civilian on it.
they got so mad that they went to holy terra to take the inquisitor to task for what he'd done

Generally, the rule is only one *willingly* chose Chaos. So you can feel free to have Sisters who were mind-controlled, Sisters who acquired some terrible artifact that twisted them, Sisters who slew a powerful demon but were forever tainted by its presence and became the very thing they swore to destroy, etc. etc.
It's basically a way of making them distinct from Grey Knights, who don't ever get corrupted ever, and Space Marines, who actually pose a very serious risk of falling to Chaos under the right conditions and so must be carefully watched.
I think it's good fluff. Best of both worlds, we can have evil nuns while keeping the good nuns special.

I think the first thing you have to prove to them and prove *hard* is:
>You know the setting
>You know how to write action

That's it. You're still supposed to pack in character arcs and a little depth, but they're genuinely serious when they say they want five explosions in two paragraphs.
Which is why it feels so weird when they reject what might be genuinely good writing in favor of "HONOR OF THE SPACE MARINES #3,122".
Give 'em pulp first, and maybe someday will get more "Eisenhorn".

I KNOW..

Fuck I even tried presenting it as a more "nonfiction" story as if these events really occurred. Emphasising the humanity in the Imperial Guard so when they start dying it has that original impact of HOLY FUCK HOW WASTEFUL

The funny thing is I fucking HATE the saturation of shit marines dying in super numbers and being useless. I figured a long book of IG being tacticool would help build up how fucking holy and FUCK the Space Marines are, but naaaah

"Brother, you have held fast and we have come for you".

"I recognize not your heraldry. I did not hear your coming, by Vox or ear. We expected no rescue, and in truth my life alone being saved is still nothing compared to what we have lost this day. You would have been better served to have cleansed this planet - if Brothers true you are. Think I do not see the taint of the warp on you? The flames that burn but do not cleanse? I am Loyal, and my only Brothers are those that fought beside me here, and those that will fight for the Emperor as I shall until my final breath. If you came to rescue me, you have wasted your time, and if you came to try and tempt me away for any prize even my life, you have wasted your life in turn for I shall take it from you."

"Brother, I say again, for Brothers we truly are under the light and love of the Emperor, we have come for you. Not as a rescue, for if you had not noticed your life is already done. Spent, and spent well fighting the foes of Man. But while your life is done, your duty is not yet. We have come for you, to ask you to join us in this holy duty that persists past death. To be consumed by these flames, that cleanse the soul not the flesh. To cast these flames upon the foes of the Imperium, not the clean and blessed light of His Will that protects, but his rage and hatred to be brought to the dark places where the enemies of Man hide, and to burn them out even as you bear the flames yourself."

Never give up, but also bear in mind you are mostly writing for hire if you want to work for BL. Writing what their largest audiences want is the most important thing a new author should do. Keep the good stuff for later, or find a way to cram it full with explosions and decapitations.

You didn't put Romance in your submission, did you?

Because BL fucking HATES that. Even Cain is more of a nod and a wink towards it.

Also, what was the length of the novel you sent in? Often times, short stories are better since there is less risk and it's easier to focus on one particular aspect.

Even trying to get something in for

this sort of thing might be a good idea. Get your foot in the door as it were. Also you can churn out a ton of short attempts in different "tones" to try and see what they're interested in.

Despite the jokes and sad realities of 40k lore, GW DOES have protecting its IP and making it what they think is marketable.

Also apparently it's insanely hard to get into BL without knowing someone.

Link is broken. See https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Black_Library_Submissions_Window for an idea of what the BL is like. Yes, yes, 1d4chan LOL but the points they make about the companies size and stable of authors are relevant.

Getting published elsewhere isn't a bad idea, actually. It lets you approach them as a writer and not just a fan.

Still want to try? Don't post shit on 4chan. Post shit EVERYWHERE. On dakkadakka, Bolter & Chainsword, HeresyOnline.

Stalk current authors online. ADB has a decent web presence. Don't do this by spamming links to your writing at them, instead consistently engage with them (or offer to engage).

Always use the same identity. Build it up as a fan they recognize across multiple internet sites so that you come up when they google the name you use.

Get a twitter. Post about updates to your writing.

Get a FB. Post teasers and short pieces and links to your writing.

Get a linkedin profile even, connect your author/online identity with your real identity.

If you want to be a writer for BL, you have to realize that this is an actual JOB and they want to hire people who treat writing like a career.
>>
>>50706092
well fuck... thats good advice
>>
>>50706035
Well, that's what they want so that's what you have to give them. The best writing, I'm pretty sure, would be featuring new units and lore and subtly pushing product for GW.

>>50706092
Continued.

Write pieces varying in length, tone, and subjects. Maybe you have your one baby, maybe you prefer one type of lore over another, that's fine but the more original work you can put out the more you'll come up and the more likely that SOMETHING you write will appeal.

Second is engage in the community at as many levels as possible, with a consistent identity. Get name recognition, not just from fans but from authors. Make sure to push your writing to the fans, but engage the authors about how to write, and how to improve it, or keep the discussion about THEIR writing. If only people who know BL authors can get in, work on getting to know them.

Follow ADB
> ttps://aarondembskibowden.wordpress.com/

Read his posts. Comment. Don't start fights with him OR other users. Ask questions about lore or characters in his books etc. Read all his books too, of course. Don't slag other authors.

This ties into your post here >>50706035 in fact. You gotta be up to date on what they're putting out, and what the tone and format is.

Maybe you can repurpose your IG novel to have some submissions to Regimental Standard. Short tongue in cheek interviews about Guardsmen stationed on different planets, suitably edited with statements that could be taken multiple ways.
>>
>>50706059

For the record it shouldn't be hard to find the thread, it's up right now. You don't have to go digging through the archives or anything.
>>
>>50706137
It's one thing to be a good writer, it's another to be an editor/publisher.

BL already has a bunch of authors to manage. Believe it or not, the last thing an editor wants is ANOTHER author to manage. Especially a new one, especially a new one who is unpublished for anything, and so very much moreso than anything else do they not want to deal with a new unpublished Author who is a fan an established setting whose IP is owned by another company and has had many controversial retcons and is tied to a product line, let alone one as disparate and self-conflicting as WH40k.

You will never hand them a completed novel that they will read through and think is perfect. Let me rephrase, you will never hand them a completed novel because until they read through and edit it, it's just a draft.

And they are currently getting drafts and editing for their current authors already, getting one from some joe schmoe won't even get them to glance at it because for them it isn't an opportunity, it's just "more work". That they aren't getting paid for.

Even if you did write their ideal novel, they still have to go to Corporate and see if it's in line with what they want to promote for the IP, if there are any legal issues, if they have the money or staff to put it together as a novel for release, are you going to be available long-term to work with on editing, or even able to be worked with at all or are you a raging autist, and a bunch of other stuff too before they get to the big question of "Will this sell".

Which is, you know, kind of an issue itself.

"Will this sell". Are you already published and have brand recognition? Does it fit in with other works currently in devlopment? Will it actually draw sales away from other, reliable releases? Will it promote the main IP sales for WH40K?

Honestly, whether or not it fits the setting and lore is pretty minor compared to those issues, because that stuff can be edited out.
>>
>>50706006
Take my advice with a grain of salt because, you know, anonymous on the internet. But let me tell you, I've a) been published myself twice, pretty much by accident and for short pieces, and more importantly b) I have a family member who has been published independently once and through a publishing company twice and is a Professor of Literature (nowhere famous but still) and so I got to learn a lot about the back end of publishing.

It's a fuckload different than writing, let me tell you, and new/unpublished people are a pain in the ass and risky. You always get interviews and forwards from/for established writers talking about how their work got thrown out a lot, or almost thrown out, etc. and they were applying to DOZENS of publishers.

If you want to apply to ONE, you have to know what they're looking for not just as an IP, but also as an employer, and then you have to figure out how to get them to value interacting with you enough find out how to address those concerns, let alone actually addressing them, let alone read anything you submit.
>>
>>50706328
>>50706137

Another example of what goes into getting published - marketing. They have to have someone figure out what to release your book as, when to release it, how many copies to print, how to tie it in to the established IP both for BL & GW, maybe for the DoW trilogy.

Maybe you send in a novel, but they're looking for short stories. Maybe you send in a novel, but it's 800 pages and they're looking for 400. Maybe it's about the Eldar, but Gav Thorpe is releasing an Eldar book sometime in the next 6 months/year and they don't want to split the fanbase. Maybe you write Eldar but you reference a mechanic or faction that's getting revamped by GW.

And without being already involved in the BL company, there's no way for you to know any of this stuff, and it's not like you can just ask.

"Submission competitions" aren't about finding new talent, they're publicity events to promote marketing and get interest and investment from everyone who applies, everyone they know, and word of mouth about the event.
>>
>>50706328

Honestly i wasn't planning on applying to the black library. At the moment i don't have a story worth sending to them. I'm just writting here on /tg/ for fun and maybe for practice and with the hope i'll get some good feedback. I do have a few stories i would like to get published, but they aren't warhammer. I'm aware of the difficulties of getting published, that's why i haven't planned my life around being a writer and just do it on the side. Thank you very much for your advice, though. It is appreciated, and i'm grateful to you for taking the time to share your experience with me.

Hey man, writing for yourself is the best kind of writing there is. Well, after "writing to get a paycheck because you've already spent the advance and you're past your deadline but you're too established for them to just drop so you don't have to sacrifice quality and you have an understanding and tolerant editor" because honestly that kind of pressure/freedom contradiction is amazing for the creative process.

And I don't want to discourage you, or anyone, from writing and trying to get published. I just get kind of frustrated at how many people think it's just a matter of writing something good and not knowing about all the other factors that influence getting published.

Because then they get frustrated, or lose confidence, and end up stopping writing.

Also I like to talk about this sort of stuff. I was honestly kind of hoping someone else out there would chime in or something.

Anyways, continuing with 40keks

WE ARE AGONISINGLY ALONE.

Don't care that BL and Goulding are retconning the shit out or the HH to fit their daddy issues and fanfiction in it, this version of Empy will always be better than the turbo autist/atheist/overall dickhead they try to portray him as.

Others like pride are left in full force.
>>
>>50715114

They probably feel the full range of human emotion (save fear), but are highly conditioned and trained so they don't pose a problem.

And, in many different chapters, they have different temperaments. Some are glum about their duty, others brash and prideful, quick to anger, bitter, borderline psychotic, self-important, reserved, pragmatic, nearly emotionless, or even pretty good-natured. Basically, they feel all emotions, save for fear. Because they are the Emperor's Space Marines and they shall know no fear.

old dude is Uber Aemos, savant and career nerd

woman closest to him is Alizebeth Bequin. The blank, you should have met her by now

Curls are the Betancore's Midas and his daughter, who replaces him later in the series

Big nigger I think is Godwyn Fischig. With the messed up face it makes sense. Dude's an arbite and the tank of the group

Well judging by that humanized tumblr's good and charming good looks; >>50723961 I think he MIGHT, MIGHT or maybe even be part of politics in terms of being a poster boy for being a "smart and charming and talented" young human man. Hell I might even see him as an inquisitorial member to be used for negotiations.

You know what also makes me sad? In this discussion about BL admissions they stated that they go for ACTION, THREE EXPLOSIONS is na paragraph!

Best Black Library stories I have ever read are far from it and in case of short stories it makes them closer to good reading.

I just now learned that I have to steer clear from not only retconing cringefest that Horus Heresy became, but also any other thing they make from now on. Bad writing for people with short attention span became company policy.

You made me sad, anons. I can't contain the feels.

Considering GW's bigges income stream are beginner that splurge and then move on and most of those are teenage boys it's not really that surprising.

If GW was smarter about marketing it's IP they'd diversify more to make it attractive to a more mature audience too though.

I mean considering that they just now in 2016 have started to use social media for marketing purposes under their new CEO gives me a little hope in that regard.
In the end Black Library published pulp fiction though. I don't expect them to ever release great literary works of art.
