Say that one was attempting to tame a monster or other dangerous creature. How should they go about winning the beast over? Giving them food? Asserting dominance? Head pats?

This. I stopped my cat from eating a bird once and the bird was really chill afterwards. Inly flew away when ine of my neighbors got too close. Doesn't always work. You have to literally snatch them from the jaws of death for them to trust you. I've caught birds that flew into my house afterwards and they didn't care.

What kind of monster? Pack hunter? Extremely dangerous gatherer?
It all depends.
