The entire thing was built to cap a dormant volcano, the pit in the piddle drops bodies into the lava for sacrifice. Heretics are given a trial by combat on a metal grate over the pit, if they can defeat a number of animals/beasts (determined by the severity of their crime) before the grate opens and they drop, they go free.
