There are people out there that actually do have such "trigger words." My sister works with them every day (she's a social worker).

So there was that. Then there were a bunch of attention whores on the internet who acted like attention whores and turned trigger words into a joke. And then the jokesters fed the whores and then things have progressed to where they are now.

I think something like this x card thing is an extension of that bullshittery. There are certainly people that have these kinds of issues. But by the time they EVER get brought up in a campaign, IF they ever get brought up, everyone should be good friends with each other and fine with just talking these things out or cutting them out if somebody asks.

If rape comes up early enough that you need a card to call it out, then maybe your DM is just shit.

And if the trigger is something more generically bad like murder or some weird association with knives or w/e, perhaps D&D isn't the best choice of pastime.

Or hey, you know the incredibly common D&D thing of being eaten alive? Pretty much any given huge enemy is going have some "Swallow Whole"-esque ability, it seems.
Now imagine your DM being really into vore, and going into great detail about the thing.


Being triggered by violence and gore probably wouldn't be too much of an issue in D&D, to be honest - hit points are handwavey bullshit, so all that requires is that you don't go into too great detail about what exactly a hobgoblin doing eight damage to your twenty-hit point cleric means.

There's a difference between, say, how The Dark Knight handled combat and Adam West's Batman - neither showed blood, but the former is a lot more violent in its violence.

But yeah, if you can't handle violence you probably shouldn't be playing a game as violent as modern D&D. I could maybe see OD&D and similar working out, but 2E onward combat is the de facto way of engaging with the system.
Instead you should go for, I dunno, Ryuutama. Or GURPS.

That's the Yamato, the largest Battleship in the world. The Japanese sunk a ridiculous amount of resources into constructing three of them, but by the time the first two were completed it was becoming increasingly clear that Aircraft Carriers and air power were dominating the field. Since they had sunk so much prestige and resources into the Yamato, they just kind of let it sit in port until it was way too late for it to make any difference, and then just kind of threw it at some 400 bombers to show they tried their best.

It was the fault of the Japanese themselves, really. Most of the major navies of the world had realized the advantages of air power, but it was the Japanese who made full use of it at Pearl Harbor (half the British bombers at Taranto were biplanes and much fewer in number) and forced the United States to rely on its carriers (having sunk or temporarily crippled their battlewagons.)

It's not just rape. For example, I really don't like violence towards children. I can't stand to see it happen in real life, I don't want to spend my free time playing games about it.

So I avoid stuff like Nechronica and other obvious things where kids will be hurt. But I might sign up for a con game, and halfway through the adventure it becomes Temple of Doom and there's a child labour camp. I'm not going to keep playing that game; the options are either that I leave the table or I voice my concerns and see if the GM wants to change it to adults working there. The X Card would be a way for that change to happen without me having to explain my history with child abuse to a bunch of strangers.

Also, how the fuck are you supposed to know what's going to happen in a con game? You can't know not to play with those people in the first place, because literally all you know about those people is that they're running a D&D 2e adventure at 3 o'clock on Saturday for a two hour slot.
