I have an issue, /tg/.
Last session we had, one of my players made a promise to an NPC. My original plan was to see if he forgot it while being caught up in the adventure.
But then fucking life happened, and we haven't had a session for 4 or 5 weeks. So real time it's been almost over a month, but in game, it's been a matter of hours.
I don't know if he would have remembered on his own in the next regular weekly session.
Is it unfair of me to expect him to remember, or should I mention it to him given that it's only been a day in game?

Drop him a hint about having made a promise to see if it jogs his memory. If he remembers it's all good, if he doesn't you gave him a fair chance to remember without negating the point of whatever deal you had going with him and the NPC.

Depending on the circumstances I'd probably just remind him. Basically, don't just hope he remembered something from that long ago if you weren't sure he'd remember over one week.
Alternatively, you could do some sort of recap at the beginning of the session (probably a good idea anyway, after that long) and make sure there's a reference to it in there somewhere, just enough that it should probably remind him.
If you want to be a rule stickler you can also have him roll against his int.

Why not Wisdom?

Sorry, I was thinking about a game without a wisdom score.

What makes the story better? Do that.

Int/Wis check vs whatever difficulty seems appropriate.
If marginal success: Drop a hint.
If great success: Flat out tell him what he should know.
If fail: Don't tell his stupid ass nuffin, serves him right for dumping Int/Wis.
