Hey pals

I'm relatively new to tabletop gaming (like a year or two of experience at most) and I wanted to ask a few questions so that I get the most out of my experiences without going broke.

So I've played MTG and D&D 5e pretty thoroughly, and I understand most of the general patterns and strategies to playing either game. I learned both fairly fast and I can actually play both with decent skill. I've even DM'd a short D&D adventure before.

40k caught my interest but looking at these gigantic collections of autistic plastic figures that cost shitloads of money immediately lost me. I think the lore is cool as fuck but I don't want to sell my soul to play with miniatures.

So, as an experimenting game player, what should I do to expand my game variety beyond d&d 5e and MTG? Anything from different role playing systems to board games is in the realm of possibility. 40k universe stuff would be cool too.

Check out 1d4chan, they have an easily digestible summary of most tabletop games.
>>
>>50557538
Would you personally recommend anything?

If you do like 40k, you can always check out Dark Heresy, Rocue Trader and the like
Overall really good games even if I'm not a fan of percentile system and it sometimes feels mechanically bloated
If you want to play a simile of wh40k wargame and don't give a shit about minis, check out Toymallet40cents

If you like 40k but don't want to spend an assload of money, you could try out Kill Team. It operates on a much smaller scale (like 10 models per side at most) and was specifically designed for money-conscious folks such as yourself.

You could also give the 40k RPGs a go. Dark Heresy 2nd Edition is pretty awesome.
>>
>>50557196
If you get the chance, try out GURPS. Playing online is always an option
>>
>>50558013
That looks neat to try out.
>>
If you want something very fast, easy and fun, check out Barbarians of Lemuria too
Awesome rpg and setting, excellent system and very cinematic fights
It's also very easy to refluff as something else like Space Marines or other

>plastic figures that cost shitloads of money immediately lost me
you played mtg and you call 40k expensive?
>>
>>50558233
Did I ever say how much I spent on MTG? I only have 2 decks and typically play drafts/sealed at FNM which I hardly go to. The rest I play casually and with friends.

I don't expect 40k to be nearly as popular among my friends or as simple to set up so I want something quicker and something that wouldn't cause a great big headache.
>>
>>50558318
that's a little less than your typical, but even with 40k or AoS if you build your army slowly over time it costs a lot less than people claim. You purchases might be a little larger than someone buying a few boosters each week, but they will also be less frequent.
>>
>>50558013
How exactly do I build an army for this? What types of things can I/can't I use?
>>
>>50558464
If you are familiar with the core rules, the kill team rules pretty much spell out everything you can and cannot do.

A single box of infantry is fine for most factions, but some factions with less elite infantry may need more than one box.

The Kill Team starter box comes with ten space marines (the full kit with all the same weapon options, easily 200 points right there) and a full fire warrior kit (with full options I think it comes to a little less than the space marines, but it is close). The kill team box also comes with the core rule book, and the kill team rules.

With more elite troops like Deathwatch, especially bikers, a kill team can be as few as five models, maybe even less.

It does not contain the full rules for the Space Marine or Tau factions, so if you want to use other Space Marine or Tau units not included in the box you will need to consult other rulebooks.

The 40k general thread has a link to some rulebooks if you are pirate scum.

So I have to buy the rules for factions I want to play?

I have yet to scroll over the 40k rules but I (hope) it doesn't sound too hard.

Also, how do I acquire model terrain for gameplay?

Here's a pdf with the rules. Like >>50558519 said, you can find the other rulebooks and codices here: https://mega.nz/#F!BxI1HSgI!0tKymKh9RZTzGpgIA5EyCg

To answer your question more in-depth, I'm going to assume you know literally nothing about tabletop 40k. I'll do my best to explain, but the rulebook does it better. You build an army by selecting the codex for the army you wish to play. For example, if you want to play Space Marines, you'll need to bring units from Codex: Space Marines. Next, you and your opponent agree on how many points you wish to play with. A typical Kill-Team game is 200 pts, a typical 40k game usually ranges between 1,500 and 2,000. Next, select units and upgrades to bring from the codex you chose, making a list of said units and upgrades called an army list. This is used to keep track of who you've brought and what they've got. If you've played any of the Total War games, it uses a similar formula.

Units are divided into categories: HQ (Commanders), Troops (standard infantry), Elites (specialist or veteran units), Fast Attack (skirmishers and scouts), and Heavy Support (tanks, artillery, and such). There are more, but they aren't really important to this scenario.

In Kill-Team, each player gets up to 200 points. You can bring up to two Troops units, one Elites unit, and/or one Fast Attack unit in any combination. The Kill-Team book itself does a fairly good job at walking you through the rest of army construction one step at a time.

>So I have to buy the rules for factions I want to play?
generally yes. There are digital "Gamer Editions" of the rules for some factions that cost less but are missing all of the fluff, so if you just want the rules that isn't a bad route.

Terrain can be scratch built, or bought in kits from tons of different manufacturers. If you are playing at a store or club, they usually have some already. If you look up "Commissar Gamza" on youtube he has a lot of videos for making wargames terrain from trash and everyday items on a very tight budget.

40k rules... are a bit more complicated then they need to be. Rumor is the next edition coming out in a couple years will streamline it some, but GW hasn't actually announced anything. Games Workshop has another wargame, with much better rules, and the rules are even FREE, but if you even suggest that you like it people will make fun of you. The worst part is that the loudest opponents of Age of Sigmar usually haven't read the rules. The Age of Sigmar rules are only four pages long and are free, but people still don't read them...

The basic 40k rules are very simple, they just layer a bunch of fiddly bits on top that are easy to forget or exploit loopholes with.

gee, you guys are a lot more helpful than some of the other boards that I've tried to ask about other various things.

So the idea is that I get a codex for shit that looks cool, get my army ready, and then go to battle? And each unit costs so many points out of that 200 total, correct?

>So I have to buy the rules for factions I want to play?
Yeah, but you can get the army rules from the mega link I posted earlier so you can decide which army you like before dropping money on their codex or units.

>I have yet to scroll over the 40k rules but I (hope) it doesn't sound too hard.
Miniwargaming has some good videos explaining how to play the game. They also have lots of videos of games in progress so you can see what it actually looks like.

>Also, how do I acquire model terrain for gameplay?
Like >>50558669 said pretty much any gaming/hobby store will have some. This time of year, you can also pick up some of those little christmas houses and trees to use as terrain (pic related).

>So the idea is that I get a codex for shit that looks cool, get my army ready, and then go to battle? And each unit costs so many points out of that 200 total, correct?
Yup. Additionally, taking upgrades (upgrading a boltgun to a plasma gun, for example) costs points as well. As I said, the Kill-Team book does a fairly good job walking you through it.

Another good place to check out is 1d4chan, they've got some good tactics articles that help to break down the individual armies, which is helpful for choosing who you want to play: https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Category:Warhammer_40000_Tactics

Just ignore any army that ends with a (30k), you want to look for the (7e) ones.
