So, question: What would wargaming be like in a world with out 40k? Assuming that Rogue Trader bombed horribly, what would it be like today? Would games like infinity, warmachine and Malifaux exist? Would WHFB take its place?

This board wouldn't exist.

Battletech would trundle along as the main sci-fi tabletop game, giving the genre a bad name as those '80s aesthetics and model quality tried to last into the 2000s. So yeah, WHFB would rule (potentially Lord of the Rings), and maybe WWII games would be bigger.

GW would be a much smaller company company but with a broader product range.

I think a lot of the wargames that popped up in the early and mid 90s would probably still be around in a greater capacity than now.

world debt would be half what it is

40k's huge success even with all it's flaws prooves that there is a demand for such setting. So without 40k we would end up with something else that would be almost like 40k.

>RT tanked because it couldn't hope to topple the majesty of Laserburn.
>Because of this 15mm Sci-Fi is standard fare
>Laserburn lacks the self-parodying GrimDark⢠so many miniature games that follow tend to also steer clear of pointless GrimDarkâ˘ification.
>Otherwise, not much changes overall.

Laserburn wasn't exactly noblebright my dude
The whole "fascist imperium vs shit that may or may not be a lot worse" schtick was still being played up
The Imperium were nazis and the other faction (reds or something) were isis
