In my group's homebrew everyone gets 1 additional skill rank per level which they can put in shit skills. Atleast one of them usually goes into swim for me. Otherwise I probably wouldn't put a point in there unless I know it's an aquatic campaign.

Generally I put enough ranks in that I can take 10 and make a DC 10 check, if I have skill points to spare. In the very unlikely event of an underwater adventure, I can probably magic myself a swim speed anyway.

I kind of wish aquatic adventures were done more often than never, there's a huge portion of the bestiaries that goes unused because the creatures only live underwater.

So I dunno if what I have is any good because I'm a PF novice, so who wants to help me with Catherine build-wise?

Things I know I want: Full levels in Tactician(Commander), the ability to use it's spells and features effectively, Thrallherd PrC, a second manifesting class to take full advantage of Thrallherd(can't be a full manifester), good bluff skill.

Anything else is pretty much gravy, I've taken cryptic because it's an Int-based half-manifester, it's mastery of traps seems interesting in a tactical sense and that little at-will ray attack seems nice to have and probably more useful than any weapon wielded by Catherine, but to be honest I don't like the idea of her being all tattooed up so I'll replace it if I can find something near as good.

Okay. Building an Avant-Guard gestalt. The Avant-Guard will be the 'active' side, and that's gone quite well, but I need a secondary/passive side and I'm looking for more utilitarian alternatives than "barbarian".

BAB 20 would be good but not required, but high Will would be a great boon. I can take increased skills/lv with intelligent mutation if need be so a 2 or 4+int class would be fine as well.

They stack, and can use Broken Blade, but the Myrmidon doesn't normally have access to the mystical maneuvers like Veiled Moon.

Tea of Transference (from the Alchemy Manual) allows trading Ki for 1 arcane pool point, 2 rounds of rage, 2 rounds of performance, one use of channel energy, 1 grit point, one use of smite evil, one extract slot at least 1 level lower than your highest, or one spell slot 2 levels lower than your highest.

Which means, iirc, you can generate infinite Ki with Ki Channel, which can be used to gain infinite uses of the rest of those provided you have a 2d6 Channel.

You also might be able to play a Sensei and use it to power your allies, but I'm not 100% sure if that works.

So my group is running: Those Guys That Kill All Demons, in which we attempt to kill all of the demons. Literally all of them.

Here's the cast:

Feanor the Elven Quickblade Impossible Bloodline Sorcerer Gestalt that has no shadow, has the mark of sacrifice, and whose village and wife were killed by demons along with his twin daughters being kidnapped
Jakel Ross the Systhesis Monk Gestalt that has a suit of demonic power armor for his summon after a demon killed his sister
Kaleth the Half Red Dragon farmer 16 year turned Barbarian that has his father's tooth as a sword. The sword is 16 feet long. He also has never had a friend and the other two party members are his friends, thus is socially autistic.

So far we have killed a Demon leading a squad of orcs, ogres, and trolls who were trying to burn Kaleth's house down. Then we accidentally invaded nearby city where all the nobles are vampires (demons made the vampiric curse in this), insulted the Elder Vampire's werewolf bodyguards, and then took one of their gargoyles hostage accidentally. The town guard weren't happy that we destroyed the gate after they sounded the alarm because they found out we were carrying around demonic guts to be used for magical equipment later on. The half dragon just push the gate up and broke it.We caused more damage to this town in an hour than the demons that are randomly spawning in it are.

What do you guys think?

Magic is actually the most powerful part of the game and gives you the most narrative control. And Slots are never a problem for Wizards since they usually just study, pput more spells in their book, and carry around dozens of scrolls for every occasion. They Other casters will also keep some of their slots open to prepare on the fly.
Really, Sorcerers and other Spontaneous casters are handicapped because they have a hard cap on what spells they can know or cast

Don't want to enforce "badwrong fun", but these kind of sentences usually make people that play pathfinder extensively consider not joining the game.

Pathfinder is fun once you learn the system. It gets really fun once you add 3rd party things like PoW, spheres, etc.

We recently switched our campaign to 5e for a single non-canon session and people were pretty bummed with it. And that is the only popular alternative. Don't have much experience with GURPS or Anima so can't comment on that, but Pathfinder is super fun once you get past the learning curve and your DM knows what he has to homebrew.

You don't go looking for spells once things happen, you know beforehand which spells might come in useful (There really aren't that many that are useful). If you seriously consider sitting down and looking for a random spell that may or may not exist if you come upon a challenge you are a really bad player. Not really in a mechanical point of view, but a social.

We've been playing a myriad of systems, SR5, A:BF, 4e, 5e, Maid RPG (don't ask), Sword World.

If you feel like you're wasting spellslots, you can just not leave them open. It's a choice. It's one of the things that makes Pathfinder fun.

You can either fill up all your spell slots with fireball and walk the path of explosions, or you can add in some dispel magic. Or you can leave slots open to decide later if you want either.

There's advantages and disadvantages to all of them. Choices is what makes Pathfinder Pathfinder and the reason my whole group dislikes 5e. My group likes 5e mechanically because it makes a lot more sense than Pathfinder, but there's just a lack of choices.

The few choices you have are meaningful, but there's just too few and it feels like you have to put considerably more effort into roleplaying to make yourself different from your friend who played fighter just last campaign and had almost the exact same character mechanically you have.

So we stay with Pathfinder, homebrew all the system's weaknesses away and are left with a super fun, choice-rich game. We've been playing for like 3 years over multiple campaigns and I don't think any character was the same mechanically yet.

Well, the easiest thing you can build and play in Pathfinder and can't fuck up at all is a twohanded melee.

0.5. Pick either Barbarian, Ranger, Cleric or Paladin
1. Put points in STR
2. Twohand weapon (1.5x STR mod to damage)
3. Get Power Attack (More damage at the cost of attack)
4. Do whatever else you want, amongst martials you can't really do much better in Vanilla. If the caster has no idea what you're doing you'll outshine him. If he kinda knows what he's doing, you'll both do well. If he actually knows what he's doing he'll win the game on his own, only needing you to clean up disabled enemies and tanking hits if the enemy wins initiative.

I personally advise against monk, rogue and fighter. Bard is definitely a jack of all trades and not the Master of all trades as he is in 5e.

My personal recommendation for a vanilla game is a cleric. Grab 14 wisdom, a bit of con and a ton of str, then grab Power Attack as your 1st level feat and you're set. Everything else you do will just be icing ontop, but this will allow you to heal allies, stand in melee, deal a fair amount of damage and have spells for utility. Super effective and hard to screw up if you can muster some critical thinking on what spells to pick.

Main problem with the iconic rogue is that, at first level, her feat of choice is DODGE. You know, not Weapon Finesse so she can actually hit anything with her rapiers or daggers.

She also has absolutely no way of actually injuring things like skeletons or the like until 12th-level when she finally adds things like holy water and silversheen to her inventory.
