Why is 2E art so superior to other editions' art?

Better budget than previous editions.

Digital art allows for a lot of shortcuts (cloning, etc.) that let mediocre artists compete with people who have a deeper technical knowledge, but it's cheaper to hire a 20-something with a tablet than to hire someone who paints by hand.

Hijacking slightly, but what are the advantages of 2e and its later Advanced (I think) books over 3.5 and 5? I've been looking for something different lately, and the art is fucking badass and wonderfully strange and makes me think of Conan for some reason.

They are fundamentally very, very different systems. Frankly it's hard to even compare them.
All the TSR versions of D&D are further to the side of rules-lite, and they don't* suffer from caster supremacy.
You have to put up with every aspect of playing using a separate resolution mechanic though.

Attacks are roll over, and subtract opponents AC from your target number.
Attribute checks and Saves are roll under, with things modifying your target number.
NWP (skill) checks are roll high, but under. Some things modify the target number, IIRC some things modify the roll?
Most racial abilities are "get specific values on a d6".
The list goes on and on.

The "original" D&D line was just D&D.
The revised edition was Advanced D&D (names changed to try and avoid the religious stigma at the time).

AD&D and AD&D 2e are nearly identical. 2e was written after a hostile takeover of TSR. It was only made to screw Gygax out of royalties.
Gygax wrote 1st edition, some guy worse at explaining things but who could organize material if his life depended on it wrote 2nd edition.
Make of that what you will, they're both pretty good. Also near identical.

Basic D&D separate product line, closer to original D&D.
It was developed simultaneously with AD&D til the end of TSR, but AD&D predates Basic.

This. Modern fantasy art is just fine actually. Wayne Reynolds is a singular blight upon fantasy art.

No muddy art. The colors and shapes are muddy in later editions.

Nah. It's not fine. Reynolds is kind of extreme example, an impersonation of the current trends. turned up to eleven, but it doesn't mean everything else around is fine.
I'll agree that a lot of modern art is good and even amazing and that the quality decrease has very little, if anything to do with dichotomy of traditional and digital formats. But this good art is not only minority in volume, but also mostly kept out from mainstream use (like being used as illustrations to popular systems, concept art for vidya etc.). Good art, you usually can find only in more niche games, or as independent work.

It'd be fine if either the heel of the hand was turned towards the viewer or the elbow was more prominent, casting a shadow over the forearm. It's the two combined that make it such an awkward pose.

These mistakes happen all the time, if you're not working from a model or their pose shifts over time, but they're very noticeable (or more accurately, very awkward looking when finally noticed) when they deal with hands or prominent joints because we're very aware of what the human body is supposed to look like.

AD&D was created as a separate line with a distinct name to screw Arneson out of royalties.

Holmes Basic was released shortly before the 1st AD&D book (the Monster Manual), and well before all of the core books were released. Granted, it only went up to level 3 and was as much of an OD&D starter set as it was a true Basic edition, but it still counts.
