why the fuck would anyone worship the ELEMENTS? That's just the building blocks of stuff. If you give them personality then they are not elements any more, they are gods!
>>
>>50469685
People anthropomorphise without necessarily creating a separate identity. E.g., fire being passionate, water being mercurial, earth being steadfast, and so on.

And that's not worth worshipping? Especially not in settings where elementals are inhumanly powerful creatures composed entirely of those elements? Do you really believe that a high ranking wind elemental wouldn't be worshipped like a god? Especially when the only thing setting them apart from low level god is a lack of divine ranks, with divine ranks being an arbitrary construct to begin with?

You can't just dismiss a single line concept you fucking idiot. Anything works with the right execution.

When most of your life is about dicking around your forest relaxing and learning things at what would be considered a lazy pace for humans, you don't tend to start adventuring till you've outlived most humans.

Like seriously, they probably do sword training like once a week for an hour. Then go have a 2 hour lunch, and then take a hike to visit that neat spot near the river for a light hearted game of mancala or three and then go searching for herbs for the end of the week mini feast.

Even if you ignore the basic elemental worship or the instances in which a simple lightning was interpreted as the doings of a huge man in the sky, I remind you that early greek philosophers (pre-Socrates) debated over which element was the basic elements.

Thales of Miletus claimed that water was the first and most important of the four elements because it was the amount of moisture (or absence of it) and the amalgamation of all other elements through it that determined matter.

Heraclitus of Ephesus claimed fire was the rightful one, as basic manifestation of change in all elements and matter. His ideas were a bit like the concept of energy transmission, though it was still too early to look at it with a scientific approach.

I don't remember who the guys respectively advocating earth and air were but I'm sure anyone can find out even on the most basic websites like wikipedia; unless they are OP, in which case they will be redirected to endless slideshows of cocks to lust upon.

>And then the cunt will roll out the worst notscottish accent to just take that dead horse out for another fucking beating.

What's ironic is that the "scottishness" of dwarves was likely based on the naavies, who were cheap irish laborers in the US and UK when lord of the rings was being written and would have frequently been seen around mines and in lumberyards of the period, and also have been fairly stunted in height due to the potato famines but fairly muscular and hardy from their daily work.

So remember to do "gruff irish" accents when doing dwarves, not "gruff scottish" accents, it's just unrealistic otherwise.

>Age: Az is the oldest member of the group. Keep this flexible until can determine the ages of the other characters, but is at least a thousand and at most 2.3 times the age of the next oldest character.

Very powerful quest-givers.

You know the kind, that can move things or make things appear and disappear with just a thought, or read your mind, or appear and disappear at will. They're usually introduced to your party by killing some strong people with ease, maybe even rescuing your party.

They're always smug and condescending but always see something "special" about your party and need them to do something for reasons they don't adequately explain, but you just trust them, they know best, and you can't refuse anyway.

Always come across as a DM power fantasy and take up all the spotlight whenever they're present.

I get gravity and darkness, and also darkness and void. But you have to bullshit a lot of fantasy babble to justify void and gravity being the same.
>>
>>50490516
Thought of another way, black holes are full of light and stuff, the complete opposite of void.

Heck, I'd just be happy if they rolled all the way back to something like the dwarves of norse mythology- crazy, pale little weirdos that are secretive, shy and make fantastic things deep underground.

In a pinch I'd also take Oglaf dwarves just for something different...
>>
>>50487409
They're better than elves which are just mary-sue versions of humans
>>
>>50492717
I hate to admit you're right, since I do like elves, but they are pretty much humans 2.0. Anything about them being distant, or slow to learn things, or anything doesn't really make up for the problem.

Though you could also argue that dwarves are mary-sue humans, because the only thing they really have against them is their height and vague stubbornness and respect for tradition, and hey, it's not like humans never had that.

Anon, if you can't understand why people (especially agrarian peasants) would worship aspects of nature that could prosper them or doom them in an attempt to convince them to do the former instead of the latter (e.g. a river can provide you with water for cleaning, cooking, you can put a waterwheel on it and use it to power a lumber mill, etc. OR it could dry up or flood your farm, thus fucking you over ) you are clearly in possession of a Dire Lack of Imagination. People worshiping powerful forces in the hopes of influencing them and/or their own fate is the foundation of religion. Element worship is just what you get before someone anthropomorphizes it and calls it Zeus or Poseidon or Vulcan or what have you.
>>
>people don't worship the elements

Seriously, why not? Every other fantasy setting has to explain gods being dicks, or being uncaring, or otherwise not being able to solve things with a wave of their hand. Elements are powerful, but fire won't go out of its way to save your family, no matter how much you pray.
>>
>>50492286
Those are in the setting and called gnomes.
>>
>the fact every single one of my characters either gets PTSD as a flaw or from a magical means

>>
>>50469685
But people DID worship elements....
>>
>>50490516
gravity is pretty entwined with mass anon. Black holes have a shit ton of mass
>>
>>50469685
The Forgotten Realms Svirfneblin worshiped the elements. Specifically stone. And you know what? When their gods appear to them they are made out of stone.

There's no reason why a fictional people can't worship one or more elements that are also a legitimately divine being at the same time.

I mean, shit, look at Zeus, god of thunder and lightning.

>"Alright, players, there are two major civilizations. Civilization A is a Utopian places to live which coincidentally shares all the same political and philosophical opinions that I do, while civilization B is a dystopian shithole which coincidentally shares the exact opposite opinions from me."

>GM retroactively alters how [class-feature/ability/skill/feat/item] works and does not allow you to alter them after said revision is made, thus leaving you with a wasted investment.

>Lore that is exactly identical to that of another setting just with names changed.

>GM explicitly taking sides over in-character discussions.

>Overuse of GM fiat and retcons, especially without consulting players.

>GM creates situations which requite out-of-character knowledge to handle effectively (i.e. bringing in monsters from alternate settings or even from tv/movies/video games, with specific weaknesses/resistance which cannot be overcome without metagaming)

>One particular race/civilization/nation/faction is richly detailed and fleshed out, with every opportunity taken to show how awesome and superior they are. Every other race/civilization/nation/faction gets a halfhearted 'oh, they exist too, I guess'.

I prefer them evil, but noble.

Like, they use slaves, assassinate each other, send cannon fodder into battle and torture people for fun (not to mention they eat the flesh of sentients) but they do have rules, and they aren't insane.

They can be likable, despite being evil

Zeus isn't "made of" thunder and there's nothing fundamentally binding him to it. He's just the greatest of the Titans (surviving) offspring and asserts his powers that way, by claiming the all-encompassing sky as his domain.

Animal people have the benefit of imaginability. There are certain connotations that come with different animals, like the behaviors we anthropomorphize onto them. We can express these concepts by making the animals humanoid without a need for great leaps in understanding.

Also there is a historical and mythological precedent to anthropomorphic animals.

To answer the OP question
>Humans are the real monsters and evil or something
in combination with
>Monsters and Demi-humans are actually the good guys and didn't do nothing or something
And not just in RPGs, i dislike those combined tropes in any medium. Can't explain why though.

>>
>>50495242

>>
>>50495188
I think I'm on the same page.

It's like a slap in the face-- the whole "humans were the monsters all along" trope is supposed to teach the moral that evil can come from anywhere, not just from stereotypes, and the "monsters were the good guys all along" trope teaches the same thing in reverse, but when they're put together it defeats the purpose. You just loop back to "this race is the bad guy, and this other race is the good guy" except ass-backwards from where it started, and you (the player/reader/audience) are now painted as the bad guy for no reason other than that's what medium says. It's just vaguely insulting for no tangible reason.

Yeah, you actually explained it better than me - just looping back the main conflict backwards and vaguely insulting for no tangible reason.
This is a reason why i dropped that Helck manga shortly after human-angels thing started. If the monsters are so affable and friendly, why humans are so bent on exterminating them in the first place? Maybe they explain it later, but i am already lost my interest.

>your dwarves don't sing drinking songs

>>
>>50495548
As far I read, it is because the toxic wasteland where the monsters live end up creating other, brainless ones that are super aggressive and end up attacking human territory, which leads to the humans blaming the monster for it. Of course, why the good monsters just don't flat out tell the humans that, or why insist in launching costly offensives against fortified monster positions in what is basically a irradiated wasteland rather then letting the monster horde attack the humans in prepared ground in the borders of the human territory is never explained.
>>
>>50495790
*or why the humans insist
>>
>>50495816
>>50495790
Because there's warmongers round the humans who are deliberately falsifying monster attacks to gain power and turn everyone into robotic angels without free will so they can rule everything.

They in one chapter captured some monsters and forced a toxic transformation on them so they would go berserk and murder a bunch of civilians as proof monsters and humans can't coexist. Basically it's all a big false flag thing.

Sky Burial. They put them out so that carrion birds can eat them, then place the dry bones in a pit that they don't cover. It's...actually a lot more hygienic than it sounds.
