Best way to do a Kights Templar based character in 5e.
Class, alignment, general playstyle that sort of thing.

Vengeance paladin. But, if you want to avoid Judge Dredding, play the softer side of justice
>One must temper judgement with mercy, else we betray our duty to help others who are in true need

Just play a fighter and roleplay
Mechanics aren't that important

And here we see what's so wrong with rollplayers these days, they need their characters spelled out for them. They know nothing of roleplay.
FFS
Take fighter
Take weapons
Buy heraldry for your church
Take some points/ranks/whatever in your religion lore/knowledge
That's it
That's a fucking knights templar, at least one of the lower ranking ones

Not really thinking about judgement, moreally zealous, with a focus of destroying the unholy and heretical.

I blame 3.PF's endless splatbook parade for it. A whole generation grew up thinking each thing in the book could be used for one and only one thing and if you wanted something else you needed a new book for it, and now that the market is shifting to a more write-once use multiple ways environment they're a bit lost.
Witness the screaming in any thread where builds that aren't cookie cutter copies of the Pathfinder Iconics of the same class name come up. They keep talking and I all I keep hearing is "All Wizards are bookworms because Ezren is a bookworm" and "Fighters are bad at ranged because Valeros is bad at ranged."
the knights templar were historically powerful bankers and land owners, and were actually a righteous organization despite their bad publicity
so play some rich professional, who tries to follow his mission to bring faith, and yet is mistrusted

Choose a suitable cleric
Choose a theurgist wizard
Choose a suitable monk
Choose a suitable fighter with religious fluff
Heck, even a barbarian. 'zealot' is a barbarian archetype.
Or, obviously, a paladin.
Pick your poison, damnit.
Heck, even ranger works.

LG or LN fighter or Paladin, GreatSword, Full Plate. Kill anyhing that disagrees with you.
FFs why are you asking us for advice on such basic 5e shit. I didn't think I needed to explain stuff so obvious.

Everybody here is an idiot and doesn't know what the Templars were really like.
1) Assimilate all the money you can find on your adventures.
2) Become moneylender.
