I'm trying to make sense of this convoluted mess from the last few threads.

I think this CYOA could use a few revamped prerequisites. Advanced Theatre isn't terribly useful unless you're going Meteorspam, since you can't get it and any of the big-ticket powers, and I genuinely don't get the point of Anthropology.

Anyway, I think this is one of the viable builds given the unusual mix of prerequisites. Pinnacle human ability, powerful armor and weaponry, magic shields and grenades, and a kickass fembot to fight alongside.

Pre-Med has the shittiest research project reward, since you have to kill something with the scalpel to learn its weaknesses. So you have to kill something with a tool unsuited for combat in order to learn how to easily kill things. I sure hope you have friends that will help you with live captures.

On the other hand, medical knowledge is amazing to have, for a variety of reasons. So maybe it balances out.

Definitely one of the better CYOAs I've seen, though.

It is really not a bad tool to use. Many creatures, such as humans, can be killed in a few seconds using only a scalpel. Other creatures need only to be decapacitated or wounded for you to finish the creature off with the scalpel.

Yes, but that requires careful planning. You can kill many things quickly with a scalpel... if you know where to cut them. Which if you know that, you won't be benefiting terribly much from the scalpel's ability.

I think you mean incapacitated, but yes, that's precisely why I mentioned having someone help you with live captures.

It requires more setup than the other rewards, all of which give their full benefit immediately.

Though the architect's hammer requires finding something you want to completely demolish, you at least have the capacity on hand as soon as you find something.

Classics' research project is also lacking a bit, mostly due to the limited options available.

Why are there so many fractional stat adjustments? Also, using the same name but a different scale for stats for players and their creatures is confusing and pointless, just make the human average 10 and use an absolute scale. Good CYOA, I rate it 3 hamburgers.

Advanced physics is a good inspiration for sci-fi CYOAs. You could have a set of choices about 'how to create a universe':

Do you want to:
A. Use Superdeterminism: You set the fates of everyone and everything, yet they have no idea and argue about it.
B. Use Copenhagen QM: Nothing really exists until a creature interacts with it: you can control background things in real time as long as creatures don't understand it.
C. Use Newtonian Mechanics: You set collisionary starting states that you don't know the end result of, but can always add more states to collide with later.

With Djinns, if they're going to screw with your wishes, Loving is probably always the best.

The brick formations on the suit look just like IRL explosive modules, though the artist may not have intended that.

One of the major tipoffs though is that ablative armor upgrades into it. The capacitive plasma formation IRL armor isn't usually defined as wholly ablative.

But yeah, I'd say assume it uses a directed pressure wave to detonate or deflect inbound projectiles. Shrapnel might be dangerous to you in close quarters.

Though, odds are you could find an engineer who would put special surprises in it for you.

One of the most aggravating things about the author was they did not understand their creation and how we responded to it. He was considering a nerf on architecture because "too many people were taking it" but he showed that he did not understand why. As someone who wanted to be the master craftsmen that the major was made for (and thus did the research project) I was pissed at his proposals. On the topic of the hammer though I think people have not always thought it through in terms of the majors intent. Yes it is a useful tool in its can destroy anything capability, but its real use is for crafting. Lets say I have some really hard elder dragonbone, with the hammer I might be able to pulverize it down for use in alchemy, or if I have a lump of adamantium I have the only object around that could possibly be used to make it into a sword. I gather it refers to an element of the Hunter CYOA by Bliss. As opposed to the computer game, which I imagine they're discussing for fun.

In the CYOA, it's a regular PVP event, while the rest of the time the hunters are usually PVE.

This caused some eyes to roll back and some hands to shake, possibly among 'carebears'. Nonetheless, I didn't find much wrong with the PVP. It was an entertaining thing to consider when building a character, as opposed to just hunting X monster which might be monotonous itself.

I'm going to have to take some serious credits and missions if I want to build the rest of a fleet and get a good crew.

The basic plan is to hit hard and fast, relying on a very skilled pilot and the ship's unmatched maneuverability to maintain positional superiority during the fight. I figure the low tracking of railguns is highly mitigated by putting them on a spinal mount; they don't need to track much when I'm pointing the ship right at the target. The Columbus mod makes for a nice combo with the cloaking system as well. The fighter can cloak to break weapons lock, change direction, then uncloak to attack from an unexpected angle while it takes even longer for its enemies to lock on. The three drones also add a significant amount of added firepower and flexibility. One weakness of the ship is its relative flimsiness. 12 shields seems decent but overall it needs to rely on just not taking big hits in the first place.

I don't know if anyone remembers but the fight (this go around) started when someone said they thought MH was the "perfect" CYOA. I may be ok with Bliss's ultimate decision on the culling, but in such an argument it is a huge detraction for me and those who decided to fight about it again. MH may be in my top 100 cyoas but it is about 30 slots lower as a result of the culling.

This does de-rate Traveller for me. It always seemed to be a bit too 'aimless'.
The main interesting part was considering the skills and companions.

Things like the old 'wizard gives you a domain to rule' often had much more incentive to do them and min/max, rather than just being a list of possibly cool things.

Even by that measure the culling means MH is disqualified from even being in the running IMO. And that is not based on my personal dislike of the culling but what it does for balance mechanics. The skill set is very good but in a pvp setting it has to be perfect and the amount of hard counters to certain things makes for nasty issues (mages should buy the exemption period). Balancing the favor cost is harder when half of the player base will sink 25 favor on something and half won't. The delicate balance between making sure both sides feel ok about the cost is hard and frankly I feel that is where the real issue lay. It felt too costly to the anti-pvp base and yet a cost reduction would have pissed off the pro-pvp base.

Sometimes I struggle with pricing options, because it can be hard to objectively weigh them. There's always at least a little favoritism, with an option I particularly like seeming more important than it might to someone else.

That's something I worry about doing, too. Worry I might make my own preferences overpowered, so I nerf it, which just makes it underpowered. Then I worry about it not being worth taking.

TL;DR: I am probably too balance obsessed. Even when I don't aim for 'perfect' balance, I stress out over shit like is option A too expensive, is option B a point too cheap, etc.
