What are the limits of what can be defined as a traditional game?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Confession: I am an unabashed questfag. I understand why the decision was made to give quest threads their own board, but I still miss them here sometimes.
On a related note, do you consider play-by-post games to fall under the definition of traditional games? I thought it was inventive for posters to create their own roleplaying games using the format of forum threads, but when I stopped to think about it, I began to wonder what exactly defines play-by-post games as traditional, but quest threads as.. something else. Does something only require collaborative make-believe storytelling and a set of rules to bind it together to be in the realm of traditional gaming, or is there something more?

Literally every topic imaginable, and I mean LITERALLY ANYTHING, is a traditional game, except when it isn't.
For example, a music album is a traditional game: https://boards.fireden.net/tg/thread/50376726/#q50376726
There is no pattern to what is on topic and what is off topic. Some anons have to follow the rules, and other anons don't have to follow the rules. /tg/ is just /b/ without porn. Abandon all hope and all reason.

The problem with quest threads isn't that they potentially traditional games. Some of them most certainly are. Its that they numbered a third of the board, and no real connection to the rest of the /tg/ community. They're harder to understand then a general for a game you don't play. I say this as someone who ran a quest.

I wouldn't be happy with someone running their weekly DnD game on here either, it's just too exclusionary.

That said, play by post games are traditional games, and a thread about sites or ways to play play by post is totally welcome.

Take a look a this. You're allowed to post threads that are a single line of greentext saying ">a thing happened", except when you aren't. You're not allowed to ask what the difference is.
What is off topic? Whatever the mod decides is off topic at that precise moment, which is essentially random. Rules? What rules? You suffer for the mod's amusement.

That's a fair point that I hadn't considered, thank you.

Two anons do the exact same thing. One of them is banned. The other is not.
It's not about rules. It's not about the content of your posts. If you get on the mod's shit list, he will ban you constantly just because he can.

Maybe it's a different mod, maybe they weren't active at the time. The posting times of these are also different, and in th ecase of the second one, SEVERAL days.

If the mod likes you, then go ahead and post your play-by-post RPG threads, your literature threads, your ">a thing happened" threads, your "why are elves always XYZ" threads, and all sorts of OBJECTIVELY NOT TRADITIONAL GAMES threads you want. It doesn't matter. It has never mattered. /tg/ has never actually been the traditional games board, and "off topic" is absolutely meaningless.

Do different mods enforce different rules as written?
>>
>>50411689
I wasn't debating the rules of the board when I made this thread, I was inquiring what the people here consider to be a traditional game in the broader sense.
>>
>>50411689
Also, by this definition, a play-by-post game is not a traditional game, but I'm not sure I agree with that.
>>
Is it just one guy who's butt hurt about quest threads not being allowed (not saying it's OP) or are there multiple people posting on this thread about how it's mod persecution?

The problem isn't quest threads in and of themselves. The problem was that they took over the board and generally made it impossible to talk about anything else
>>
>>50411805
I'm the guy posting screencaps. I'm not OP, and I don't care about quests one way or the other.
>>
>>50411535
are mods this board Dms?
is the purpose of the game to try to make a post as close as possible to being ban worthy without being banned? making as many off topic comments as possible without being called out for it? what are the rules of the /tg/ game?
>>
>>50411559
It's actually the only point that I think matters. Quests are /tg/, at least some are. But they are in essence private games, which are a waste of limited space on a Polynesian Surf Board.
>>
>>50411341
The thing is, /tg/ isn't for traditional games themselves.
/tg/ is for DISCUSSING traditional games.
>>
>>50412174
This is honestly a stupid a statement as can be said on /tg/

Playing full-on Games in a thread may be innapropriate, but I see no reason why Freeform RP's, especially those with a long tradition like the Mages' guild, should not be played on here.
>>
People in this thread didn't really discuss the topic I was hoping for. They just opted to whine about the mods instead. What a shame.
>>
>>50411588
This happens. I got on a mod's shit list once. It was the mod that was trying to force Kromgol as a meme. I questioned the veracity of the character sheets by pointing out that they were 1e sheets filled out with 3.x rules (+numbers for saves, BAB, and so on). I caught a two consecutive 3-day bans for it, he used 3-day bans because then I could not contest them through the standard channels. At 12:01am of the day the the first ban expired the second one started. I raised a stink in IRC and the mod got shitcanned over it as he hit at least three other people the same way.
