An ancient chinese version is called Military Chess, "Luhan Qi" (lit. Land Battle Chess). It is considered slightly inferior to Weiqi or Xiangqi (which I think you guys call Shogi), but very enjoyable.

I think I prefer it to stratego, slight differences in play afaik, and the mahjong-like tiles are so very satisfying.
