It's over 1 AU wide and growing (at an accelerating rate). Like the other anon said, that was an empty space the size of Jupiter.
>>
>>50367798
Pretty sure Jupiter used to be there, until the Builders finished breaking it down for raw material.
Also, on Blame and So On Nihei says that the City extends to "the edges of the Solar System"

Both.

It is so much more massive than a Ringworld.
Its area could house every world setting you know, and it would have plenty of empty space.

I'm half tempted to assume it could even house the Imperium of Man's population, but I'm terrible at math.

It has more surface area than all planets in the galaxy together. It's layered like a russian doll after all
>>
The regular symmetrical outer portions of the City are roughly 1.6 billion km in diameter (10 AU) with sol nestled comfortably at her core. With a volume of roughly 2 octillion km^3 she boasted an exterior solid surface area of 8,000 quadrillion km^2 (some fifteen billion times the surface area of Earth). Merely travelling around the circumference of this shell at lightspeed would take four and a half hours, a radio transmission travelling from one pole to the other could take up to just over an hour and a half. Assuming the city has a disproportionate density equal to a mix of 75% sea level air and 25% steel (although the sheer density of her internal layers would suggest otherwise) the total mass of the definite portions of the City would equal to 40,018,750,000 solar masses.

That's right, it's easier to measure the conservative mass of this structure in units of measurement that multiply the mass of our sun billions of times over. In fact it's so massive that it dwarfs the supermassive black hole located at the center of the Milky Way galaxy by a hundred times over. Even if humanity began the reckless construction of the City for a sustainable period of expansion within the space of 10,000 years the Builders would have to assemble 1.5 quadrillion cubic kilometers of material per second. To simplify that, that's the equivalent of strip mining, smelting and re-assembling a solid iron ball equal in volume to Jupiter every single second for a duration of time comparable to the span between Earth as of 2014 and the rise of agriculture circa 8,000 BCE.

Future!Cibo spends ten years waiting/searcing for Killy in Toha Heavy Industries.

This.

A proper Blame! random encounter table would be something like "roll 1dBillion and 90% of the cases nothing happens for several decades".

A smart GM would take the several decades of silent and undisturbed travel as downtime between adventures and simply skip over them.

Goddamit. Now I'm thinking about Undying again.
Undying's about vampires, but it is relevant here because of the different time scales it uses. Undying has two game phases, Nightly play, and downtime. Nightly phase is the high action game, and lasts in in-fiction time for maybe a night to a few days I suppose. Downtime is when everyone's plotting their next move, moving the pieces for when the next Nightly phase begins. Down time can last for in-fiction decades, or even centuries.

If the elevator is the size of a small rust belt city and has a feral tribe of cyborgs who execute people by pressing them feet first through a hole cut in the side so that they're ground to a thin smear of biomass over the course of a few days it might be spiced up somewhat.

Blame! is easily big enough for that.

Different themes. True science fiction is what's called speculative fiction. A fairytale with laser guns or some sound science here and there might borrow some surface aspect from scifi, but it' still a fairytale.
>>
>>50369496
I keep meaning to get around to running a short game in this. It's extraordinarily difficult to conceive of a good campaign idea though.

The one I came up with was that the PCs would be randoms in some section of the megacity a few decades after BLAME!, and basically receive a prophetic dream hailing the coming of a messiah who will lead the humans on a crusade to excise the silicon life (Which they barely understand being podunk nowhere scrappers).

The bulk of the game would basically be about skulking around trying not to get killed, trying to convince everyone the messiah is totally real, and organising all the disparate settlements in the area into a coordinated militant church that is ready to burn the silicon life society out of their homes the moment Killy turns up with the net terminal genes and fixes that floor's safeguards.

Wherein even the most plebian bookworm of a silicon lifer is more than a match for a single PC in combat.
>>
>>50369087
No good rules for getting harmed with overly powerful firearms, anyway. Rifts has MegaDamage, but instead of thinking about it normally, the authors decided "hurr, if ur using SDC (standard damage, aka every human/normal thing that you could find today) u die instantly" which leads to weird things like blasting someone's toe off with a lasergun looking thing somehow kills the guy.
>>
Man, this is reinvigorating my interest in an old book I had half written.

Especially the massive megastructures in space. That book showed some huge things and implied even larger ones. Like bigger than Ringworld. Would be very interesting to run a game rooting around the remnants of one of these titanic megastructures. Lots of different environmental problems to deal with, plus the regular problems of abandoned stations.
>>
>>50372904

I'm pretty certain that that's a reference to Cordwrainer Smith.
>>
>>50375433
I wish I could get into Cordwainer. I read a few shorts from the anthology on Amazon and they were pretty neat but I didn't feel the sense of awe I felt like other people got. I read at least Scanners Live In Vain, the one with the starship captain and his girl who grow old on purpose to be with each other, and the one where they have cat-brains running their anti-space dragon weapons.
>>
>>50375546
You read the one where Rambo whines that he was tricked into temporarily becoming a god and they send him to planet reverse sexual harassment to shut him up?
>>
>>50375788
I don't think so. I did read one where there was a colony where the environment killed everything female so they invented male pregnancy to survive, and I think there were cat people in it.
>>
>>50374528
Neither. The infrastructure worked too well.
First the safeguard does its job and kills everyone without net genes. Then the net chaos comes and all lose theirs and are targets now.

Ah, the one where a Go-Captain defends himself against the M-preg barbarians by traveling back in time and seeding their moon with cat people.

We later learn that he was sentenced to exile on planet Gurochan for creating those cat-aliens.
>>
>>50376003
Yeah! Forgot about the time travel, that was a neat touch. There's something wistful about Cordwainer's writing style that I could never get over, like I was reading his descriptions of the real stories that he's very sorry about having lost.

>>
>>50369411
It's kind of like an oldschool silent film; pretty much the diametric opposite of Initial D's overexposition.

You basically just sit back, make sure you've got at *least* half the series with you in any one sitting, and just watch the nearly-silent protagonist as he takes this adventurous, deadly walk to the ends of the solar system.

I can't guarantee you'll like it since there's not really anything else quite like it, but I thought it was fucking wonderful and actually tells a lot of story and lore - much of it without a word - if you carefully look back again.

Scenery porn at its brightest.

>>
>>50374288
Good idea actually. A kind of science fiction Banner saga would be pretty excellent.

I had the notion of the looming messiah as a thing because otherwise there is:
a) OOC knowledge that there is absolutely no hope of anything ever being okay no matter how well the PCs do
b) Not much reason for PCs to take risks the way that PCs... do. You'd have to be a real fool to take the 3 week trek over to the next town to convince them that everyone should pool their resources for the greater good, when there's like a 10% chance each way that you run into either silicon life and get slashed to bits by some bullet-time edge-lord, or safeguard and get buried under a few thousand iRobots crawling out of the goddamn walls.
c) No real sense of climax near the end unless things are real contrived. I figured that having Killy turn up puts all the lurking things on that floor on an incredibly tight timer, to try and shank the net terminal gene holder, while the rag tag band and their allies desperately try to stall them long enough for the safeguard to be re-activated as allies.

I might try and combine the two.

Technologically hand-waved fantasy is space opera, which is enjoyed by GRRM fans more than by Greg Egan fans but is found in your library with the rocketship or Saturn sticker on it. There's a very good reason fantasy and science fiction are sold together and detective fiction and thrillers have their own sections.

Eh, the Netsphere was so vast that multiple seperate human species developed within it. Plenty of them were apparently left alone long enough by silicon life and safeguard for that to take place. The more advanced parts also could hold out against silicon life attacks for a long time.

So really, if you aren't the Electric Fishers,, chances are that you're going to have a somewhat normal life beneath a steel sky with floating laserbabies protecting your airship ports.

The core of The City is basically a memory editor for the universe: so long as it keeps its focus up, it can keep pumping save states into an individual like Killy to keep him intact even if he's otherwise in a situation where by all means he would have dematerialized - like being stuck inside a star.

It's very different from the usual Nihei product. It embrances some anime tropes but with a Nihei-ish spin (e.g. guy takes wrong door and finds himself in girl's changing room, girl punches him. Except that girl is a gen-enginered supersoldier, so she breakes his skull , complete with glorious xray scan, and he goes to the hospital. Surprisingly gruesome actually).
It's pretty good, lots of scenary porn. The ending is pretty annoying. The anime gets lots of shit because it's cgi.

Tsumugi gets a human-sized body and colonizes the earthlike planet with Nagate, the third-gender girl turns into a guy to get the executive officer girl, and the plot thread with the Gauna trying to communicate with humanity is completely abandoned.

In the thread. It's CG like Sidonia but they're trying harder with the cel-shading.

No one there is human, they're all capable of punching through your skull.

>I legitimitely can't tell if you guys are bullshitting or not

It's a universe in which the Kamen Riders almost started an uprising because advances in radiation shielding made cyborgs non-essential to deep space travel and where sending in dragonfuckers is how they regularily deal with hostile megafauna.
>>
>>50381152
That sounds like a pretty shitty ending.
>>
I wish Sidonia had stayed creepy. I wonder what happened.
>>
Say what you will about the art detail, Sidonia had parts with excellent atmosphere.

I know, I know, it's just, it looks so uncomfortable.

You know when you're one-handing a really really fat book, or some block that's just a little bigger than your hand can properly grasp, so you're just going full-pressure with the fingers...

I mean, imagine that right into your ribs. That's even worse than just poking them.
>>
Can someone post Nihei's porn pictures?
>>
>>50379832
Well, clearly not this. Scifi is "Fiction, but like realistic fiction that could happen, or outlandish fiction I like. Anything else is just fantasy." Or so I've understood the definition.

Heard he started KoS because of her, too. She wanted him to do something nice, like Attack on the Titan.

cyberpunk.asia has it. He just drew 4 pages (assuming they have everything made by him)

To the average person fantasy is typically past-focused and sf is future-focused. So Harry Potter is fantasy because they wear comfy scarves and wave wands but take the exact plot and world and make it all metal and call magic psionics and it's sci-fi.

Imagine living in that place in a time when it's fully populated.
The sheer mass of people, the smells, the sounds.
