ITT we list things long term DMs do when they finally get to play
>Unintentionally import canon from your setting when making a character
>Think about how you'd run a combat encounter differently, or take notes if it's run better than yours
>Wonder about the structure of the campaign and overall plot
>"This is a good NPC but they seem a little flat, if I were running them..."
>Add new details to a location by describing your character's interactions with it
>immediately try to figure out how to kill the GMPC
>This isn't exactly kosher RAW
>Ah well, I'd allow it so I'll assume my DM will too!

>It's been so long since I played...I'm sure I will fuck this up...
>Oh, I haven't fucked up yet...How can that be? This is unsettling.
>Everything is okay. OMG WHATS GOING ON.
*fucks everything up*
>Oh this is familiar, Okay. all's good

>>Wonder about the structure of the campaign and overall plot
I've never been a DM and I do this for both tabletop and video games. I love trying to figure out where a story is going and what the tone and rules of the setting are.

This is how I'd run it, so I'm sure I'll be fine doing X
>X pisses off everyone forever
Oh god what did I do?!

My unfortunate experience:
>c-could I say your world's like this?
>o-okay, thanks
>actually it's your world I don't wanna steamroll it...
>sorry

This backfires for me a lot. I always end up playing with people who, lucky for them, are not Forever GMs.
This also means they haven't "polished their craft"/thought about what their job is.
So I always get some disjointed trash story full of rails that goes in either a horribly predictable direction or goes absolutely nowhere.
It hurts.
