My best advice for dice is to just go ahead and buy one of the $20 bags of random dice, with my recommendation being Wiz Dice over Chessex, since Wiz Dice comes in groups of sets, while Chessex is random and might only have one or two complete sets. There's bound to be a bunch of ugly sets in the Wiz Dice bag, but I did find three sets I really liked and eight or so that were not bad.

Buying dice piece by piece can get expensive, and while your shopping list might only run you about $10, the $20 bag is going to not only be more dice than you'll ever need, it will have enough to share amongst your friends. You can even give one of the ugly sets to the guy you don't even like all that much.

Typically gives you everything you will need, with lots of extras if you tend to lose them.

I buy a new pound every few years as my supply gets whittled down.
