HFY is just some aspects of the better part of some of the old sci-fi. Like Sheckely, Anderson, Heinlein, some Dick or Clarke.

It has basis in that childhood feeling when you first read about space exploration and sheer magnitude of not the universe, but Solar System, but also about how complicated is trade and production system by which our everyday objects are made and shipped over a whole planet, that few pages in children history book earlier we barely known, in big, colorfull books with big captioned pictures. How complicated and awesome machine is the car you drive everyday. That while we do not have claws and fur, the gepard is quicker, elephant stronger, we still are masters of known life and keep them in the city zoo you were in for amusement.

It's a bit childish, but at last not in the shitty one-sided hippie wank of Avatar. And we are on a board that brands us as childish loosers in eyes of many anyway.

In fiction other species that are good are often poor man's angels, some mary sue elves that have higher inteligence, longer livespans and are just better than us at everything. In the best case scenario we end up as a inept jack of all trades with prize for trying, or becoming ,,oh, so great" only by some stupid ,,it was in your heart" bullshit.

If some of those races are best at something, we sometimes deserve it too. We can be plot twist, even better if we are, for we are mostly protagonists anyway. We have nothing but speculation about potential other life in the universe and some, even all, of our concepts should be puzzling! Thinking that we may get better in for example, in warfare (as most of this stories pinpoints only that anyway) is absolutly resonable.

The chief problem in writing HFY is that most people aren't aware that they're writing it. 90% of science fiction that isn't just autistic technobabble for the sake of autistic technobabble is some sort of exultation of the human spirit and human qualities over the Other.

Star Trek. It's a story about a multicultural communist society that has finally destroyed Capitalism going out into space and being morally superior to other species. That's literally the plot of Star Trek. It's a utopian and frankly unrealistic perspective of a future based on the ideals of a far-left ideologue. It is, in fact, no different from the most fascist reading of Starship Troopers: A society that ended representative democracy and was better for it.

To say "yeah, we abolished all free enterprise and currency and built this one-world government without nations and it's working great" is no different from saying "yeah, our military junta overthrew the government and established Sparta Nova where only soldiers have a say in the political process," both are essentially glorification of an ideological stance.

/tg/ HFY has the problem of choosing things to glorify that don't really resonate with people. Who cares if we breathe oxygen? Who cares if we might be stronger than Martians because we have more gravity? That doesn't speak to the soul, it merely tickles the edges of a nascent desire for physical superiority. You should know by now that people care FAR more about being able to claim moral superiority than being physically superior.

Ergo, if you want to make HFY work you have to push a value as being mankind's greatest source of strength, and the more emotionally manipulative you are about it, the better.

I recall one story about food. Basically an alien sampling Earth cuisine. Its one of my favourites because it wasn't "we are so much better" wanking, it was just an alien species that didn't really do spices sampling the different foods that humans concoct. It wasn't even about pride in that we cook with spices. Just taking a different perspective on something humans generally take for granted.

I think that people want their fiction to be very grandiose. But sci-fi tends to shine when it puts a spotlight on little things. Its a genre that is perfectly suited to highlighting generally ignored things about being a human. I think thats where some of these HFY stories excel. They highlight little things that could possibly be kind of amazing to another species.

The humans in Star Trek, not Star WARS, are just people who are in a time where aliens are commonplace, and scifi is the norm.

There are occasional ayylmaos that detest a few humans for being inferior in a catagory, mostly emotional restraint and overboard curiosity, but no FUK DA HOOMANZ mentality in general.

Mostly, it's starfleet in particular, and those who work with them. Being human is just a small detail in that regard. If anything, humans are rather respected for being a species with courage and sense of duty, while also being a young species with rapid advancement in terms of Galaxy-wide view. HFY isn't anything except a writing prompt. Trying to call it a genre, trying to smush and squeeze the works of other authors to fit the concept, all of that is ridiculous, because HFY isn't serious and is in fact largely stupid and ridiculous.

I say it's stupid because it only works if you forget something or purposefully ignore it. What that may be differs from story to story, but usually it's just ignoring the idea that it's not a human's humanity that makes them great, but an incredibly complex series of virtues. For the people who remember the virtues, they tend to forget all but one, and they often also end up forgetting all the flaws of humanity as well.

It's a writing prompt for amateurs that asks them to figure out how to exalt humanity, mostly for the primitive ego-strokes they get. To them, humanity is like a football team, and their fanfiction is oftentimes just as pathetic as a Brown's fan writing a story about how his team wins the superbowl each year.

HFY has always been a dumb writing prompt, and the idea that it was made to address the nonexistent problem that humans don't win enough is laughable and once again trying to make this thing more than it is. It's just the people who always pick human in every game that has that option, parading around like a bunch of drunk tailgaters and cheering whenever humanity scores a touchdown.

The problem with all these races, the media and culture they've created are too complex, slow to be made, hard to understand or extremely dangerous.

The humans have mastered creating videos, music and games at an alarming rate. It may not be able to compete in quality. But quantity is a quality of its own. Why is it that human music has spread so far and is enjoyed by almost everyone? Well, its simple and catchy. Why are that human holovids are a major seller? Well its because the plot is simple and easy to understand, every race can associate with it.

Compared to other animals, humans don't actually fight each other that much. Apes and elephants kill their own all the time. The concept of a 'peaceful' lifeform is pretty absent from nature, or at least it's mutually exclusive with the intelligence an alien species would require in order to build their civilisation.
