add to that very sorcerous doors, perfectly imitating bird cries, and other stuff
and, you know, not being nordic scots, apart from names (which are jsut aliases they take when travelling among humans)

and that's just in plain sight

also, off the top of my head, there were quite awesome dwarves in Dragonsbane series by Barbara Hambley. They didn't like the light, so were very rarely seen aboveground (before being evicted by a dragon, obviously), they didn't allow humans beyond the first hall, except for a very small number of children they took as apprentices in magic, making them a bit like Fair Folk. and their magic was very different (and presumably more powerful) than human one, capable even of contending with dragons.

Tad Williams "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" series have a rather interesting take on dwarfs, though they ain't exactly short.

The dwarves in Crimson Tide killed their cruel creator god and now gather gold hoards (which are spiritually potent) and venerate their ancestors in to hopes of resisting the depredations of said god's fractured remains. Each of the other races also reflect a different approach to the existence of the afterlife.
