Never have played DnD before in my life. I have some friends who wanted to try it out too. Where do we begin? Our DM had ideas for a world/lore but as far as gameplay goes we don't know how anything works.

Just read a rulebook and you should be fine, any system tends to explain the game experience pretty well.

Grab a book, break shit down with the other players as you go. Take notes.

Go to the 5e thread. Download the monster manual, players handbook, and dungeon masters guide. Then download the lost mines of phandelver module. Whoever is DMing should read it.
Everyone run through the character creation part of the PHB.
After that, read up on combat and maybe print out some cheat sheets, there are a ton of rules for combat.
Finally, if you're playing online, use roll20. Tons of resources to show you how. It's great.
The dm should understand how everyone's characters work so it doesn't interrupt the flow of the game.
