Is call of cthulhu a fun game?

Yes

Assuming, of course, you come prepared with three character sheets prepared for the first session. You'll need all of them before the night is through
>>
why do you need 3 characters? do you just die all the time in that game?
>>
>>50323811
It's a game where if you take a hit, that hit is going to be with you for the rest of the game. Be it mental or physical. The lethality is a bit exaggerated but it's a good idea to have a backup sheet
>>
>>50323811
Only if the players are stupid and don't realize the game isn't DnD. You rarely need more than one character I've found.
>>
>>50323269
Too fun for its subject matter.

It encourages people to think of Mythos monsters as pokémons; and it treats sanity as a secondary health stat that gets magically drained by things that would normally not cause insanity in Lovecraft's stories.

As a result, most games devolve into "hey let's try to kill that cool monster without looking at it!"
>>
how does the game play? is it like just D&D with less magic and shit
>>
>>50323269
Assuming you go in with the right mindset, sure. If not, then it will just seem hamfisted and pointless.
>>
>>50323269

Yes, but it's become harder to run as Lovecraft has entered the mainstream* and Cthulhu has become a kitsch object.

*I do not mean that in the sense of REEEE NORMIES, I mean that the ideas in the stories are now better-known and players tend to be much more genre-savvy in a setting that withers and dies under too much of that.

You don't have to break it down. The new fanbase is trash that dulled down the subject matter for the wider audience. It was a proper niche title that attracted devoted members and once the memes came up cthulhu became another slenderman, well technically he was the first but he just resurfaces infrequently.

Damn

It *sort of* dies if they're too savvy.
Options to combat this include:
* Players who act like Delta Green agents are paranoid/racist and jumping at shadows. Culminate story with authorities buttfucking them or psychotic meltdown
* Refusal to engage in adventure results in horror pursuing them, angry relatives taking it out on them, or armageddon
* Over-reliance on magic and mythos tools results in a kindly mentor taking them in and teaching them. Turns out it's Nylarthotep, no anon you were the cultists
* Scooby-doo plots with fakery

It's a game about being a normal person with some information on spooky stuff. It's focused around investigation.

Most of the time, avoid any sort of fight since you'll hardly succeed and most likely get yourself killed/insane
>>
>>50323269
Sure, but you need a Dm that can actually pull off paranoia or, at the very least, mystery pretty well, and those are few and far between.

Also, a bunch of skills are extremely less valuable than others, and given that both combat and investigation skills share the same points pool, there's a pretty significant chance that you'll be a glorified meatshield (as if that isn't what eventually all characters turn into)
>>
>>50323269

Not as fun as it should be. The BRP system is a poor fit for the genre. It needs a system that cares about mental states, something like Unknown Armies.
>>
>>50323269
The sanity-regaining mechanics are hilarious. If It remember correctly, if you can't afford a therapist or don't want to get locked in an asylum, you have the opportunity to become a hobo. You gain like 1 sanity a month for every hobo friend you have, and must risk a 5% monthly chance of dying from exposure or disease

It is certainly my favorite tabletop game. The 'real world' setting means it is easy to get new people into (and also to make appropriate props and in character documents etc), and although the rules are not perfect they feed well into developing atmosphere, which is what the game is all about. It is very easy to do badly but a little work goes a long way. Also it just isn't some players cup of tea but if everyone is on board with playing a horror game it is really great.
