dear /tg/,

How do turn-based games (liek Chess or M:tG) deal with the problem/advantage of playing first or second?

Has there been any successful system where everyone's turns are played out simultaneous?

Some games have people alternate phases, chopping a single turn up. Most RPGs and wargames have people roll for initiative.

For years in MtG the player who goes first does not draw a card on their first turn. Players are said to be "on the play" (going first) or "on the draw" (going second). Going first is still seen as a modest advantage and players winning a dice off will usually (But not always depending on deck and format) choose to go first. For "best of" series in tournament play, after the first game the loser gets choice of first or second.

There are games (Diplomacy off the top of my head, but there are others) that have simultaneous turns with hidden orders. Players write down orders ahead of time and then they are revealed and resolved simultaneously.

Simultaneous resolution was popular with wargames back in the day. It has its own oddities versus the ones you see in the usual "I go U go."
Recently cutting edge wargames have been all about reaction/activation systems, like the one popularized by Two Hour Wargames, wherein you activate a unit, and as you make your move, your opponent has opportunities to react with his units.

Tak is a board he game where during each player's first turn, they place an opponent's piece instead of their own.

Battletech has very robust support for simultaneous firing, and it's piss-easy to add simultaneous movement.
