Where the fuck does the aesthetic come from anyway?
I mean, I can say "Witch Hunter" or "Vampire Hunter" to anyone and they will immediately know what I'm talking about; the puritan hat, the leather overcoat, the belts and buckles, crossbows and knives. It's so pervasive in popular culture, but why?

It comes from Solomon Kane stories by the creator of Conan my young retarded friend. The late, great Robert E. Howard.
Gee, I fucking wonder.

it's almost like there were historical witch hunters who dressed this way and people have been writing about and dressing up as them ever since

Vidya and internet.
In the olden days pre internet video games were fun but as engrossing.
You had to be truly dedicated to RPG gaming or hide it well as riducule was real.
I learned about being a nerd from older nerds at the FLGS. Books, comics, movies, other games. We didn't have forums everything was word of mouth. I met Gary Gygax at GenCon when I was 14. We were a smaller more niche group back in the early 1980s. Players now are more casual less dedicated. Tabletop games will be a passing hobby for many of them not a lifetime persuit.

Touché sir. Sometimes we forget what it was like to be young and foolish. I run a bi- weekly game at the library for younguns. Hopefully I can teach them something.
