Watch game 3. The computers pretty much blew up because the players arrived at a gamestate that has never happened before in the history of recorded chess.
Also Carlsen got swindled out of two wins and that'll likely cost him if he can send it to tiebreaks. Then again this might just be a 7-5 for the russian.

To be fair there's so many combinations for chess game states that it's just not feasible to analyze all the ones that have yet to occur when you can focus on the knowns and guide play towards a win-optimal outcome.
For the ones that aren't recorded you just play like a dumbass and learn from it, trying anything that is deemed to have better odds of winning than before (which may mean exploring more untested moves just because they don't have any record of losing games).
At least, that's how I would approach it. Still not as efficient as whatever DB probably rolled with.
