With this thread, I thought we might have some fun brainstorming lighthearted quests ideas and sharing stories of heartwarming campaigns we've played.

>Playing cupid behind the scenes to bring a party member and his "secret" crush together.

>Traveling the world, sampling each fantasy race's signature dishes, collecting recipes.

>Searching for a way to turn the living doll the party found into the real girl she dreams to be.

>Preventing or participating in an escalating prank war between two irresponsible wizards.

>Fixing up and running an old tavern that one of the party members has recently inherited.

If your consequence is "oh no, mr.bumblefuck and mrs.yeastcunt didn't marry :(" it's a shit consequence. It changes nothing. It's even worse than "omg so creative" DM's "oh no, the kingdom will fall into darkness :(", they like to brag about. I don't give a single shit about your imaginary kingdom, i care only for my character. He (and other party members, but it's THEIR job to look after their characters) is the center of a game, and nothing DM says has an effect on that.

This trope might exist in JRPGs somewhere, but I would be a fan of a kind of "cosy catastrophe" post apocalyptic setting. A lot of post apocalyptic stuff is like Mad Max, where technologies from the former civilization are still available and familiar to the characters who lived before "shit hit the fan." And the post apocalyptic society is extremely chaotic as people are using guns and cars to fight over what few resources exist.

I'm thinking of going farther into the future, where the climate has stabilized somewhat and human society exists as an agricultural society somewhat resembling our notion of generic medieval fantasy. So far in the future that people forgot what happened, and regard the ruins of the previous civilization no differently than the more natural features of the landscape.

Obviously the kind of stuff you see in weeaboo ruin porn art.

>as Gygax intended

Gygax was fair for his time and that time is long gone. RPGs have shifted gear and have managed to be more than a miniature wargame. A proper RPG can have your swordfag get swarmed by a guy that decided to make connections in town, make himself likeable and send a bunch of guards your way. Also GMs start growing some balls and if you say that shit, your character gets killed and you get kicked.

tl;dr, what Gygax intended doesn't apply anymore, kill yourself you baity faggot and choke on this (You)

That and Gygax ran plenty of games with plenty of story. I mean, that's the entire REASON we have Greyhawk as a setting with a heap of fleshed out details.

People seem to think that con games (Games designed for people who don't know each other and will likely not meet again) were 100% of his games.

>Actual roleplaying
Here's how it works.
You're a normal dude, with a normal sword (or a magical dildo if you're into that).
You go into dungeons. In a dungeon nobody cares if you're third prince of Fuckoffistan or a duke of Bumburg - you catch an arrow in your gut, cleric either resurrects you or gives you a small epitaph, the group moves on.

You can roleplay in downtime, buying bitches, building castles, sodomizing yourself with your magicl dildo, i don't care. It's not ROLEPLAYING game, it's roleplaying GAME. The world doesn't give a shit who you are. Git gud or git ded. Don't try to save your shitty mary sue with "b-but i have ten fail points! I can spend one and magical fairy will fly to me and not make me die of tetanus!". No. get over it. The world doesn't give a shit.

>A dragon has come to town trying to book a venue for the 213th Council of Wyrms. He is trying to buy land to begin construction for the event but no one will sell it to him and he is getting tired of explaining to knights that he won't fight them.

I honestly don't see enough of it to get angry about it, though. I stopped liking Bioware games a while ago, the agenda they push exists concurrently with genuinely boring game design. And I can tell that the new Star Wars movies are trying hard to avoid white male protagonists, but The Force Awakens was otherwise very uninspired so I don't care. Huh? We have a white male character right in the main team for Rogue One and the Rebel Ace who gets the entire story going/saves the day in the end is a white male.

The latter can be seen as maybe not a protagonist but the entire team in Rogue One are protagonists, not just the female lead.

>>
>>50262774

Yeah, I was thinking about the team composition in Rogue One and wondering if Star Wars was the best example. But Kylo Ren was a fucking awful antagonist, I'm not sure what they were doing there.

But I could also point to the "feminist" influences in Mad Max Fury Road and say, "Hey, these make sense and the movie was really good. I can't complain."
>>
>>50262783

Ignoring them doesn't work, that's how shit got this far. There has to be a backlash.
>>
>>50262743

The Force Awakens wasn't trying to be a dramatic change. It was very clear it's mission statement was to go 'These is going to be much more OT than Prequels' and it did that by making a very, very OT story.

It's also set up a very different dynamic between the two factions than the OT had. The Rebellion/Empire was very much 'Can't fight a real war, so they need a golden bullet'. While the First Order is more 'Neither side has a huge military advantage over the other'. Hence the First Order being forced to pull back when the Rebels actually turned up, as they couldn't afford to get into a proper fight.

Anyways. Lighthearted can be done without fanfiction tier quirky writing a la Bioware.
>>
>>50262798

Actually, I really like Kylo Ren (If they are doing what I strongly suspect they are doing with him.)

He's not supposed to be a potent, imposing antagonist in the way that Darth Vader is. He's supposed to be more 'Opposition that grows with the protagonist'. A rival, not a final opponent to be built up to beating.

He's got some serious, serious issues that fuck him over and a lot of room to grow himself. If I'm right (And I hope I am) the movies are going to focus on his progression as a character nearly as much as hers.

Kylo Ren is a deliberate attempt to emasculate men and mock people who wanted a white male protagonist. Fortunately, with Trump in charge, the zeitgeist is going to be changing, and soon.

I won't be surprised if we see a new, white Captain America, for example. Same for Ms. Marvel. All the 'diversity' characters are now out-of-place in a country where they're no longer the prevailing interest.
>>
>>50262842

It was, yeah but it also was the action of a very well funded terrorist group. The Death Star was built openly and used as a terror weapon. Starkiller Base was used for a sneak attack as they couldn't remotely engage the republic fairly.

I'm actually hoping for that, too. The first movie shows Rey as a somewhat incorruptible character with strong latent force powers, while Kylo actually expresses doubts. That foil could easily be turned upside down, and I expect we'll learn a lot more about Luke's failed Jedi training effort in the next movie. That might shed some much needed LIGHT on Kylo Ren as a character.

I think Kylo's issues is that he's really, really not playing to his strengths.

His Saber skills are really not his strong point but he showed several times that he's got a fantastic control of the force...when he's focused.

Instead he's going off a very flawed idea of the Sith code where he acts like 'Using your anger' means turning into a flailing idiot as you lose all self control. Vader didn't do that. Vader's anger was focused and honed like a knife.

Rey on the other hand is a melee brawler from the very start (See: Staff stuff) and flowed with the force well to actually enhance her talents, rather than trying to push in entirely the wrong direction for herself.

Kylo needs to learn to play to his own advantages, rather than trying to focus on Vader's strengths. He'll never be Vader's equal with a lightsaber and he shouldn't try to be at the exclusion of his actual talents.

To go to the old RPG terms: Kylo is a Consular, Rey is on her way to being a Guardian but Kylo doesn't realise it.

I have run semiannual/ quarterly session for my son and a few of his friends. Being first graders, I basically run a Saturday morning fantasy cartoon. The kids are guards for a hedge wizard and his niece/ courier. They have solved riddles with tricky pixies, helped reinforce a small town so a ritual could make the farms fertile again and not have to import food from a shifty goblin trader, scattered a bandit group led by an elf that was the Frenchman from Monty Python and Dick Dastardly mashed together, and have a recurring villain in a Worg named Slavog that is upset they keep passing through "his" woods on jobs.

I keep it low level and as the kids get older and mature, so will the adventures and power they command. Pic is me now that they are asking, "Anondad, when can we play D&D again?"

I'm not sure it's exactly what you're talking about, but I've spent years reading Homestuck. It used to be a RPG-parody, cosmic Jumanji style adventure. Halfway through it shifted to YA novel tier, shipping romance drama, and I was heartbroken. Is it that kind of thing? Ruining a cool premise with boring shit intended for a completely different audience that didn't care about it?

i... strongly disagree with those saying that "Kill, loot, sell to get more killy stuff, kill more" is the best way to play, i i wanted that i'd just play a Skyrim or something, but at the same time i can see how quests getting cats out of trees make you feel like a bitch when you want to be a hero. Still social interaction shouldn't be ignored totally, especially as buildups to greater stuff.
Save the cat, it's like a two second interaction
turns out the cat's owner is the mayor's daughter.
Mayor is impressed you're a decent sort who would help a little girl, wants to offer you a job.

I've personally been toying with the idea of non-fight random encounters. Why is everyone the party meets along the road or in the forest goblins and bandits, just ONCE have them run into a group of elves having a picnic and invite the PCs to hang out, or just a hunter in the woods who can say "oh yeah the old mine is down that way, watch out, i saw bear tracks round there"

Say what you want about Bioware, one of my favorite things in Mass Effect where the random people talking that made it feel like there was a whole world happening
>>
>>50263158
>I've personally been toying with the idea of non-fight random encounters.

That's what Reaction Roll in D&D is for. If the DM roll a random encounter with a bunch of goblins, he should check their disposition towards the PCs with a Reaction Roll (unless there are dwarves in the party. Fucking dwarves!).

Also, I like the idea of random encounters as world-building: if the DM roll an encounter with a dragon, maybe the PCs will witness a dragon catching a cow from a farm and flying to a nearby mountaintop.
>>
Dangerous quests are thrilling, but they're also tiring in the long run, unless your group is the exception that can't get enough.
Most people will burn out from too much scheming and fighting. So low-stakes, noncombat encounters can be a great way to help your players relax.
Of course too much of -that- will get boring, so it's obviously a matter of finding a balance that changes with every group.

>>
>>50263158
>just ONCE have them run into a group of elves having a picnic and invite the PCs to hang out,
I'm all for noncombat encounters, but this is an incredibly boring idea. Something interesting should always happen or there's no point in highlighting it happening at all
>>
>>50262857
I assume you're making a joke, but maybe you're serious. Who knows!
>>
>>50263268
Yes. The PCs should be able to at least gather some piece of useful information from the elves, like the location of some long-lost ruins, the lair of a foul beast, or the nearest McDonalds.
>>
>>50263268
Well, three months later, as the zombie apocalypse is shambling across the earth and the party reaches a holdout of survivors you can have some of them be all "Hey, didn't we have a picnic with those guys once?" "Oh yeah, I remember. They're cool, we can let them in."
>>
>>50263244

Skyrim held my interest for about as long as I could be a low level archer. Walking around in that game world taking shots at game and collecting their meats and hides. Being able to cook said meats and make armor out of said hides. But the higher level armor crafting abandons leather and moves into things like "glass" armor IIRC, and the food isn't terribly helpful.

But maybe I should think less about the benefits of higher level armor and items and just role play or something, I don't know.

A purpose is important. But flavor is a perfectly acceptable purpose, if your players enjoy driving the story.
For example, they'll make friends with the elves, learn their names and where they live, and bring them up sessions later (possibly to your great surprise) when they need elf-related info or help.

But obviously that takes a certain kind of group. Some players panic when faced with a new situation and no obvious goal. They prefer to have obvious challenges and obstacles thrown at them, which is totally acceptable. Just don't have them stumble across an elven picnic. It'll be awkward.

Campaign I've run: 2e D&D, with the players all some type of fairy/pixie/et cetera. I don't remember what they each picked, now.

They had each been chosen as the forest's protectors, from their tribe. Their mission was to prevent harm from befalling the forest, but forbidden from doing any harm.

So most encounters ended up as morale rolls and RP. Their first adventure was to scare a trapper into leaving the forest. Things followed like sabotage a logging operation, convince travelers that the forest was just haunted enough to leave alone, but not haunted enough to burn down. Rescue animals from natural disasters. Stuff like that.

Was fun, and completely devoid of combat.

Homestuck crashed and burned when Hussie made up Troll Romance to make a joke about shipping wars and PEOPLE ACTUALLY USED IT IN REAL LIFE JESUS FUCK AAAAGH. I read Problem Sleuth, I loved it, really enjoyed early Homestuck and the community when it was still basically a quest, and then I couldn't even bring myself to read it after a while. The fandom was also venereal disease-tier.

As for this whole thread point, I really like to inject some casualness, especially since I have players that really like world building and roleplaying. I once had a serious gothic horror campaign planned and my party ended up turning themselves into a merchant company in the first session.
In the end, we ended up doing the gothic horror thing, just in a roundabout and much less terrifying way than I had been planning.

I also ran adventures for my younger sisters and cousins a while back, and most of those tended to be like >>50262981 's stuff, but with slightly less fairy tale and a little bit more Redwall-style adventuring.

Yeah, I'd agree with you there. Maybe early act 6 as the breaking point. The whole point of the first round of trolls is that they were characters who were all flawed to be point of unlikability but with just enough charm to be tolerable. Or, like, half of them had enough charm to be tolerable.
And like, Karkat was a fun character because he was this snarky asshole who genuinely wanted to help but couldn't do it without being a dick, which comboed with his own horrible personal issues to make him a vaguely interesting character to watch.

.......... to be honest, the last thing I remember happening to him at all was some kind of shipping bullshit with uh. The fish queen? Something stupid.
>>
>>50271597
I really liked the human focus early on, and some of the troll shit wasn't bad. I'd say that the Rose grimdark saga was probably the highpoint, though. And I liked Karkat because he was a funny and yet complex character and Hussie seemed to have plans for him.

But oh god, Vriska. Her and Jade becoming an actual mary sue ruined the comic for me.
>>
Quests don't belong on /tg/.

Faggot.
>>
>>50272179
I used to like Vriska when she was a hilariously shitty puppet master who also had a bit of a hero complex.

The only part of Homestuck post-all the new characters that I actually kinda liked was the whole like three panel Vriska "fuck you all I'm going to be a hero" arc.

That said, everything she did between the funnier half of her interaction with John and her death was so fucking obnoxious.

And Jade went from being a fun and clever character I wanted to see more of to someone I wished would just jump into the sun. And then she did. And lived. And everything was awful.
>>
>>50272638
Vriska's arc ended perfectly with her death. It was a great capstone to her character.

Then she got brought back and fixed everything. Not even joking. Not even Caliborn being hilarious could make up for it.

>Everything is over the top and campy reminiscent of Mario and Luigi Series

>Plot involves most basic save the princess from evil dragon

>Characters who run out of HP are decommissioned by the king and are no longer allowed to adventure any more

Does this sound better it's still lighthearted, but has stakes to the player

cheers anon, this shit is comfy

I too wish to play a campaign of Ryuutama.
Honestly, I was considering going through every season as a back-to-back-to-back campaign that starts off hyper-comfy and then gets harder as the players get more used to the game, until it finally culminates in a final test of their survival skills and instincts.
The epilogue would be the trip home and seeing all the people that they helped along the way, as well as all the rewards the party has not already been given for their efforts.

>>50273200
I'd be down if you need players. I'd love innawoods oregon trail.

Are you literally retarded? How is this a Quest Thread? Do you even know what that is?

I think it was a joke.

This reminds me of a time I burned down a village entirely by accident and wound up having to start a revolution to not get killed by the king of he land.
That was a fun game.

>weird hours
It's seven in the morning over here in Burgerland. I'm a model citizen at the moment.

I've never played Ryutama before, but I just picked up a PDF and I'm gonna be doing boring shit during most of the day, so let me flip through it and get a feel for it. If this thread is still up when I get back, let's exchange info or whatever, make something happen.

Really tired of just murdering stuff and nothing else, something comfy sounds fun.

Ran Ryuutama last weekend, anon.
Was surprisingly better received than expected!

Some of my players favorite sessions have been lighthearted quests.

>circus is in town, enjoy some carnival games and shows
>gypsies set up camp, get your fortunes told, draw from the deck of many things, try not to get robbed.
>new towns quest board is a bunch of trivial personal ads. Pet needs training, garden needs tending, lost dog needs found.

In fairness, there's always been something else going on in the background that helps to progress the campaign.

>circus performers are actually demons kidnapping children in the towns they visit.
>gypsies have left previous camp because hobgoblins took over nearest town
>city council suspects one of their members is a traitor, PCs gather info while answering personal ads.

And your character just ceases to exist when not fighting monsters and getting loot? He doesn't even try to spend the loot? He doesn't even get a chance to?

That's...genuinely fascinating.

Imagine stepping into a dungeon and suddenly there's this battle-crazed guy or girl in armor who's searching for orcs and traps and helps you fight and demands a share of the loot, but then as soon as you reach sunlight he or she just ceases to be until your next dungeon delve.

Is your character a summon or something? A semi-helpful spirit that follows the party around? Where does he or she go when not killing things or looking for things to kill? What does he or she want the loot for?
>>
>>50278684
That image is so ubelievably comfy.
>>
>tfw, in a campaign, managed to go from level 1, to 3, with TWO, low level encounters.

>tfw, in a campaign, had 7 fucking sessions, with 4 bits of combat, and still not even level 2.

I want to enjoy lighthearted quests, and not combat-based ones, but god damn, if making it the majority is just the worst.

I'm a sucker for this artist.

I like the idea of these kind of quests, but honestly, I simply don't know how to make them work.

The closest I got was a tournament where they battle on top of ceratopsians (dinosaurs like Triceratops and such). And even if there wasn't any killing, they is was still a battle. Though I must say, the finals were the best moment we had so far.

The worst part is that I think my group might actually enjoy something like that if I managed to make it work.
>>
>>50262378
Then go play a video game, dumbass. I like tabletop RPGs because there can be a flexible world that affects (and is affected by) the PCs.
>>
>>50280036
The given example is the kind of pointless choice that plagues this generation of video game rpgs
>>
>>50262447
In the dungeon you care who you are. Being a third prince you mat not want to crawl through monster shit and vomit even if its the fastest route.
To some the character is far more important than what they do. Comfy quests and settings allow them to explore their character without rolling every minute to see if they get decapitated, without needing magic fail points as you put it. Comfy characters are far less likly to be mary sues than your army slaying min-maxed murder hobo.

Now I've said that I can honestly say I prefere a mix of comfy quests and dungeons, it helps me feel more attatched to all the characters, including my own so peril and death actually have meaning
>>
I once GM'ed a lighthearted campaign like that, we roleplayed a lot in the city (most of the sessions where pure roleplay, practically 0 combat except for one tavern brawl and helping a guy who was getting mugged) and where having a good time. The characters where just a group of 5 friends, a merchant's apprentice, a barmaid, a fruit vendor (female), a guardsman and his brother who wanted to be a guardsman too. Things started really light hearted but slowly turned grim as a war broke between kingdoms. By the time the campaign was over there was nothing left of the group of friends, the barmaid was executed for treason, the merchant's apprentice was captured by the enemy while he tried to flee from the war, the fruit vendor became a nurse to help the troops on the battlefield but couldn't handle it so she became a drunken waste instead and the 2 brothers where called to arms, the younger one died in battle, it wasn't a really heroic death, just one more dead soldier. 10 years passed, the war ended with their country as the loser. The merchant's apprentice was released and sent back to his town where the 3 surviving characters met at the place they always gathered before the war. Their country was impobrished and occupied by enemy troops for the next 20 years, the 3 surviving characters had to live with the memories of those 30 years for the rest of their lives
>>
>>50262981
that sounds like great parenting mate. Also do you do the voices of the npc's?
>>
>>50278769

Not that guy, but a character like that could make for really good plot. Imagine if he's not even aware he's in any other dungeon, that every time he meets the party at the dungeon he doesn't know them...even after giving the cleric his pendant as a memento.

And then starts slowly breaking down as his memories clash with his magically ever blank personality after seeing the pendant both in the cleric's hands and on his neck.
>>
>>50281575
then he snaps, sometimes he is a friend, sometimes he's a terrible enemy (you know, for all that XP he got clearing innumerable dungeons for thousands of adventurers groups) Each time the party goes into a dungeon they fear the spectral warrior because they don't know what he will do
>>
>>50281618

Yeah! Maybe a side quest to figure out where he snapped.

His past incarnation fell for the cleric, and, due to possession shenanigans that didn't happen yet, ended up seeing the rest of the party kill the cleric, but not the cleric getting possessed, flew into a rage and tries to kill the party for killing his sweetheart. If it's not the enemy one, it's another one where he was there to help, and saved the cleric, or one who didn't have any of that happen yet, or maybe one from a timeline that got blocked off in the game because the thief didn't try to open the mysterious colorless door of ominous and so on and so forth.
