These one sjust look like they've just come out of paint stripping. At least whenever I strip pain from non-metal models, it's very difficult to fully remove the undercoat, leaving them looking pretty much like the ones in the picture (although usually black instead of red), and since the stripping solution I use also seems to weaken the glue if I leave the models submerged into it, they end up falling apart during the stripping. After reassembling them and applying new undercoat and paint, they end up looking almost as good as new, though (although inability to fully remove the undercoat leads to some loss of detail and unevenness, but usually too small to be visible unless you hold the model right up to our face).

you just have to get better at removing parts from sprues

I would suggest cutting the sprue to pieces so you can more precisely remove the connecting plastic from the parts, also its always better to remove too little sprue than to remove too much sprue and cut into the part itself because thats a lot harder to fix, but don't worry you will improve.

Here what I rank paint jobs, from best to worst:

>Studio
Could maybe win awards. You wouldn't normally play a lot with models that are studio since the paint job starts to actually add value to the model. If you couldn't support yourself painting miniatures if you wanted to, you don't paint at a studio level.

Bases are fantastic and there is a clear composition to the way the model was built and posed.

>Tabletop Thin
Clean work, has a bunch of highlights, looks good, but still didn't take ages. Admirable. Commendable. Strive for this.

Bases look great, but it is obviously a game piece and not something you would put in a display case.

>Tabletop Standard
You didn't miss any details, and you applied a wash. Paints are thin, models are free of mold lines. If the work is done clean here, then you can take the models up a notch to the next step if you want later with highlights and other effects.

Your bases are basic, but better than just using sand.

>Tabletop Acceptable
You got most of the details and maybe some wash. Coverage might not be excellent. Maybe missed a few mold lines.

You threw some sand on the base (with or without paint) and called it done.

You've got some color over the primer.

You probably didn't do anything to the base.

I've often thought of buying poorly painted models from ebay (since they're assembled but dick cheaper) and paint stripping. What's being used here?

If it's acrylic, you can get rid of paint really easily by soaking the model in warm soapy water (to loosen the paint, isn't always necessary), and then 'painting' it with methylated spirits. Alcohols don't melt plastics like acetone does.
