Power Armor Thread - Yagn's Workshop Edition

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Thread replies: 314

Welcome traveler! Welcome to Yagn's, the greatest workshop for powered armor on the whole of the frontier.

You'll find ample garage space for repairs and tinkering, and no doubt plenty of enthusiasts from all over to discuss the finer points of mechanized suits with. Hell, if you're just a budding enthusiast, then maybe we can get you a custom suit of your own to start working on, for just a little credit!

>POWER ARMOR THREAD

>Post power armor pics, stories, etc. and talk about your favorite armor aesthetics, and details of powered suits!

>Discuss favorite depictions of power armor in various media

>Discuss tabletop games that heavily feature power armor in either fluff or game mechanics

>Yagn's is the greatest power armor workshop on the edge of explored space, where all manner of oddities and enthusiasts gather [NOTE: this is not a /qst/ thread, but light RP can be a fun addition to the thread's flavor]

>I will be posting the MechAnon Power Armor CYOA. It goes into mech/cyborg territory but is otherwise very robust at building power suits [NOTE: this is not a CYOA thread, but feel free to use the CYOA as a starting point for conversation and power armor customization]

I tried starting up this thread a few weeks ago, but nobody seemed interested in fluffy power armor discussion at the time. Hopefully people are more in the mood this time.

Indeed, I'm quite taken with the idea of wearing regular cloths over your armor. I imagine in some setting where people basically make it as part of their daily dress: Put on my muscle suit and helmet then slip on my sweet kicks and my jacket before rolling out to the club because you know you and your crew are goning to get jumped at some point in the night.

Bonus points if the helmets have that folding design like in Dead Space.

I don't know. I did enjoy it though the battery life sucked, but it is hard to imagine armor that opens up like that serving as adequate radiation protection which it is often depicted as. I guess if you wore a protective suit underneath.
>>
>>50202437
That is true. The seals seem to be really lacking.
>>
>>50202447
I guess it always would need an internal lining since the joints would always be a weak point for protection and it's not like you can NOT have joints unless you want to be a statue.

Beyond that I think it made sense. They had the frames already mass produced so they were creating more advanced armor systems to attach to those frames. Honestly it would make more sense to design new armor from the ground up, so to speak, since the motors for the earlier frames might be completely inadequate...and yet it is completely realistic. How many times do we see government screwing up new weapons systems by demanding they incorporate parts of existing programs to justify the old pork even if that crap is completely incompatible?

My personal headcanon that covers both the weird battery life issue and the modular frame.

The frame was actually NEW tech under testing in the Boston area, for mixing and matching parts when resupply wasn't available. They were still mostly prototypes using old T45 power cells instead of T52 reactors, later models would have been near-endless power.

And I guess the Pseudo-enclave armor was built by early enclave visiting the area to search for the Institute.
>>
>>50202578
It's pretty much impossible to say about the battery life since that wasn't a mechanic in any of the early games. We do have some fluff about the small power cells being chewed through but is the fusion cell used in Fallout 4 a mod or just a streamlined game mechanic?

I suppose the Institute may have had a hand in the early X series armor. They do have a thing for robotics...

This should be most of it. The extra weapons and a good bunch of the between-mission lore posts by the old GM.

To clarify, at first the game was indeed this whole 'tumblr mind-controlled by aliens' bullshit that's described in the early images, but with the 2.0 update everyone decided to retcon that shit into 'random humans being mind-controlled by aliens' and just call the enemies the 'Vannai Puppets' because it was less silly. while I lately prefer lighter armor looks(iron man, pic related, the Atom, Batman Beyond) I don't like the REALLY slim armor.
I'd prefer things with a little heft, solid plates over a mesh or interlocking components.

WHO LIKES MODULAR ARMOR?
I DO, IT'S NICE AND VERSATILE FOR ALL OF YOUR ASSORTED MISSION NEEDS.
but for real, I like to have the option for an armor operator to pull a Zoids and design a series of modules or load-outs for rapid changes.

HOW WOULD YOU HANDLE THE IMBALANCE OF POWER?
between wearer's deprived of their suits and someone IN their suit?
say the team is captured and their suits deactivated, how would you build the system?

>>50200383 or you just get armor with clothes attach-points? a cloak or cape with your crews mark? painted panels for style? I wonder what the "powered armor custom paint-shop" would charge you to for a design? would they charge a subscription fee to repaint areas that get the paint shot off? perhaps brand-name aesthetic mods? get your legs units brand-named by doc-marten, converse, nike, croc?

Long story short, PACYOA Teamwork Edition never died. It just went into a coma. The old remnants of the playerbase still RP and sometimes (try to) play it, and they're now thinking about relaunching the game here with a 3.0 version of the CYOA, continuing the story where they left off.

Which means, there's a war-torn Earth to rebuild and a giant alien mothership in orbit to blow up. And who knows what happens after that.

The Nanosuit 2.0, with no power what so ever, survived an impact with earth after falling out of orbit, IE burned in and crashed at speeds well over terminal velocity thanks to the boost of being in high orbit.

Prophet literally walked it off. The Nanosuit is not only durable, but basically impossible to kill unless you were to use a matter erasing gun. Otherwise not only does it repair itself, but the wearer is consumed by the suit and transformed into a posthuman zombie.
>>
>>50206628

Okay, admittedly I did not know about that. So maybe using it as the Mesh pic was wrong - there's no way in hell a Mesh could tank that.

With proper shielding I THINK a Light could take it. Everything from Medium and up can shrug it off with some minor damage. But then again, we had a Light eat a nuke to the face and the pilot survived with just a few missing limbs, so 'proper shielding' might be enough to save anyone.

Except Zulu
>>
>>50206927
The nanosuit would probably survive a nuclear blast too, with no limbs lost. The pilot doesn't need to survive, the only reason why the nanosuit 2.0 even has a human operator is to use them for ethical counsel.

Having a system that focuses on possible pvp might make it so stories can include human vs human fighting. I like the light rules system, but those same rules kinda limit the game to pve because anything at or above 250 can have enough power to either kill in one shot or nuke a city.

Then again this is only a GM's opinion that still wants to play.

Yes, but you have to buy fusion and pay all the points for them. Bio is treated like an upgrade for ONE of the body types so if you pick variable it would be:
Bio amphibious that could turn into insectoid (or bio insectoid/ amphibious.) for 55 (or bio/amphi, bio/insect.) for 65

If you wanted it to be on the same size as the Arbalest, you'd need a Fortress. But since that would be a slow brick of a robot, I don't see it FEELING anything like the Arbalest at all. If you want sheer speed, go for a Light. If you want more raw power and/or being able to carry more guns, go for a Heavy. As for the stat boosting items, as a rule of thumb every single late game Suit had all of those installed, but on a 200p build you'd be okay with just one or two.

A child is born and a suit is ready for her, built perfectly to fit the wailing and confused baby. The suit seals around her, dark, warm. It seals shut and will never open again.

It grows with her and feeds her, nutrient paste synthesized by specialized machines within its compact form and energy provided by a reactor with enough fuel to last eons.

She has never eaten, or drank, what she needs is provided for her by her suit, her body. Hunger grows quiet in time, decades makes such want silent, that is what she tells herself.

An anti-tank weapon strikes her in the middle ripping her insides and a good portion of her spine from her suit into a horrid pile on the ground, the suit repairs the damage and even makes improvements, the itch never goes away.

An explosion ruptures most of her blood vessels, it is the worst pain she has ever felt, she keeps walking, her suit keeps her walking.

Someone askes her a question, they do not have a suit, she has forgotten how to talk so her suit does it for her.

A mistake and with it, a sudden explosion, thrown back she impacts the ground feeling her bones break and shatter and begin to repair, her suit’s faceplate is broken, it will be repaired soon, she spots something horrid before her, a single blood red eye in a pale dead face, then its gone and she is repaired.

Her suit gets up.

She gets up.

Power armor gives me nightmares.

I remember beginning reading Hamilton's Fallen Dragon in a very recent edition, and I pictured the setting as modern sci-fi. You'll know we're in the future when we wear power armor.

But you'll know we're in the SUPER future when we start wearing tabards and fur cloaks over our power armor.

It's that 360 thing where eventually advanced science becomes either so simple or so esoteric to us that we have the time to pimp out things like super-armor with a bunch of fashion-oriented trinkets.

I can't speak for the Dev Team as a whole, much less for what remains of the old playerbase, but most likely we'd just set up shop in a /tg/ general again. Or maybe /qst/, not sure, I think discussion only would be fine to host here.

But yeah. Get a new general rolling, dust off the old IRCs, finish running the remaining four or so missions in the current system and then make 3.0 and start the new story. We did a vote bewteen us some time ago, people decided to continue on a Season Two instead of just rebooting the whole thing.

That's all for the factions. As for the most robust version of the system so far, that's 2.0. Unless someone unrelaed to TE made a custom version of their own.

But TE 2.0 has a horrible problem with DEX, since one of our devs quit before he could unfuck it. Without proper parrying rules and hard caps on stat mods, DEX is kinda bullshit.

Not being able to breath in space is the least of your concerns. Your armor can handle that. You have to deal with being erased from existence inside of a space that fucks with the very nature of space and time by time traveling cyborgs who figured out there was more they could do with space and time by fucking with beings who can literally cut their way through reality and kill each other casually and not worry about permenant death.

Destiny really does a good job of taking ridiculously god-tier technology and presenting it in a fantastical way that makes it easy to get behind. Like 3D printing nanotech that's basically currency, repair, and healing; hard drives with infinite space; and being able to scientifically isolate a "soul". And they're all just presented like "this is the new magic".

>>50216931
That's a low-tier warlock armor with a wonk paint scheme. High-tier armors for all classes essentially look like someone put a power-weave under fantasy armor. I think there're a few armors that are like the bones of space dragons stuffed full of cybernetics.

Because it gives you a very well-mixed blend of all the things you'd want in that genre. I love the term "mythic sci-fi".

It blends fantasy magitek armor with straight up halo-esque power armor, it gives you guns that are magic and fancy enough to be a suitable stand in for your "avenging sword" and "purging magic" - and then it ACTUALLY gives you magic space-swords and magic on top of that.

Everyone's magic, everyone's united, posthumans and robots aren't assholes and are our friends.

Honestly, the lore skirts an interesting line between "we're fucked" and "things have actually gone way fucking better than expected".

I'd love to see even more customization detail in Destiny 2, in all aspects (playstyle, armor, weapons, ships, face) , and a more open and inviting world, with small settlements, and vast open stretches of land, and tons of cool modes of transportation to help you see it all in a timely and engaging manner.

I want them to allow you to travel the rest of earth instead of just shitting around Russia. I mean, we got norse/viking esque armor designs from the Iron Lords I want to see what other Guardians who are not wholly affliated with the city are like

This.
All of this.

In addition, I'd just like to see the world expanded more in the hypothetical sequel, both physically, in terms of allowing more exploration, and metaphysically, in terms of plot structure and even just some light mythos exposure I mean come on, no one reads ALL those grimoire cards. I might like some casual dialogue with NPCs if I want to know more about them or the setting. It would be cool to talk to Banshee-44 about hand cannons (or whatever your most-used primary happens to be) in between missions or whatever.

Do you need lore help? Not much you can do to mess with it, or even be marked non-canon.

If we get enough players ready, I could GM something, most likely canon. Probably something like the few tutorial/boot camp missions we had, I think Tim GM'd one of those.

But yeah, let's say... six players? Four minimum. We can settle the details on the IRC. I think the old #PACYOA room still exists.

Having a barrier of dense metal between you and radiation will protect you from it already. To keep you from inhaling radioactive particles only the helmet has to form a seal, or even just keep air pressure inside the helmet higher than air pressure outside of it, but from what it looks like the helmet is a fully sealed system.

That's true, but remember that the player was frozen for 210 years, so even if the batteries haven't been constantly in use (some of the ones you snag indeed are still in use in those generators) they've probably leaked a great deal of their juice, or degraded and lost a great deal of their efficiency from sitting around in the elements.

I tend to think that the Fusion Core was a backup system for the armor, and pulled double duty as an onboard power supply for external systems like heavy energy weapons and such. Except for the T45A-T45C, those I'd say ran on the FC's exclusively, with the D, E and F-series incorporating the "micro-fusion pack" for the centuries-long battery life that would see full deployment with the T51, which would itself keep the FC as a backup.

This would mean that by 2277, the main fusion packs on non-enclave PA's (it's mentioned somewhere that even the Brotherhood lacks production capability, and makes do on stored equipment and overhauled suits) would be completely depleted or nearly so. Necessitating the use of Fusion Cores full time.

As a justification for the T60, I see it as an extension of the T45. The T51 was West Tek's cadillac of power armor. Its's magnum opus of military excellence. As such, the T51 is pack to the gills with all the bleeding-edge tech and proprietary systems West Tek could pack in to make an amazing high-performance weapon system. But awesome as it was, it was a nightmare to keep going in the field with all it's specialty systems and tech. Perfect for Special Forces, a solid gold bitch and a half for field operations and maintenance. Soldiers and Brass loved it. Quartermasters, engineers, and appropriations officers wanted to murder the men that designed it.

Cue the T60. An upgraded extension of the proven and rugged T45. Frame strength and durability, with a mind to (comparatively) easy field maintenance and deployment life. A suit that took what worked with the T45 and ran with it to make a tough, capable and cheaper to deploy infantry field armor.

West Tek, not to be outdone in their own arena, double down on high-performance, and begins development on the X-series, which wouldn't see production outside of limited runs and prototypes for SF use, and would lead to the Enclave's Advanced Power Armor projects.

>>50229992

Alright, for everyone who cannot get into the IRC or can't be assed to do so right now:

http://the-power-armor-cyoa.wikia.com/wiki/PACYOA_Teamwork_Edition

This was the first page made for the original missions we ran. Mostly player rosters and a basic overview of what happened.

http://the-power-armor-cyoa.wikia.com/wiki/PACYOA:TE_Lore_General

As the name implies, this is a lore dump. It should explain pretty much everything you need to know about the setting.

http://the-power-armor-cyoa.wikia.com/wiki/Category:PACYOA:_TE

This is a list of every article about our game on the wiki. Most of these are individual player pages and character profiles. These were maintained by the players themselves, so quality WILL vary.

http://the-power-armor-cyoa.wikia.com/wiki/Thread_History

And this is also very self-explanatory. An archive of pretty much every thread we ever had. We're still in the process of cataloguing some of the Mission threads since moe died.

As for when the next mission will be ran, nothing has been decided yet, currently we're mostly going over the lore and system in the IRC. I'll post something when we figure that out.

I wish power armor looked more designed than it does, a lot of depictions of it basically make it look super utilitarian or industrial with little attention payed to design or aesthetic.

My transport suit with vehicle grapple, capable of carrying underneath of itself any other suit (extra limbs plus the natural legs function together as 4 grapple arms or 4 legs) while also carrying 15 passengers and personal gear.
I could grapple a cargo container instead of a vehicle if needed. To be clear, the Mount functionality is being used for the grapple mechanic. Bulwark of the Weak to protect my passenger(s) and a Rail Rifle to defend offensively, or perform orbital bombardment missions. Everything else is in service of making this the Airline that Never Sleeps. All contracts completed on time and with minimal casualties!

>>50249989
Aaaaand these are the space marines I'd hopefully be filled with. Heavily focused on utility, light on the firepower. Although with the RPGs, 8 hits will take out ANY suit, so they aren't useless in a heavy fight. Add on fire support from the transport and the vehicle (probably an EC3/Levitate Fortress gun truck) and you've got a fair bit of firepower, in addition to the ability to completely just do whatever you want. I wanted to add Canvas 2 but I just don't have the points. I'm already assuming the tools from collapsible 2 are accessible while in the suit, so I don't have to pay for a t1 blade. I'd rather not have these guys getting out of their suits, picking a lock on a door, and then getting back in, seems kinda silly. Ditto with the blade and other tools.

shit, I overspent anyways.
half of the troops lose Deployable Cover and Scout Drone.
the other half lose Spider, Spyware, and Terminal.
>>
>>50250445
if you're buying jump jets, get Hopper type legs instead. They give free jump jets plus stat boosts, and match your pic a lil better.
>>
>>50250471
Ooh, didn't think of that. Thx.

I like Shrapnel's Exoskeleton/power armor the best out of any and all scifi power armors.

It's not super high-tech filled with overdesigned bits and with sixty different spec-ops looking bullshit bolted on.

Instead here's a suit that's the future equilevant of a today's standard rifleman's loadout. Everything is designed to be efficient as possible with minimal acceptable cost without compromising the protection and safety of the trooper but still keeping it expendable.

Big solid torso piece consisting of armor plating with limbs being covered with future-equilevant of kevlar padding. Love it, absolutely love it. I can look at these suits and easily see how they're taken apart and put back together for the routine equipment checks in the barracks when the troopers enter or leave service and imagine the situations of some fuck-up coming up one piece short that cuts his payment for the rest of his service until that one single 50,000 credit costing bit is paid up.

And the fact that "Heavy Infantry" battalions which wears these suits is a common thing in the setting also tickles my scifi tastes just right.

Even with all this equipment and firepower, they're still just glorified mechanized infantry.
>>
I always find it amusing reality reflects literature to a point. Considering war is less about numbers and projection of force, power armor is less of a question of "if" but "when."
>>
>>50252109
Power armor may become a necessity. If firearm tech becomes predictably overpowered, the only armor capable of defending from it would likely require a mechanized frame to support.
>>
>>50252208
If it does come to that, then we need a 'universal armor', otherwise we'd go from the WW1/2 R&D cycle with Light, Medium, and Heavy types with all of the different roles they fulfill.
>>
>>50252208
and if firearms tech does NOT get an advance on tech it might take such a frame to carry enough gun to counter the armor.

Armor Piercing rounds came about to counter the new tech in armor.

whichever comes first the other will happen soon after.

and in either case I look forward to the future.

>inb4 we have infantry rifles that shoot mini APDS or HEAT rounds after it turns out that power armour can shrug off standard ammunition.

Eventually we will become the animu. Shooting miniature suns at each other's powered suits of dark-matter armor, or dodging lightning guns in hypersonic mesh suits.

I didn't know this specific combination of words could trigger such a painful erection.

Abilities are fairly grounded; not enough wish fulfillment. Also not being worked on any more.

That game was the shit. A tactical open-world FPS where you're a heinlein power armor trooper leading a small squad, doing mad high rocket thrusts? That's awesome.

Way better than Section 9, and came out a decade earlier.

Anybody seen the Space Marine Mod for Fallout 4.

Why put people's useless squishy bodies inside of suits, when we can put their head/brain inside a much more protected/much lighter suit?

Because I'd like to LEAVE the suit at some point, for things like hot showers, or lounging, or sex.
