>>

Raptor people, like kobolds crossed with harpies.
>>
>>50182171
Humans only. It's the best and superior choice.

If you NEED to include others include them as a footnote ending with "and then humans came and killed them all".
>>
>>50182224
>What kind of fantasy setting?
High- not really noblebright but kind of optimistic? Or at least pastoral.

Parts of the setting are meant to be a bit darker, but only parts. I don't want to fall into the same brown and grey edgy shit everyone else is doing nowadays.

>How prevalent is magic and magic abilities?
I always get in trouble with this one. Magic is COMMON but it's WEAK. At least the common magic is; every town has at least one soothsayer or old man with a couple of spells up his sleeve. But these don't go anywhere beyond brewing up a few love potions for the young townsfolk and carving protective talismans of hazel to ward away bad spirits. Real powerful Wizards are much less common, more often to be adventurers, advisors to kings or kings themselves, etc.

>Tech level
Just fuck my shit up. I really like some near-industrial revolution stuff, like muskets and pike and shot, but at the same time I want to preserve the diverse close range fighting weapons and armors. Just consider it a mish-mash and call it a day.
>>
>>50182185
>Elves were aristocratic people taking pride in their magic and beauty. Then humans came and killed them all.

>Dwarves were industrious race harnessing the heat of volcano for their forges. And then humans collapsed their own mountains at them and killed them all.

>Orcs were savage raiders, a machine of destruction that humans stopped once and for all, killing them all.

>>50182233
>Lizardmen were reclusive people hiding in their swamps until humans came, dried their swamps for arable land and killed them all.

>>50182235
>Raptor people ruled the sky island until humans created flying machines and hunted them until they killed them all.
>>

Humans+

Better than humans in every conceivable way, with absolutely no downsides. They could wipe humans out but don't because they pity them. Humans will never ever stand a chance of even scratching one.

>>
>>50182317
Humans+ are immune to disease anon. And/or they are genetically close enough to humans that the plague effects them too.
>>
>>50182309
>Gnomes were toying with engineering beyond what world was ready to see, so humans launched a preemptive strike, killing them all.
>>
>>50182262
Choose a single race that interests you and make that the main core race. All other races are just savage beasts lurking in the shadows of forests and mountains far away from civilization. They have no notable culture or technology to speak of and most of them are on the intellectual level of animals.

Ah, but you misunderstand.Humans+ are divinely just a bit better than humans. Every time Humans do something to catch up, Humans+ scoot ahead. Humans will never catch up, because they have be created to not be able to. The Creator did it to teach them humility or something. There's also Humans- who are just a little shittier but can never catch up.

>Core

>>
>>50182171
Best step I can recommend is to sit down, think about what kind of world you're building, and whether or not a race can be an interesting part of it.

For example, in my world, dwarves and elves are extinct due to causing the magical apocalypse, calibans (hideously mutated-by-magic human-spawn, originally from Ravenloft) are everywhere, orks are a failed dwarven super-soldier experiment, kobolds are the pissed-off mutated descendants of dragons who want to reclaim their birthright, and I've got a bunch of other races beside. All races that I feel make an interesting addition to the setting.

>>50182262
With the setting notes you've given here, obviously, more "grimdark" or "inherently magical" races are uncommon if they exist at all; wood elves might be a thing, but high elves might not be.

Halflings are a natural "fit" for more optimistic pastoral settings, but you can always play around with the stereotype.

If the tech level is as high as you say, then there's probably at least one "techy" race to drive it. Rock Gnomes might work, if you don't feel they're too magical, and dwarves are often placed in that sort of role, but kobolds have the smarts to fit the role, every reason to fill that role (brainy but weak, small, puny, vulnerable), and it makes for quite a unique use for a race normally relegated to black comedy cannon fodder.
>>
>>50182171
Then use none.
The worst thing any setting can have is multitude of races shoveled in for "variety". It's not variety. It's fake content, pretending the world is more complex, while doing exact opposite.

They're on an island way out on the sea and live in a massive city. There's a cold civil war going on between robots and human-like robots that think they're humans.

People, please. When I play a fantasy game, I want to be something I'm NOT. I'm NOT brave, I'm NOT strong, I'm NOT all that bright, and I'm NOT much to look at. I can't breath underwater, I can't fly (well, only for a bit, and just in the one direction) I only live about 80 years at best (if I eat kale and live a boring lifestyle). I'm already human, and it's kind of boring.

That said, if you're going for other races, make them different. REALLY different. Made from rock, two-headed, lizard people (and none of that standard fantasy lizard-folk shit, I mean actual reptiles), an octopus. Just not humans with pointy ears or, in sci-fi, rubber foreheads.
>>
>>50182411
>Why doesn't everyone want to play a world that's generic fantasy but even more bland
The main advantage of races is that it can allow for greater diversity within the party, which 40k does really well. An Ogryn, a regular human, and a halfling all play completely differently. With all humans the only difference is how you rolled.
>>
>>50182171
I've considered running an RPG in a setting where all the races are just different species or subspecies within the homo genus who evolved differently for reasons.

>Heavily carnivorous humans
>Naturally gravitated towards animal domestication as it was required to have any sort of permanent settlements
>Since they developed domestication earlier they started breeding animals earlier and to a greater extent
>To them breeding people was just a natural extension of that
>Medieval eugenics society
>Having a good pedigree is extremely important and well bred people will often include names of famous ancestors in their titles or when being formally introduced
>Poorly bred people are often sent into battle with shitty weapons to die, if they live they might become good potential breeding stock
>Various clans and houses have congenial conditions from inbreeding ranging from ingrown toenails to scoliosis to hemophilia

It isn't a science, it is literally just carrying over breeding animals to breeding people and domesticated animals are often inbred as fuck, as were the historical aristocracy. Inbreeding doesn't just mean sister fucking to make retarded babies it means fucking someone else with the same genetic traits as you bringing for the problems that you had in the next generation but exacerbated. Pretty much the Hapsburg chin isn't due to inbreeding persay, it is due to people with underbites breeding with other people with underbites ensuring their children would have underbites.

If you truly have a blank slate;

Populate it with whatever races your player's pick as PCs.
>>
Lazy GM's Guide to Races:

Step 1: Organize all available races into archetypes. These can be based on habitat, characteristics, or purpose within the setting. Some examples:
>Mountain Races: Dwarf, Minotaur, Goliath
>Magical Races: Elf, Githzerai, Gnome
>Savage Races: Orc, Gnoll, Lizardfolk
>Human Races: Human, Human, Human

Step 2: Wait for players to make characters.

Step 3: Create setting demographics based on how many races of each archetype you want and which races your players chose to play as. You can even mold the geography of the setting to suit the races that will be prevalent if you so wish. For example, if the players chose several different mountain races, then the game might take place in a more mountainous region.

I think what he means is that in a eugenic society phenotypes showing the malignant effects of inbreeding wouldn't be allowed to breed anymore. You're basically saying that the logical result of only letting those deemed fit by society breed would be people noticeably unfit being bred more.

The thing is that everyone has some flaws, clans, houses, or families would likely be willing to overlook flaws until they were so integrated into the family that breeding them out would take centuries. Even then the vast majority would probably just be minor issues that cause some problems like being flat footed, back problems, minor underbites, nearsightedness. If a guy is a 2 meter tall murder machine with a great sword you could probably overlook the fact that he tends to have back problems and is flat footed if it means getting to add his children to your family or clan or whatever.

At the end of the day it is the same thing that is wrong with dogs, sure they could actively try to breed out bloat or hip dysplasia but that is a lot easier said than done especially while trying to keep the traits that made breeds useful (size, intelligence, herding instincts, soft mouths, sense of smell, sausage bodies). Plus it would help keep them from being retarded mary sues since they get the advantage of being bred but the disadvantages of congenial conditions.

Wrong.
In a world with multiple races, the politics should absofuckinglutely have races as an integral part. Coming up with what the politics look like, then ramming a bunch of races in is beyond forced, and will make the setting feel like it's trying too hard.

I REALLY like this in a narrative game. Reskinned humans as races are really boring, not just in their culture and looks but their abilities. However, in D&D and the like, which is most popular TRPGs, it doesn't work mechanically to be cold blooded or have two heads or four arms or anything unless you then limit the down/upsides those can have. Still, they should at least appear very different, I agree with that.
>>
Add a race when you need it. When you want to see a dynamic that can only exist if some of the players are importantly, physiologically different.

Remember, not only is human culture extremely diverse, so is human physiology. You can afford to have unique human races of tremendously varying sizes, intelligences, and musculatures.

I busted out elves when I wanted to explore a race of people whose minds can be read by looking into their eyes. This is not possible to ascribe to humans, I needed some other sapient creature with this magical property to exist. And so it does. And now I can explore their cultures and physiologies unimpeded.
>>
>>50192125
This guy is right. Don't include things unless they play a role in your setting. An amphibious race adds an entire world to explore and brings interesting dynamics when it comes to interactions with other races. A mechanical or otherwise unborn race presents plot opportunity and many interesting characters that can't be achieved otherwise. Same goes for very large and very small races, beast races, and so on. But you don't need "humans with pointy ears" and "squat humans", and overloading your setting with too much would detract.
>>
>>50192125
For instance, you could imagine how different the relationship between a sentient crow and a sentient toad would be from any human relationship. These are net things to explore. Crows and toads have different diets, intrinsically different values. One is probably much smarter than the other, and can easily eat it too. But imagine these fellows arguing over a property line, or playing Go over coffee together.

You goto decide why races are interesting, and interrogate that. That's what stories are about. If you're telling stories about men, there's no reason for them to randomly sometimes have pointy ears.
>>
>>50192172
That's how I feel about 40k. There's a lot I like, and then so so much more. It's not a seamless, singular entity like, say, Arrakis. It's greasy and overwrought.

I have a ton of races in my setting, but they are divided by the continents and only three appear in the campaign I've been running. All of them play an important role, and I can still introduce other races as foreigners if someone wants to play one.

I unironically hope it does.

Okay OP, most of this threads got my bile out of the way already so I want to ask you a question.

Why do you want races? What's your reasoning for including multiple nonhuman races? What purpose do they serve to have them in the setting do you created?
>>
You know you can have the 'multi race dynamics' without literally Making a world where people are completely different species.

Look at legend of the five rings or vampire masquerade. The game is got a clear narrow focus of role-playing a samurai in feudal not Japan or vampires in the modern day. But there is still different clans and blood lines with in that, each with their own customs, politics, and strength and weaknesses.

I like the overall style, but the scale on a lot of those races feels really off, Badgers for example should be at least twice as large, and Wildcats and Foxes are also too small
>>
Just humans, but make very colorful cultures.

if you haven't already you should check out All Tomorrows, it's exactly what you're looking for(Man After Man by Dougal Dixon and Last and First Men by Olaf Stapledon are also somethings to look into)

>Why do you want races?

Fantasy races are excellent for many reasons. For one, they act as short hands for cultures without having to explain how these humans are greatly different from these humans.

Secondly, if you want to give people special abilities or powers, humans only cause a lot of problems with it. There is also a lot less diversity in basic attributes with humans then with other races. The strongest human vs the weakest human is a much smaller gap then a human and a strong minotaur for example.

Third, it adds a new element to gameplay and charecter creation- which is always nice to have.

Not sure why you can't simply have people from different cultures, you know like in real life, but whatever.

Yeah because that +2 in strength you get for being a half ork really is a big difference. Not.

>Third, it adds a new element to gameplay and charecter creation- which is always nice to have.

If the races just extra star points, just give the player extra stat points.

Fantasy races work when they are an alien or mysterious "other."
They also work if major physical differences are required, such as wings, a tail, or a totally different average in height.

These things are less effective or cannot be done with humans.
>>
>>50195301
Fantasy races works when they are developed and not just one note decorum.
Anything else, including "alieness", is not necessary. There is absolutely nothing wrong with human-like races.
>But you can do it with other humans!
Maybe. So? What does it have to do with anything?

Take the example from sci-fi and create races yourself. Make them humanoids but different enough so they can't be summarized as humans with different color/height/ears/animal-hybrid. Finally, give them interesting backstory and traits that will fit your setting and you're good to go.
