Go DL the 40k rule book from the 40k general. Skip to the setting lore and read. That will give you the basics straight up and then help show you where to look next by what you like.

Horus Heresy series is probably the best place to start. It goes through the most important events in the setting. Just keep in mind that they predate the fictional "present day" by 10,000 years.
Warning, the legit audiobooks are obscenely expensive.
