>tfw you free your mind from the shackles of muh historical accuracy autism and learn to appreciate the aesthetics of fantasy design

My God, is it liberating.

As long as this is a 'you do you' post and not a 'aesthetics a best'

Some people like accuracy the way you like aesthetics

Me? I'm not satisfied unless all my knights are mounted upon enormous but realistically rendered cocks

I prefer armor that looks protective while retaining a distinctly fantastical look for the character wearing it.

Stuff like EVERYTHING FROM THE DARK SOULS SERIES and the better suits in Witcher 3 are great in this regard.

I don't care much for historical accuracy, but I'm not also the kind of guy to approve of everything because "muh fantasy". My measuring stick is mostly this: would someone want or need to wear this?

This is why I dislike bikini chainmail but am much more lenient to equally scantily clad barbarians and mages.

Warhammer does a good job of finding a balance between form and function with a lot of feasible designs that are just fantastically ornate.

As long as it looks actually protective I don't particularly care. The only stuff that really bugs me is when self-proclaimed 'knights' in a piece of fiction walk around in a set of armor that barely even covers their vitals. Eastern stuff can be really bad about this; I've seen several pictures where combatants walk around with their midsections just completely bare but they still bother to wear shin and armguards for some reason.

'Knight' doesn't mean 'guy in plate armour' though.

It's a title that has nothing to do with what you wear. Most knights could just afford better equipment than most peasants.

This t b h.

I have a special fondness for armor that bleds historical and fantasy but isn't just using medieval plate armor but instead the sorts of armor that would benefit adventurers and their active, always-on-the-move lifestyle more. I've always been a fan of roman-esque fantasy armors because really. If it works for an entire legion of professional soldiers who march across the known world to enforce their empire's laws on natives, it'll work great for adventures who similarly travel across the world to beat up natives and take their shit.

While true, the concept is similar. Lighter armor, easily donned by a single soldier and capable of being worn for long marches. It's prime adventurer armor and it's a shame there's not more "adventurer" art using similar. It seems to tend towards cloth/leather (skimpy or otherwise) or full blown plate.

Aesthetic has it's place but so does realistic. If I want to see a scruffy warrior who makes 1 copper a week punching rats then I want realistically shitty chainmail on him. If I see Sir Paladromus Coriander IV of Elystria, knight commander of the Order of Angelus Knights, I want to see an overly elaborate white and gold armor shining so bright with pointy bits and lion/eagle motifs that my eyes start to hurt.

Doublet is virtually skintight and very, very thin but made out of tough stuff. It is in no way comparable to a motherfucking gambeson, which contrady to popular belief was NOT commonly worn under armor because of the whole "I don't want to die of heat stroke" issue. Maille and plate typically was worn without a gambeson on, because most of the time you didn't actually need it anyway with plate armor.

Plate armor is basically a second skin. It's actually the thin anime-esque armors that closely hug the body that get it more right than the giant bulky suits common in fantasy. The only exception should be the breastplate and plackart, which should be sloped and globe-shaped so it can collapse without also collapsing your chest.

>>50176574
What I love about Miura's armor-design is similar to what I like about *Souls stuff is that you can tell that despite the stylisation and unique looks of each suit of armor, Miura clearly did his research on how plate armor works and struck a nice balance between cool looking and grounded/practical design.

Which is another reason among many that I'm not fond of the 2016 series in that just about all the non-named knights all use the same model. At least in Egg of the King they went out their way to give variation for the mooks.

This is pretty much the reason I think boob plate would be feasible in a fantasy setting with women in the military. Not ubiquitously but some.

I'm actually pretty sold on this design. I mean, yes, that lance is ridiculous but it could easily hold a shape charge and therefore be mostly hollow.

That, and there seems to be a bayonetted gattling gun chained to the back.

But anyway, a giant beastie implies massive blunt force impacts and low velocity penetrations and in that plate armor excells.

Well fitted plate armor fit like a second skin. Mass produced munitions plate was pretty clumsy but not extremely heavy. 30 lbs give or take.

You get what you pay for, essentially.

What I hate is when realistic and fantasy armour clash.

Every foot soldier as far as the eye can see has realistic armour but then the protagonists sidekick is some bitch with her midriff showing and has a boobplate

I used to be a pleb that knew nothing about armor, either it was full plate or civilian clothes/robes.

But as I learned more about history I actually started to like armor more, especially all these types of medium and light armors. Like gambesons, brigandine, and so on.

Not really, you need lots of strength or a little extra speed behind it, so it generally isn't super viable. Also, it takes time to turn the point upside down which makes the move that much worse.

There's about as many kinds of armors as there are weapons to defeat them. Because everything was handmade, you'd see variation even in the same class of armor.
>>50176462
You could lessen the strike and if the tip is in the ground you could stop it cold but that kind of guard was intended for strikes to the leg. Swung at torso level, that blow has enough weight to break through the block. That and she(?) is blocking a two handed blow with a single hand an head on at that.
>>
>>50176462
It's a common fencing technique, it works because moving into that position knocks central thrusts off to the side, holding that position to block would be stupid though.

It's not a block anons, it's a parry for thrusts to the lower body.

It moves the thrust away from your core either averting the blow entirely or making it easier to dodge.

Blocking with a rapier would generally be a bad idea anyway especially against a blunt two handed strike. That's just begging for a broken sword.

Hidetaka Miyzakai, director of Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne absolutely loves Berserk. Everythng from the Dark Sign to Artorias is inspired by that particular brand of medieval grittiness. Sure, the actual Brand more or less is in Bloodborne, the Hunter and Heir runes very very heavily resemble Berserk's Brand of Sacrifice. Also Ludwig looking like Rapehorse.

I know, but if you're going to bother arming yourself, you might as well protect your gut. Eastern fighters (in media) have a long history of armoring everything but their midsection and head and it just looks kind of weird to me. Like, they don't even wear a proper vest or anything to dissuade bladed weapons, it's just bare of protection.

Take pic related. Poorly protected shoulders, no protection on her midsection, bare upper legs, tightly fitted chestplate with no crumple room. It's a joke of an armor concept that she can only get away with because she's fucking Lightning and an OP piece of shit, but it kind of begs the question why she bothers wearing it at all.

I know that, but the fact that Lightning just kind of half-asses her armor in a setting where plenty of characters either go balls to the wall, like pic related, or just don't fucking bother, like Cloud and his friends, makes her stand out and look kind of stupid.

Final Fantasy sucks at design.

Well, I'll revise that. Later Final Fantasy sucks at design. You get into Final Fantasy Tactics, and the designs are very good. There's two different worlds, here.

In FF14, they have high graphics, but have really overdesigned them, and put a lot more emphasis on hairstyle and... Well, just generic "style" than anything. Looking at the picture on the left, I want you to tell me what their role might be in the party, and what their abilities might be.

Okay, let's try FFT on the right. Look at these characters. Now, could you, at a glance, tell me what role they might play in the party, and what kind of abilities they might have.

While the FF14 character look like a boyband, there's little in the way of visual queues to tell you about them or what role they might play. In FFT, their whole design is centered around just that, even establishing overarching themes giving the species. The visual queues can tell you, at a glance, where you might want them to be on the field of battle, and how they might be used in the game.

I suppose it's the difference between designing a character to be acted and designing a sprite that's meant to offload as much information to you as possible, but overall, when we don't have words to tell us about the character and only have the design to work off of, a design that speaks to a universal or at least genre-common (like fantasy adventure) language gives us key clues into what kind of character might be depicted in these designs, and how they might act or be acted on.

Anyway, fuck Square Enix. Their designs are terrible.

That is a federshwert not a rapier.

That said, you're right, it's not a block, you never just block with a sword. In this picture I'd say she was going in from right plow and her plans changed. She had to bring the tip down and she intends to use that momentum to carry the blade around the left side of her back for a downward strike from her right where he is open.

Just about the only obnoxious fantasy thing going on here is that she's using one hand as it severely reduces her leverage if he decides to bind her (but I wouldn't know how you'd accomplish that with a staff)

I'm not big on staff fighting but I do believe the posture he's taking is for using his staff at range, which he's failing to do. If I encountered this, I'd slide the sword up the staff and cut his fingers off.

Snow was the true protagonist all along, and we never saw it.
Sazh an incredibly close second, because he was legit one of the only three likable characters in that whole game.

(FF13 could have been great, but the second half was a rushed job, Lightning was absolute trash, Hope was a lost cause, and the game should have ended at the first.

Machine Eidolons was a neat idea though, and I favored the Shiva Cycles the most.)
>>

FF15 has just about no armor, because it's a game with beings that can summon lightning down on you and others can shoot what would likely be armor piercing bullets.

Don't forget that literal gods are in these games, with very physical existences, and a casing of metal will not save you from a massive one punching down on you.

Have you even SEEN the size of that titan in the preview? Please tell me how armor saves you in this case.

The name of the game is visual effects, combat system, and not getting hit.

If you want to wear armor in a game like this, try Dark/Demon Souls.

Let's see... Guy in the middle is team leader on account of being in the middle and in the front, skills are alternatively being an emo and being determined. Probably uses a sword because party leader and protagonists have to have swords because reasons.
Second guy from left punches things. HUEG ARMS and an open shirt says so.
Blondie to the left... hits things maybe? Or possibly healer because noone else looks like a healer?
Guy with glasses, 2nd from the right, smart guy because only smart people have glasses, scientifically known fact that. Uses either gadgets or magic depending on setting.
Guy to the right looks angry and mean, that means he will betray the party at some point.

A think its a good idea to always to a bit of study on historical armour even if you are designing high fantasy stuff.

Its just good practice.
>>
>>50188935
Aye, makes it easier once you understand how each piece works and where should be.
>>
>>50187388

When you have so little to work with, you have to make every pixel count. Each pixel is in service to making each sprite recognizable in an instant. The boy band ones? The overdesigned, under-clothed characters? Render them down to pixels and try to tell them apart, or tell me what they do at a glance?

The art is in service to the Pixelated designs, featuring similar color palettes, obvious features, and consistent themes.

Which is actually a paradox considering the first Final Fantasy games. The concept artwork for the older Final Fantasy games reads detail and design into those simple sprites and pixels, and fleshes them out. It's what you're supposed to imagine when you're moving these pixels around. It's even illustrated in a strange, dreamlike way, with shapes blending into each other and details fading in and out of the form, it's like a brushstroke. Now they try to read all this detail into the characters proper, and it becomes kind of a mess.

that statement's with regards to your image, right?

That seems like the same principle onion knights armour works off. By being so rounded it's impossible to get a direct hit and attacks are more likely to graze. To be perfectly honest I'm not sure boob-plate has the curve required to produce that effect, unless it's obscenely large boob-plate.

>shackles of muh historical accuracy autism
In a world where several million people think that over-sized pauldrons and weapons with spikes coming out of fucking everything is cool design, historically accurate equipment is often a breath of air.

judging from the posts in this thread that's not really the trend

if by "liberating" you really mean "comedy gold"

After all, I'd be personally awestruck in fear at how I might ever defeat OP's robed knight who's wearing a jousting helm with absolutely no peripheral vision, only forward vision when he tips his entire body forward, (since the neck is almost fixed in position,) and carrying a sword on his back that cant be drawn from there.
and has spurs on that will catch on his robes and trip him if he tries to fight on foot, since he's using a sword utterly useless on horseback.

Fantasy stuff is fine.
Fantasy stuff that doesnt work because it was designed by artists who've never learnt to use armour or weapons are comically bad. Just like fantasy cars drawn by people who cant drive are comically bad. or fantasy spaceships in a hard-sci-fi setting are comically wrong.

There are lots of things that you can do to designs. the problem is most of the artists dont do their research to know what they can and cant do without breaking the golden rule: "does it still work"
