Alright, I just finished watching a bunch of classic western films and I'm thinking of running something like that.
I'm thinking of reading Deadlands but before I start I want to know what I'm getting myself into...
Is this a good idea? Are there better options out there? Is the system any good? Something in particular I should know?
>>
Deadlands is good

Savage Worlds also has a version if you want more rules-lite.

gurps is good for gun porn and gritty realistic struggle

Do you want to run a weird western?

If the answer is yes; run Deadlands.

If you want to run a tradional western check out something else, like...

>Aces & Eights
>Dust Devils
>GURPS: Western
>>

I'm still taking notes (tone, essential clichés, historical points) so I'm waiting to hear what my players would prefer.
In some way the idea of starting what seems like a traditional western and doing a 180° is somehow tempting.
Am I a monster?

No dawg, Ive done that in slice of life games as well as Cyberpunk ones. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

just ensure the system you have uses progression rules that allow adapting once the veil is lifted. Like GURPS

Do it.

It's worked well in a medieval middle eastern game that was straight historical then turned crazy once the PCS dug up the Necrnomicon.

Just make sure to foreshadow the upcoming supernatural horrors with little hints here and there.

Unexplained phenomena that isn't obviously caused by supernatural powers.

Right now I'm taking notes for both types of campaign.
The only GURP I've ever run was Discworld so I'm a bit unsure, it will be an experience.

If you want to run Deadlands, yeah, but Deadlands is really just Dungeons and Dragons in the old west. It isn't a western game, isn't really meant to be one and doesn't really do it well. It is to the western genre what Shadowrun is to cyberpunk, it vaguely captures the vibe and drowns it in a lot of totally out of context stuff.

If you want that, it's fine, but if you want a traditional western game, I'd use something else.

Aces & Eights in particular is great, especially the combat, but it isn't the simplest system to pick up.

There is also Through The Breach which is pretty neat. While Deadlands and Savage Worlds use playing cards, TTB is entirely diceless and each player has their own deck. Very nice mechanics and good flavor.

EVERYTHING classic Deadlands, plus the mad max version Hell on Earth:

I'm running this exact games in pathfinder. It started as a joke setting "Canada 1850", but has become a semi supernatural game about fighting old ones, cultists, wendigo-like spirits, and the followers of a ghost Chinese Emperor. As much as it stresses me out dm wise, it is pretty neato

Deadlands is only good if you are running weird west.
If you want rather get spaghetti western instead, Savage Worlds or GURPS (depending how "realistic" you want to be)
