If I want to run a Final Fantasy sort of game, where do I start?
Are there any homebrews or systems that replicate any of the games well? I know that they vary in mechanics quite a bit over the series, but the job systems and the way 7 handled materia stand out to me.

well, average for a pnprpg...
I kinda get confused when people ask this because Final Fantasy game could mean quite different things depending on the FF in question. At least OP specified.

There this one, its pretty good.

7 or 14 I'd say. 7 lacks a class system but the Materia system is a good way of doing magic I think. I suppose you may need other ways of defining the characters though if they're all using the same sort of magic.

It's a d20 heartbreaker, what did you expect?

I don't even know what a heartbreaker is.

A d20 heartbreaker is a homebrew (often of dubious quality) based on the d20 OGL ruleset.
Brewing such games was such commonplace at a time that it is essentially its own genre, called d20 heartbreaker or fantasy heartbreaker. It is named so because the care and attention put in very rarely pays off, if at all, hence breaking the creator's heart.

I don't know how anybody could write a 900 page book and expect anyone to read it. Must be a real life autist.
