I think we should put them back in their place as monstrous predators, rather than super-powered analogues for groups who consider themselves to be oppressed.

Among other things, that means giving them their weaknesses back. When you have a vampire that can take daytime beach-walks while chugging holy water and wearing a cross, it starts looking more like a superhero than a monster.

We should additionally have vampires that actually need to kill people and drink blood, and that look more monstrous than cute or handsome. Having them maintain healthy and stable relations with normal humans is detrimental to their monstrosity. The "reformed" vampire especially should lose its prevalence.

I think they can still appear cute or handsome, as long as they're still monstrous.
The thing that sets a vampire apart from a lot of other monsters, is that they're capable of passing off as humans, at least in a situation where not exposed to their weakness, and that they often wear a mask of nobility. A vampire may appear charming and seductive, and often has supernatural ability to sway people to their will, but ultimately that should only be a facade. In their heart, they're bloodthirsty monsters that's seek only to lure you into a position where they can feed on your blood.

If you remove the ability to pass as a human, then a vampire isn't really very different from any number of other undead that prey on people. I think keeping it around is pretty integral to what makes vampire a vampire.

Have you ever read about the New England Vampire Panic of the 1800s? People were dying of consumption (tuberculosis). They'd spend years slowly wasting away until at last they were a withered husk coughing up blood until they finally gave up. It was like the life was being sucked out of them. Entire families were being wiped out and there was nothing anyone could do. They didn't know what caused it (most likely bacteria from their cows) and even if they did there wasn't a treatment until around the mid 1900s. People were scared and just wanted an answer, a way to fight back, so they blamed vampires. Some places made parties of digging up the graves and mutilating the corpses. Sometimes they'd remove what was left of the heart and burn it, feeding it to the supposed vampire victims as a cure.

The idea I have about vampires, although it's not strictly /tg/ related is that with their eterna lives and super powers they've managed to accumulate money and power and form powerful groups to try and control the world.

Just go crazy with the concept. A vampire is any being that lives off of feeding on something else's life essence. There are so many different ways vampires can be interpreted (just look at mythology/folklore.) It's just that the focus should always be on the idea that the vampire has to feed on some form of life essence, making them often looked at evil to those that aren't vampires. I personally prefer them as a largely unseen demonic plague. When they walk the Earth in the guise of man or woman there is too much risk of humanizing them, making them sympathetic.

I prefer a scourge that preys indiscriminately and drags out the misery of the victims for years. The people struggle to find the source. Digging up corpses and subjecting them to crude tests. But is it even a corpse? Could one of the victims be the source? Is someone seen to grow stronger after another victim dies? Do you put them to the torch? Do you just dig up the bodies, stake them, cut off the head and place it between rotted legs, or turn it upside down to confuse it if it tries to escape it's coffin?

I prefer the paranoia and fear, neighbor turning on neighbor. The monster, as bad as it is, proves that worse still are normal people when they are desperate and afraid.

The thing you have to remember about Vampires is that they aren't human. They may have been, once, but not anymore. They simply DO NOT THINK like we do. They are effectively a race of high-functioning sociopaths: mimicking the emotions of humans in order to fit in, even among their own kind. Well, they're already cool. So, I'm assuming you mean 'scary' and make people take them seriously. Well, it's fairly hard to do in most /tg/ campaigns, since the protaganists are superhuman, and they're not the 'victims', as much as they're the vampire hunters.

Anyway, how to do it...first, make the Vampires superhuman themselves. Not even strong enough to take them out 1v1, but strong enough, to take them out in a surprise attack. Then, make them appear 'normal'. Basically, if your vampire is cackling, and going "MUHAHAHA, Count Dickula sucks again!" you're doing it wrong.

So, now you have something that can be anywhere, and is a huge threat. The last touch, is make sure the vampiric disease is a thing. That nice guy, who helped the party get health potions? Well, next time they turn their back, one of them is getting a bite to the neck, which even if it dosen't kill them, will cause huge problems.

I just want to make a huge fucking list of Vampire powers, weaknesses and passive traits from all sorts of stories and cultures, and then have players create vampires by rolling randomly.
Probably weigh the powers, so that you either get a few strong powers or a lot of weaker ones.

So that you might end up with a vampire that sparkles (Twilight), but his powers are transforming into a giant firefly (Ewe mythology) and sucking the fetuses out of pregant women (manananggal myth), and as a weakness he can't cross running water, hates garlic, and has to eat nail clippings (Betsileo mythology).

Idk, I think that when you look anywhere that isn't a show aimed at teenage fat women, vampires are still cool. Problem is, almost everything is aimed at that demographic nowadays.

Now if you want to make vampires scary, that's pretty much a herculean effort. Horror comes mainly from the unknown, and fucking anyone knows how vampires work. Therefore, not scary.

By making them predators instead of people. A lot of fanfiction and media focus on he aspect of what it means to be a vampire rather than what if means to live near them. There needs to be consequence to their actions and they need to make people vulnerable because of it. They can be magnificent badasses but once they start becoming just moody humans with fangs they lose their tone.

Id also suggest not turning them into little girls to appease anime fans, but with the proper characterization it can be creepy. Though usuallly its just done to be cute.

As I understand it the problem with "the edge" is that it IS seen as "tryhard." When seen as over-the-top or packed with too many horror cliches, or just seen as being cheap, dark for the sake of darkness.

Rather the way, I think, some people really loathe emo Dracula when he's presented as some dark, tortured soul who whines about being the last of his kind because Van Helsing keeps staking all his wives.

Personally I think it is all a bit suspect because it is criticism that itself invokes thoughts of "stop liking what I don't like." It's purely a judgement of the reader/viewer. I have nothing wrong with them being seductive or commanding, but then I prefer the classic Universal Monsters. I do love Bela Lugosi's Drac (and Christopher Lee for Hammer). I think it's because among classic monsters he's typically the most intelligent. Wolfman is as a human but a raging beast when he transforms (and nicely fits the tortured being roll better than Dracula anyway). Frankenstein's Monster? Haha, typically not the movie. And The Mummy beyond Boris Karloff's Adreth Bay is typically little better than Frankenstein wrapped in bandages (at least the movies with Imhotep allowed him to be intelligent, but also upped his power factor to ridiculous degrees). Less a classic mummy and practically a full blown lich.

Of course these are just my opinions. Everyone clearly has the version they prefer. I certainly prefer the old movie versions. Cool, collected, powerful hypnotist, but if you push him he drops the human facade and shows how much of a monster he can be.

Obviously not so heavy on the body horror elements, but the ability to hide among a population and appear perfectly normal until ready to feed, spread, or to defend itself. Something that while it can perfectly mimic the original people, has everything they are, it ultimately uses them as a means to an end. No single part matters so long as the infection itself still survives, even if it has to go dormant again and wait for more unwary souls to unleash it again.

I suppose The Strain is rather like that, though I don't know too much about The Strain. The seem more like zombies but I guess there are more intelligent versions? I know there is a Master mentioned. I don't know, they seem to REALLY have problems hiding and passing as normal people so it loses a lot of the paranoia fueled horror.

Can't see it working. The whole little kid monster deal works as a means of setting up a contradiction in the mind of the audience. Especially when it appears as a normal kid at first but THEN goes monster-mode. Whether it's the idea of innocence or representing an object to protect, the sudden revelation of a kid being a threat, a monster, can be jarring. It's why zombie kids are used so often. Especially when they're often considered off-limits (the controversy over the trailer for Dead Island which forced them to remove all kids from the game).

And yet when you overdue it it loses any shock value. Plus a kid being a badass is something very likely to lead to extreme powerlevel/powercreep issues that go way too over the top and end up ruining the whole thing.

Like, take a campaign, have the players hear not of the new empress' appearance, but of the horrors she does. Slaughtering protesters, mercilessly executing any dissenting nobles, general villainous stuff. Then, when the party finally meets her, they see something like pic related.

Alternatively, you could have her be a clever git about it, have her purposely get a reputation of kidnapping nobles, then when the party gets there, since they don't know what she actually looks like, she pretends to be an innocent bystander. She'd have to hide the wings, though.
Not that that would solve the murderhobo/evil parties, but it might give her an advantage.

By not focusing on making them cool, but making them interesting instead. The thing that makes shitty vampires shitty is that they lack any sort of interesting aspect.

I dislike the ravenous ugly monster interpretation as much as daywalker mary-sues and pedophile anime wankery because it's STILL. NOT. INTERESTING. In my opinion, an interesting vampire will raise questions such as the nature of man and monster, or what exactly it means to be good or evil.
