Last couple threads have been cool, so lets make this a thing.

>alien races
> space tech
>ship interior/exteriors
>crewman designs
>scifi weapons
>planets and megastructures

These things and more. Drop whatever you've got.

This is just a general thread for any questions and ideas you've got for anything generically space.

Getting the ball rolling: how do you organize a space force? Do you use Naval terms and ranks, Air Force terms and ranks, or a mishmash of the two?
>>
Naval terms seem to be the best option. Most ships already use the same terms since they are easy enough to transfer into space.

What Tabletop games would you recommend for a space campaign, something along the lines of Outlaw Star.

I'm pretty sure that the best system for Outlaw Star was unironically agreed to be Dungeons:The Dragoning 7th edition.

I've tried to distance my stuff from naval terms, but that's personal preference. Like using the term voidvessel instead of spaceship and pod for a smaller ship.
For personnel, I've got a mishmash of anglicized Latin and French ranks that we don't use in English. I've ended up kind of having an ever morphing list of them, as if I get tired of using one, then I shift to another. Like when I stopped liking Kenturn, from Centurion, I moved to Shefdepremir, from Chef de Premiere Classe. I really need to flesh out some of the higher ranks, though.

The presence of a space force large enough it would require dedicated ranks would likely indicate such a technological leap any form of navy has become fully obsolete and thus appropriating their ranks will cause the least amount of confusion.

However an improvised early space-exploration armed force would likely use airforce terminology.

Dunno. What do you call someone who commands a small group of spaceships? Like, one big ship and its various support and escort ships? An admiral? A fleet captain? A General? A Space Marshall?

Alien race perceives all media with a single, extremely advanced visual cortex. Smell, taste, feeling and sound are all incorporated into their singular visual rendering of reality. In addition to this, their eyes can pick up almost the entire breadth of the electromagnetic spectrum and make good sense of it, their ears pick up a massive spectrum of frequencies, etc. Every one of their senses is extremely acute.

But they find extremes more unpleasant. The range of amplitudes they find palpable is very small, so all their sensory organs have very advanced "irises" that take a long time to adjust. If they walk from a candlelit room to a room with a fire roaring, it might be 20 full minutes before they're comfortable looking about.

So they where helmets that act as a secondary iris, compressing all information so that they can use it while they're sensory organs adjust. These are their greatest weakness. If you destroy their helmet, you've got a great window to kill them in in a violent situation.

I have trouble imagining an environment where that combination of traits would have been successful. It almost sounds like they were engineered to be some kind of spotter/navigator race rather than evolving on their own.

I am not sure that's true. We still maintain a navy even though we have an airforce, because most of our planet is water. And Earth is still going to have all this water when we have a space force too.

The Navy may only be relevant to local affairs, but I don't think it will just vanish entirely.
