Reposing in new thread.

On a budget and stuck between Phyrexian Bae and Saskia as my second deck(my frist is Breya).
I already have a lot of the tools for Atraxia in my Anafenza deck so I feel it's kind of a waste but I love the art and abilities she brings to the table(though her Partners make me sick). Is it worth getting a deck I already practically have or should I go with the dogpile deck instead to try something new?

Also, why is Breya's mana base dogshit? I know it's an artifact deck but for fucking cereal, not one filter or check? That's some bullshit.

Even in testing with shocks and such I've been having a little trouble on the manabase with my Breya deck, on the one hand I want to run a low land count like 34-30 cuz it's filled with mana rocks, but even with every signet and talisman colors can be a bit wonky sometimes cuz no green for that sweet fixing

Comin over from previous thread, looking for Atraxa inspiration. I saw some other posters talking about Consulate Surveillance which gave me the thought of taking an Energy-counter route. However, looking over the energy cards available, it doesn't look like the optimal route. Aetherworks Marvel and the Modules could have potential, but outside of Standard/Draft, the mechanic seems less efficient than other potential builds.

I had a great time playing with Queen Marchesa (long may she reign) tonight. Some flicker to give myself Monarch when I needed it, enough mana fixing, and I pretty much kept enough answers and threats in my hand to keep people from attacking me and at each other's throats until I could easily take them out. Still a couple of cards I'd like to put in (like Ghostly Prison and Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs) but other than that Queen Marchesa (long may she reign) has been pretty fun.

Ive never understood these hairbrained attempts at fixing a meta. The shifting of powerlevel of a meta is a natural, fluxuating cycle. Fucking with the natural processes does more harm than good. Don't mess with it!

It's like the circle of life in a way.

Decks start out pretty weak and play like battlecruisers, very unfocused or too gimmicky/durdly. This is the TIMMY phase. After the TIMMY phase, a healthy meta begins to experiment with alternate win cons and combos. The JOHNNY phase begins. This is generally the best phase to be in, as deck prices are do-able, and the meta is pretty accepting of all skill levels. Next, an event only known as the ARMS RACE begins, where the meta warps into the SPIKE phase. This is the most dangerous phase, as players can get needlessly salty, and spend extreme amounts on decks. These metas are very inclusive, and actually are a big point in the meta's life. There are two paths that can be taken from here. Either the meta reverts back into TIMMY phase due to the players agreeing to make decks based around jankier commanders/lower power builds, or the meta DIES. The death of a meta doesn't mean all players involved quit magic, just that group stops playing together as an organized meta from this point on.

Cascade trigger and Storm triggers go on the stack. Cast spell will be exiled by Storm but Cascade will be fine. Spell cast off of Storm doesn't get Cascade because it wasn't cast from hand.

What if I Storm into a new Cascade? Cascade doesn't care if it comes from the hand. Apparently doesn't even care if you Cascade again.

Absolutely terrifying to play against. Probably his greatest asset is that he says "Target Creature". Shu Yun can double strike for insane damage with a single prowress trigger, your Gisela can wipe someone off the face of the earth because you countered the defender's removal spell, or any creature on the field can get double strike.

You just don't see him nearly as often as every other jeskai commander because Narset exists.

Obviously. If you cascade into a spell that has cascade itself, it will trigger again, but doesn't do anything with Storm. If you want things to cascade reliably, you cast from hand, since Yidris only applies for those spells.

this is just my opinion, but cards like spine of ish and scour from existence are trash. don't bother with 1-for-1 artifact/enchantment removal in monoblack. instead, put in your staple tutors and then some mass removal. nevi disk, all is dust, the new boompile, etc. then clear the board whenever the non-creature bullshit gets too obnoxious. and since you're monoblack and they're not, they'll probably gas out and you probably won't.

build-around commanders like :

edric, spymaster of trest is a mega-spike, mega-budget option since all you need is tiny flying evasion dudes that no other deck wants and some counterspells and then some cheap goodstuff to win with (pathbreaker ipex, overwhelming stampede, triumph of the hordes)

a fun option would be zada, hedron grinder, who similar to edric only requires goofy power buffs, token generation and targeted cantrips. you use those dumb cards to one-shot the table. cheap as fuck and fun too

you can also build cheaper colors, like monoblack, which is also pretty cheap and strong. it might not be the best idea for a first deck because your answers to artifacts and enchantments range from "welp" to "destroy everything on the board, including my own shit"

rakdos and monored are also pretty cheap, but not the most top-tierest of colors

the most expensive colors are probably UGx, and they're the best colors too, who woulda thunk it. manafixing is expensive in general, so i'd stay away from tri-color decks (they're boring anyway)

Brago is a combo engine so it's a little different. I don't know if rubina would be a straight upgrade, but at least you would have access to different tech. Most brago lists are relatively samey and I find he's pretty powerful and consistent of built correctly. Now, the critical weakness is how easy he is to blow up, so if that's frustrating I suggest just building whatever you like.

Since Brago relies on blink I though of going from blink to steal and then blink to get etbs for me/steal permanently. Also access to green helps to ramp which has been though on just UW on budget. My wincons were Elocutors (I had some protection and tap down stuff) and Brago voltronized. I'll whip up a list tonight when I get home and post here to see what I could change.

If you're hellbent on stealing, I would pick Merieke instead, for blinking I would have Roon.
Keep in mind that redudnancy is good in decks, but if you just focus on stealing with Rubinia, you won't accomplish much. You're better off just using clones from opponent's creatures.
Roon is pretty close to Brago, so all is not lost with him.

What does /EDH/ think of WE WUZ GAYZ 'N SHEIT? I think they can work pretty well since they also draw you cards. Pretty nifty how the deck comes with all the nice pillowfort cards except for Dissipation Field.

My Rubinia deck uses a lot of temporary steal effects (Rubinia, Overtaker, Reins of Power) and then trades them to other players with pic related, or keep them forever with Cloudshift and Conjurer's Closet.

It's mainly a lifegain deck, and I decided to use "big tokens" as a subtheme (since my Ghave deck goes wide, I wanted this one to go tall), and I ended up adding a few "make a copy of things" artifacts to have fun tokens to populate. I think this is a really great model that I have seen occur a few times with different groups I've played in. The pivotal moment is when the arms race of the spike phase reaches an apex and the group has to have a sobering conversation that makes or breaks the group. The groups needs to talk about why the game isn't fun (or as much fun) anymore and sometimes its because one or two people are outspending the rest of the group or just because someone is a playing an inherently "unfun" or oppressive strategy. I've had groups where I realized I was the problem in one group because I tend to get a little too spikey and when my group confronted me about it I agreed to tone it down. I found the most fun in trying to push inherently sub-optimal strats so I'd end up with a net-medium power deck. I still pull out one of my good old decks from time to time but the table acknowledges that those games I'm the "villain" and it plays out like archenemy.

I'm returning to magic after a long time and I finally cobbled together my first commander deck. I'm still a bit rusty on the 2010 and later rule changes however. What's the best place to find patient people that'll go through the ropes with me and give me a taste of what multiplayer commander is like in practice? The nearest card shop is 50 miles away, they have occasional commander tourneys but they're mostly just 2 player tiny leaders.

And the whole place gives me the vibe that they wouldn't really have too much patience to deal with folks like me, though I'm sure I would adapt quickly. I mostly want to refine my decklist more, because I'm still not quite sure about what tempo I'll have to adjust to for a commander game, how many low cost vs high cost spells, how much heat will I be eating from removal spells and whatnot.

you should probably put in creature tutors and more utility fatties like hellkite tyrant and bane of progress. i believe i told you the last time that just plain old beaters are kinda weak with xenagos. the point of xenagos is that you can give haste to anything, so you can instantly get effects off stuff like balefire dragon, godo, and so on. focus on strong ETBs and strong "when this creature attacks/deals" combat damage. i don't want to micromanage your deck but just cut the most bland fatties and add some more utility stuff and maybe draw and it'll probably be better

The cards in the C16 pre-cons are just overall quite sub-par in power.
Add to that the fact that 4 color is literally the hardest kind of EDH deck to make and make well, and it's not a beginner product at all.
If you want to buy a Commander pre-con of any kind, I'd suggest C14 or C15 instead, since those are 1 or 2 color and tend to have a good amount of strong cards.

If you cast it with no mana doublers on the field it's not gonna kill anyone.

Four color is as consistent as you want it to be.

A two color deck trying to curve nantuko shade into shorecrasher elemental into phyrexian obliterator is going to have worse issues than a four-color deck that has generic mana symbols and a centralized color composition.

People bitch about how much mana bases cost when the reality is that if you're on a budget, it's more efficient to buy cards that don't have conflicting mana costs than it is to jam your deck with every goodstuff card you can find and then hope you have enough money to make the manabase save you. Lands are much more expensive than buying spells that better fit your colors.

There is no denying that fetshocks is the way to go, but this is not directed at those that have the lands. You could easily run a deck with many splashes. For example, if you build a monoish white deck, a plains and a city of brass or a vivid land gives you access to

If you construct a deck in this fashion, a four-color deck feels like a two-color deck. It's not a perfect solution, but do what you can until you can get your fetshocks.

This method doesn't help you cast your 4 color general on t4 very well, which is the point of a few of them.

If it wasn't for that, you could say to make the decks all artifacts, or monocolor save for the general and it would make it easy on you. But the generals are there, and it does put a strain on the deck. You can't say that these decks are as consistent as you want them to be on a budget when the generals themselves have no generic mana.

Tapped hate is absolutely a meme. I've seen way more players lose a game because they refused to play vivid lands than they did because a land came into play tapped.

When you play a tapped land, it may end up slowing down one of your turns. You know what slows you down more than having to cast a four drop on turns 4 and 5? Not being able to cast your 6 drop until you draw the color you need. Commander decks will go off-curve or waste mana at some point in the first five turns of the majority of games anyway, so as long as you run enough lands, you can save your tapped lands for the turns where they aren't a factor.

if i have a mana doubler, i can also often just use corpse dance and bounce kokusho through various zones and kill everyone, all the while triggering grave pact, smothering abomination, blood artist, etc. etc.

and if i use a exsanguinate with 22 mana, there's a big chance that someone will decide to counterspell it.

that won't really happen if i just play a ton of goodstuff cards right out of my hand, and since i'm playing monoblack i'm in no danger of ever gassing out

the thing exsanguinate has going for it is that it ignores board state, for good and bad. it doesn't make your board better, but it also doesn't care if your board is bad. i guess that's the good thing about it. even a 7 mana exsanguinate can save your ass in a pinch sometimes, that's 15 life.

I couldn't decide which of the new C16 decks to get so I decided to go with Karona and now i can run all the group hug and fun politics and chaos cards from all the new decks.
